Maybe I'mt just wierd, but I'd look at the guy and say "Hell yeah!"....doesn't matter whether it's true or not. Some folks need to mind their own business. Now, if they just offered a spot, that's a bit different, but some of this stuff is just ridiculous.
I just find it amazing how many people seem to understand everyone elses bodies, you know?? ;)

Ok, just a devil's advocate here.. recently I have seen some people in the gym doing crazy exercises that could really hurt themselves, and trainers walk by saying nothing. I would hope that the gym feels some responsibility to help people get the most out of their workout. Maybe give the new trainer the benefit of the doubt, it wasn't a personal attack but an offer of assistance. Maybe she didn't see all your other sets and was worried. I would just say, "thanks for noticing, I sacrificed on that last set to push through." Good luck!!

Kelli:
It all depends on what you want “personally” like and want. I have competed in a Figure Competition back in October and the experience was very rewarding.
I decided to do Figure because Bodybuilding would have been even more strenuous on my body…you must bring your bodyfat level as low as possible (lower then Figure) Generally, women are “naturally” small, however, some are blessed with a little bit more muscles and that’s why you have different weight classes.
You don’t have to be big but, if you were to see the women bodybuilders at the “Olympia”, you’d soon realize that ALL of them are on steroids…you CANNOT get to that level without the use of steroids, they are “juiced” up.
If you are thinking of doing a bodybuilding show, stick with “natural” shows :), the competitors are drug tested and it’s an even level playing field.

not only that..women's bodybuilding is kind of getting the heave ho from promoters..they know the audience would rather see figure/fitness..thats where the money is...so thats what most of the contests are

There's NO money to be made in Figure or Fitness until you become a PRO.....so, in the beginning, everything comes out of your pocket unless you are lucky enough and blessed with finding a sponser (gym owner, etc.) that will help you.
Figure/Fitness Competitions is very expensives, suits can easily cost over $1,000!!! Think I'm kidding...HA! I paid close to $400.00 for my suits (about $200.00 each) and I was BLOWN AWAY by the competitions, their suits were decked out compared to mine. I had very little stones, and I'm having to add more myself to save money and make them look nicer.

Oh can't forget the shoes, the tan, the make up, the hair, the nails, supplements, hiring a trainer, the food, the supplements, etc....OUF! OOOH and you can't forget to find a babysitter if need be, paying for overnight stay (if needed), travel time, gas, buying photos (there will be photographer taking pictures!).........oh and you got to pay for sign up fees, your NPC Card, etc.
The adventure is fun and exciting, but can be expensive too :-) But it's worth it, as long as you don't break the bank!

I agree with Jerry; it has its purpose but with the dumbbells you seem to have a greater range of motion and resistance seems more intense JMO.

OK heres the scoop- I called the EAS fitness expert and they said spinning is fine. No need to do it in addition to your 20 minutes though. So just schedule it in as one of your 3 cardio days and stick to your normal EFL diet plan adding a little more protein wont hurt but as long as your still keeping up with your LBWO and increasing weight and hitting 10's you should see no decline in your muscle growth in the legs by doing spinning once a week for 45-90 minutes at a time. Spinning "is" interval training-its good approved cardio for the BFL challenge.

Hey Charliegirl, There's lots of good information here. In terms of gender, you may be in the minority when you step into the free weight area. So what! You're there to get strong and get muscle. If you insist on bringing your monsters along, there's another unspoken rule: "Check your demons at the door." They'll wait for you. Maybe, maybe not! But be yourself. If there's a piece of equipment or technique you're unfamiliar with, it's ok to ask someone, but be confident. Not needy. You'll know you're in the game the day you walk out of the gym after a monster workout and realize in retrospect that those guys in the pit were just an afterthought. Handle it!
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (349 posts) at 04:53 AM

Just keep in mind that all those guys in the free weight room had to start somewhere too!
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (154 posts) at 06:13 AM
This was actually a problem for me the first time I tried getting in shape pre BFL days. I got a membership at Bally's. The first day I was wandering around like a lost little firstgrader. When I tried to get help from a trainer, he just looked through me and gave me a standard line about, "well free weights are best,"
I felt brushed off. I noticed later that he was busy helping a woman in much better shape than me. Now granted, there are a million and one reasons why this could have happened. None of them matter. All that mattered is I felt fat, unattractive, and unimportant.
I never set foot in the gym again.
Do not underestimate how important confidence in the gym is. When I did go for my first challenge, I worked out at home for a month before I got a membership at a different gym. Much better experience.
I reccomend getting a set of Powerblocks, or other adjustable weights for home. If you are really struggling at the gym, work out at home a bit to boost your confidence. There's no shame in doing that. :)

Girl...Ive been there/done that too. Try adding a new gym, in a new city (and STATE)and being 270lbs to the equation and see how self concious I was?
The best advice I can give is this:
ACT like you belong!!
That free weight area is as much YOURS as it is theirs, and after the 1st 2 sessions or so, youll be an old pro!
And just think...by working out in "that" area-you just might inspire other women to hit the free weights too and how cool is that? :)

Hi Charliegirl! Welcome To The Guest Book!!!! And Congratulations on starting your challenge!!!! Don't be worried what other people at the gym are thinking, and by all means do not let that hold you back!!! Just wait, in a few months time you'll will be showing them up!! And believe me, every one has to start somewhere, including all those guys at the gym. Just focus on your workout and don't worry about what anyone else is thinking!! You are doing this for You!!! When you walk into the gym, hold your head up high and act as if you belong there!!!! You have just as much right to be there as anyone else!!!! I wish you all the very best!!!!
Hugs,
Sylvia aka Cookie1135

I agree with most of the posts on here. Almost every guy in the gym is there to either change their appearance or they like working out for various reasons. I personally love lifting weights and have been somewhat of a gymrat since I was 16. I lift to blow of steam, it's my alone time. I glance around and if I see someone that need help I will offer it but usually I am very zoned in and listening to my MP3 player. My point is that most of the guys that you are intimidated by probably don't even realize that anyone is in the gym but themselves. Play your music kick buck and enjoy your workout!

Body for Life Forum Message by MomOfThree (3 posts) at 05:02 PM
Hey there Charliegirl! You have no reason to be embarrassed at the gym. First of all, the men in the weight room are concentrating on what they have to do, not on you and what you are doing! I have a home gym now, but a couple years ago, before I gave birth to babies #2 & #3, I worked out all the time in a gym where I was one of two women who belonged. This gym was geared toward body builders. I was embarrassed at first, like you, but after really paying attention to make sure nobody was "checking me out" I noticed that nobody cared about me, what I looked like or what I was doing! They were all there to work on themselves! Also, anyone in a gym knows that everyone has to start somewhere. Just concentrate on you and what you are doing ... before you know it you will look in the mirror and wonder why you were ever embarrassed in the first place ... I promise! By the way, you don't look horrible in the first place.

Just wondering what everyone else is using.
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (235 posts) at 01:50 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (155 posts) at 01:51 PM
I LOVE it!! I got it for Christmas from the in-laws. Now I did notice that they don't sell all the parts you can get for it at places like Walmart and Target. The one they got us came from the magic bullet website and it came with an actual blender and juicer attachment. I haven't used those yet and may not really need to. I LOVE the fact that you can just use the cup that you blend everything in to drink out of! So much easier to clean and I think the shakes come out creamier and frothier!! Can you tell I'm in love?? LOL
SHelly =)
Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (92 posts) at 01:51 PM
Can you mix a whole myoplex shake in it? I like the idea of more than one cup for mixing, especially when you have 2 people!!
What size is the cup? How many oz's??
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (28 posts) at 02:00 PM
I have one and REALLY like it, BUT...I find that it is too small for shakes. You cannot fill it very full and I have had it overflow once (BIG mess). I like to put more water and ice in my shakes so I started using my regular blender for my shakes. Also, the Magic Bullet is made to be used in short bursts....no more than 60 seconds at a time I think. I found that if I tried to make 2 shakes (one after the other, one for me and one for my daughter) that the thing would start smoking!
For me, the Magic Bullet is great for cooking but not the best for protein shake making. You can buy a bigger blender jar attachment for it, but it's another $40+ or so and if you add that to the $60 for the main pieces, you've got a $100+ blender. For that much money, you can get one that can puree rocks AND myoplex! JMO...

So says my bf. I have done 10k for the past two years each spring and I am NOT a runner. Never have been. I forced myself to do it to see if I could do it. And I did. And i hated it.
But Tim reminded me last night that somewhere along the line I said that this year I would train for the half marathon. Ugh. did i really say that?
Any good suggestions on a running program to increase distance and stamina? I don't think 20 min of HIIT is going to cut it this time. Meg

Body for Life Forum Message by Nut-Meg (482 posts) at 04:42 PM
ok:
1. Half marathon is the first week of june, so I have roughly5 and a half months to train.
2. not running at all yet, started a challenge yesterday and plan to start with 20 min HIIT.
3. For right now I just want to finish. Thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by Flexie (4 posts) at 04:55 PM
I too have signed myself up for a half marathon this year, actually 19th Feb to be exact and when I first started training 2.6kms seemed huge, but six weeks in I ran 15k on Monday evening in a time that I didn't think possible (1:50), not champion standards by any means but fast for me (my fastest over 10 km is 1:12). I know I can do it, even with a three week holiday to England where I will be training outside in the cold, not the summer weather we are having here at the moment. Here is a link to the programme I am using to train with. It has a bunch of stuff about heart rates for speed etc but as I am more concerned about finishing, I am just covering the distances. Hope this helps

http://www.500festival.com/marathon/TrainingInformation.asp
1 is for walk,
1 is walk-run
1 is run-walk
1 is run
But it is all meant to have you finish... I am doing the mini in mid May and am taking this as a prototype as it is based on times. First doing my HIIT then adding light running after that. The total time and extra cardio actually does 'almost' fit into Dr. Hussmans allowed tweaks to the BFL program.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (32 posts) at 06:01 PM
Okay, Meg. I did the same dumbass thing last year. And I started from ALMOST ground zero (I could run about 1.5-2 miles), and I trained for it in 12 weeks using the training on halhigdon.com. I had only ever run a couple of 5k races, and the last one was about a month and a half before I started training.
I absolutely am not a runner either--I just try to make myself plod along now and again, and I DID IT. I ran every single step of the way and it took me over 2 and a half hours to do it. But I DID IT!!!
PM me if you want and I'll give you all my "wealth" of knowledge.

I've just bought some CLA. I currently take four capsules of fish oil and two capsules of evening primrose oil each day.
Now is CLA doing the same/similar thing to fish oil / EPO??
With adding CLA should I stop or cut-down on the others??
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (235 posts) at 03:59 PM
CLA and fish or flaxseed oil are not the same and have different purposes. If you take CLA you should still take the fish or flax. Keep in mind though if you eat a serving of fish then cut the daily dose by one (not for the cla but the flax or fish). I take flax seed oil 3 times daily and cla 3 times daily.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (209 posts) at 01:58 PM
Calcium should be fine as long as you do these things: 1. Take it with or right after food. 2. Divide it up, taking the recommended dose in two different mealtimes. (The usual recommended dose is 1200 mg calcium daily, so just take one 600 mg tab. 3. Make sure it has Vitamin D in it as well--most do. 4. Don't take more than the RDA.
I have osteoporosis and have been taking medication plus calcium for over 2 years now, maybe 3 years, and one thing the doctor told me to do was cut down or cut out the diet colas. He said all colas have phosphate in them that tends to wash out calcium from the bones. (I don't think that's how I got the osteoporosis, but that was making it worse). He also told me not to waste money on coral calcium or advertised brands ( I assume he meant Citracal)but just to buy an over the counter brand that was made by a reputable manufacturer.

BTW Mellie, I did gain a little.
3 lbs. in 3 weeks (not too bad), I saw an increase of 1/2" in the chest, the waist and the hips......maybe I can get rid of this in the first week
if I try really hard.....we'll see
Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (587 posts) at 03:18 PM
I believe you can do it....that wasn't bad at all for 3 weeks! What the heck happened with me? I'm way upset about it! Well, hopefully when I weigh in again on Monday it will be gone. Hey, do you know, for our challenge do we have to report weekly? I usually don't weigh in during my challenge until I have completed 4 weeks, then weigh in every 2 weeks...I don't like doing it weekly, it can be discouraging.

I make "office calls" to several different businesses each month and have been watching her shrink.
Her name is Annette - and although the challenge is over now, she is tightlipped about who the winner is.

I just KNOW that title will bring every male in from miles around like a dog in heat....lol. Sorry to dissapoint ya guys...
I just got a call about a referral request I put in about a month ago for a breast reduction. I'm so excited! I'm so nervous! I'm so scared! I'm back to being excited! (welcome to my world..)
I know from experience that my breast size doesn't go down with weight loss. I know my bra gets looser, but that's more from the BACK shrinking than the front..ha! (yeah, nice visual, huh?)This means that I could keep DD jugs even though I lose 50+ lbs! Ack! (For those of you who are picturing Carmen Electra here and wondering what the problem is, nature doesn't work that way.. Nature is much more cruel than that. Plastic surgeons put great perky boobs on women with no body fat.. nature works ya over like a giant pile of putty that has melted in the microwave. It's ugly, it's sad, but it's life.) I also know that normal size boobies would make working out so much better. I wouldn't have to wear at least 2 bras and still be sore from a 10 min jog! My shirts would fit! I could go into the perkiness factor, but I'll just leave it at that. I could buy bras in normal stores and not at Lane Bryant! (who, by the way, has great bras for the bigger-boobie people)
Is there anyone out there who has had this surgery?? Anyone who can offer thoughts, guidance, support? (and by support I mean the non-underwire kind)

I'm excited for you! I've known 2 women who have had it done and they have been so pleased with the results. One was a softball player and the other wasn't very active but at 28 she couldn't stand the back pain not to mention the lears from guys. She was only 5'1" too. This is better then sprouting wings!

girl, I have no answers for you, but PLEASE let us know how it goes. I've been considering one too, but will wait until we have another kiddo.
I have the same probs. Everything goes EXCEPT the boobs. lol! At best I lose a HALF cup size and my DD's fit a bit looser. I hate trying on coats that are a size 12, and fit great until I get to the chest, then I can't even button them!!
I am excited for you! Micky :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (424 posts) at 01:07 PM
oh! And I saw a boob reduction on one of those surgery shows, and the girl went down to a C cup, and DIDN"T HAVE TO WEAR A BRA afterwards, too cool!

NO!! NOT have to wear a bra?? Say it ain't so!!!!! I'd be in free-boobie heaven! I don't even go get my mail without hoistin these sistas up! A strong wind might come by and I'd have to untangle them from a bush or something :)

Not really support but observation.
My neice had this procedure done 2 years ago. Her shoulders hurt because of the weight put on them for the support of her heavy breast. She was happy with the results afterwards however, she did not get on a weight loss program and has since gain weight and is right back to where she was. (sigh)

I have a friend that had hers reduced and was really happy.
A couple of weeks on this program, and I'll have a "free reduction"--that's where I lose first. I'll miss my girls . . .

I had a friend who had hers reduced about 8 years ago now - and she still looks and feels great. I've been jealous ever since. I've always been active and would be happy to be a A cup to reduce the number of sport bras I need to wear when running.
Please post about your experience, or just pm me. I would definitely like to hear about it and how it goes!
Good luck!

Oh, I get a "free" reduction too like Nicabod. I got way smaller during my first challenge, which I thought I didn't like, but then after I slacked, I was reaching for something and I was like "HUH??" because I had gained my boobs back!! This made me even more unhappy than loosing them in the first place, because if the boobs are back, the butt must be back!! I kinda liked going to do a weight workout in a tank with a built-in, and nothing else! I used to have to double-bra them! You know what they say, anything more than a handful is just a waste! LOL ;)

Ok, I broke down and bought one of those Enell Bra's that Oprah made such a big deal about, and I have got to tell you that it is AWESOME! Today is the first day I tried it, I do pretty intense "jumping" cardio and I have a lot of problem with getting good support and with this puppy my girls didn't move an inch and it was very comfortable! I didn't feel like I was in a cast! So if you are considering buying one (at $56!) they are totally worth it!
Just thought I would share! I was so excited about it today that I wanted to tell everyone but I don't think all they guys I work with would understand or appreciate my excitement! LOL

Just curious on how much everyone has spent on supplements for BFL. One of the things that always discouraged me from doing the challenge or on my own was the price. I am lucky to live/work about 10 minutes from EAS in Golden, CO and once a month they have a civil service sale and supps are anywhere from 60-90% off. First challenge I think I spent $300 and actually had $1600 worth of stuff had I got it at GNC.
Bad news is, EAS is moving and this month is the last month to stock up.
So, how much has everyone else spent?
Body for Life Forum Message by Buffy-the-FatLayer-Slayer (42 posts) at 11:29 PM
I haven't actually spent anything on BFL per say. I did buy protein powder and I take vitamins but that's it. Oh, instead of the Body for Life book I got the audio (cassettes so they were only $4.99) but I may be one of the few people left with a tape player. I listen to the tapes when I do dishes or whatever. So I guess all I've spent is $4.99 (Canadian).

I just got my EFL book. It will be good for me... I never have time to cook, and not much of a fan of spending lots of time in the kitchen either.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (89 posts) at 07:16 PM
I feel badly for saying anything negative about it. It inspires a lot of people to have some fun with their choices. I was in my "cookbook" head and not "menu inspirations" when I posted this. I didn't mean to insult anyone who was enjoying the book and the recipes.
I didn't put the energy into experimenting on my first challenge. I am ready to make this more interesting and delicious this time around. I'm playing with some of Bill's recipes (adding a tweaking) and also playing with some of my favorites from other cookbooks. I'll share my favorites for those who have the time and inkling.

Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (1 posts) at 10:16 AM
Hi,
I started on 1/1 and am using the EFL book. My husband and I are not picky eaters, so we are following the example menus in the back of the book. He is not complaining...but it seems like a lot of food for me! I am full most of the time. I just ate a breakfast burrito made with 1 egg and 3 egg whites....I am stuffed. How can I possibly lose weight this way. I have my doubts, but am going to ride this out and see where it takes me! Any advise from anyone?
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (209 posts) at 10:33 AM
Portion sizes are the key. Eating six times a day doesn't mean three course dinners. A portion size for a typical woman is less than a deck of cards for a protein, and about half a cup for a carb. A myoplex lite, which is for women, is 190 calories. "Eating" six Myoplex Lites a day would only be about 1,140 calories a day. Not that you're counting calories, but this illustrates how small the portions need be. If you are using the EFL book, be sure to read page 73. Ther, it explains that the EFL portion sizes are midway between what a man needs for maintenance and what a woman needs for maintenance. So, if you're eating the whole portion, you're likely to be gaining weight! Check the website, "eatingforlife.com for the portion sizes and nutrition information.
Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (29 posts) at 04:02 PM
Yah...be really careful with those portion sizes. I LOVE the cookbook, but my first challenge, I only lost like 5 pounds and I am pretty sure that it was due to over portioning. I am being much more careful this time around.
Body for Life Forum Message by amylame (26 posts) at 11:41 AM

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (32 posts) at 12:20 AM
Make sure you are REALLY punching and kicking. Put some force into it. If you're just extending your arms and doing leg lifts, you aren't really working too hard. I had great results from Tae-bo, but I had to really, really make sure I wasn't half-assing it.
Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (772 posts) at 06:15 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by Wrecky (214 posts) at 09:37 AM
Yep. I've really done something to my back. I went to see a massage therapist the Saturday afternoon. She worked on my back and into my gluteal muscles. She couldn't believe how tight they were. So we discussed my routine and she's thinking that my leg extension may have aggravated the sciatic nerve. She suggested icing the area...and using less weight. This sucks...the pain is crap...but less weight? Should I do more reps to ensure that I progress? Your thoughts appreciated.
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (381 posts) at 10:20 AM
I would switch exercises.... maybe do something with free weights til you feel better, sometimes I injure myself using the machines without knowing it til the next day....maybe do some dead lifts? If you stick w the same exercise I would decrease the weight til that muscle recovers.
Body for Life Forum Message by Wrecky (214 posts) at 12:22 PM
Ok...Ill give this a try. I also found some leg squats I can do without weights using a swiss ball. I'll discuss this with her after my massage today.

For women, nature is throwing you a curve ball. You are constantly swimming against the tide to maintain your best fitness. If you stop, you go in the other direction. This is not a torturous regimen. It is possible to continue this style of nutritious eating and this very minimal exercise. And the result is a very fit and trim body. I have been working out my entire life and have maintained a fit body. THIS is actually the most straight forward, and least time consuming maintenance that I can think of.

I don't make new years resolutions - I make an annual plan of what I need to do to get closer to my goals. This year they include:
1) Reach 16% bodyfat
2) Start and get half-way through a Masters degree
3) Go home for my mom's 60th in December (it's expensive from New Zealand!)
4) Buy at least two investment properties
Had my first workout of challenge 2 today, so I'm on my way. Meet with professor next week, so Masters is on it's way. Have started a savings account for Canada trip. Spent the last 4 days looking at property (we've seen over 30 in 4 days!).
Bring on 2006 - I'm ready to rock!

I hit the ground HARD yesterday! I did a fantastic UBWO, did a very light leg circuit to remind my legs they haven't been forgotten and ran for 20 minutes. I did it because I COULD. I don't plan on doing it anymore, but just felt exhilerated and loved every moment of it!!

Look! Here is the scoop, I want to play but I can't do even 2 push ups so I was wondering if I could do "girlie" pushups (which are also a challenge for me btw)? I was hoping that maybe by the end of the challenge I would be able to do those "burly" men push ups (sorry Dana and other ladies). Let me know. I'll be strategizing while I wait.

Well thanks for the encouragement TC but I want to wait for the official ok from the challenge administrator:Mr. Jeremy.
Oh and that is a good suggestion TC but I said I could do 2 that was not 2 together..at least I don't think. Ok I am a whoose!
So Jeremy I am waiting for the official ok..unless the other judges give me the go ahead. I don't want to be disqualified. Oh will there be any drug testing? Being an Olympic year I want to make sure I am in the running for the cup of coffee. Is that the gold? silver? or bronze? Ok ya ya get to push upping and quit stalling.
I'll be huffing and puffing up here in Canada..oh by the way where are the other Canadian athletes? Are we going to let the Americans win??

I can't even do 1 pushup yet! The interesting thing is that I was talking to a friend on New Year's eve about pushups without having seen the topic here! She told me to start with one per day and just build from there.
I'm already signed up for the Torch Challenge and my life has become QUITE busy so there isn't a lot of time to come in here and do much posting. I miss you guys! But I need to focus on finishing work on Friday then starting school on Monday. it's both exciting and scary!
So, I will stop in and report once in a while about how many pushups I've done.
Cross your fingers for me and hope it eventually climbs past single digits!!!
Good luck and much success to you all!!

I just read the whole thing. Knee push ups are aloud but your goal has to be for one or the other. If you cannot do real push ups or the are super difficult please do the knee push ups. this is a fun competition in honor of Julie not a war for first place. Although I will end up with the most push ups:) I would say if you can do more than 10 real push ups in a row than use real push ups as your goal if not do knee ones.

It's really powerful, how many of us would have thought to add 25, 50, 75 pushups per day into our regimine.... and now.. you complete your daily quota, and you think, Gosh, I could do 10 more before bed.. then you lie in bed, and you get up for a drink of water, and you want to do 5-10 more.. before you know it, you may have done 10,000 pushups during your transformation you would have never thought you'd do!! Cheers to all of you!!! How inspiring!!

Jeremy...I believe that puts us at 72,000 push-ups pledged!!! And it doesn't cost you a thing, except for your personal sweat, blood and tears for Julie and her TORCH! I knocked out 60 tonight after my HIIT and abs workout...I was exhausted and it felt great!
Could we get to 100,000 pledged push-ups? Could we get sponsors and raise money and awareness for Julie's cause? Where do we go from here? Who would've thunk it???

You guys ROCK...I'm really proud of all your enthusiasm....a real team!
But...after having endured 3 surgeries on my rotator cuff, placing 2 screws and several other procedures. I want everyone to please becareful of over training!!! Which is almost guaranteed by training the same muscle EVERY single day!!! Everyone knows this contradicts what we have learned from Bill Phillips. And I'm sure Julie would want you to give your muscles...time to heal...
So please...be careful!
JB

VERY GOOD point Jerry! What do you think would a better way to approach this? How about so many per week instead of per day?
BB
Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (83 posts) at 10:00 PM
Yeah that sounds good Big Bull
...or Maybe... just finish off on upper body days with...dedication Julie push-ups. Making them the HighPoint for the pecs. YES! The numbers will be MUCH lower. But we have learned training is all about quality, not quantity. And it is still in honor Julie, our Champ of Champs!
Be safe team!
Jerry

Jerry has a good point. Lets shoot for upper body days only. That brings everyones goal down by about 1/4. So divide your number by and only do the push ups twice a week. I was very sore today and I should have known better but yes I got very excited. Please only do one set.
Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (8 posts) at 10:29 PM
I tried but I could only do one real pushup, so I will commit to girly pushups--17 upper body workouts times 40 pushups=680 pushups
not nearly what other people have pledged, but it is still a goal for me since I haven't exercised in 2 years.
Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1073 posts) at 10:29 PM

first of all, glad your here....we always welcome new victims....just kidding!!!
here's ya a couple of ideas until you get some dumb-bells, etc.
I used to use the large cans of vegetables (the 20-24 oz. size) for shoulder presses, butterflies, etc. and a 5 lb. bag of flour, sugar, etc. for over head presses or as an aid for crunches.......
this is where I started years ago before I could afford any type of equipment or to join a gym
I hope this helps you in some way
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (194 posts) at 09:26 AM
water jugs filled to different levels works great too instead of dumbells, just make sure they have handles.
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (381 posts) at 10:31 AM
Yeah, you can get creative....we use our daughter( 20 lbs) to do lower body stuff... just watch your form. Also, if you dont lift very heavy yet exercise tubing is good for UBWO and is cheap- like $5 at Target... at least its better than nothing....

smartcalorie.com
is also a good site to try
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1535 posts) at 09:04 AM
Here are two that I use and then average the results. It is pretty close to caliper measurements when I do this.
http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php
http://www.healthcentral.com/cooltools/CT_Fitness/bodyfat1.cfm
Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (a.k.a. Onyx) (110 posts) at 11:25 AM
Just my two cents here... but remember to be consistent when you use one of these ball park online sites.
I say this because I did my BF on the Navy site and on mybodycomp.com and got 2 different results (22 percent vs 20 percent respectivly). Obviously I would love to use the lower number, but in thinking about it, I feel that which ever one I use I should just make sure that during the challenge I use the same one.. and thought I would pass it along to all of you..
Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (356 posts) at 11:36 AM
I used the 2 sites goingforbuff suggested and it worked out good. I have an accu-measure and kept getting diffrent numbers.
Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (484 posts) at 11:36 AM
I agree...whichever site you choose, or whichever calipers you purchase and choose to use
USE that one means of calculation it's the only way to see the true picture of your decreasing BF%

Shake - what my gut is doing when I'm doing cardio.
Dash - Hitting 10 during cardio (that kills)
Squirt - Just glad I have four restrooms in the house. OMG!!!!!

They have your wanted picture up at the chicken dept at the supermarket since you take all the chicken...

The downstairs bathroom is reserved for "Mommy Only" & most family meetings seem to take place there due to convienence...

I can imagine what this challenge will do to my house. It will slowly evolve into one big post-it note with goals, affirmations and reminders posted all over the house. When the fat pictures are developed, these will end up on my refrigerator as a constant reminder of what eating the wrong things has done to me. Fitness and weight training magazines will clutter all surfaces. Most importantly, there will be a growing pile of clothes to give to the goodwill!

Sad about the pics and measurements (total and utter embarassment), but feeling GREAT about today!!!
day one, challenge 1.....ate clean EFL style, drank my gallon of water, and hit my 10's!!!!
It was quite funny, i get to the gym and it was crowded!! No one was lyin' when we talk about New Years Resolutions!! BUT~ the difference...I will still be there after the month when everyone else pooops out!!!
i had to wait around a few min in between because people were on the machines. but still finished within 49 minutes! not bad for the 46 min suggested!
I had to re-familiarize myself again. It felt sooo good. I cant believe how easy it is to let yourself go. I watched the rerun of this season's biggest loser. I wanted to cry. These people have done so good losing their weight through plain old diet and exercise. It was so amazing to see their stories. During commercials, i was using that time to plan my day for tomorrow.
I cant believe how it makes a difference to PLAN!! I was really lacking when I tried my last challenge 9 mos ago. I wasnt motivated then. I am now! Gotta keep up with my 13 month old!
Sorry for the long post, had to give a daily re-cap! Cant wait to see where I am in 12 weeks! I'm not going to give up!!! See you at the finish line!
xoxo

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1535 posts) at 08:32 AM
I am dying! I think my arms were too close during bench press yesterday because the middle of my chest, like the sternum area is killing me...burning and sore. In fact, my 4 year old so thoughtfully woke me up at 3:30am because HE had to pee (of course, then I did too) and it was hurting so badly I couldn't get back to sleep. I even eventually took an anti-inflammatory but it didn't help. I got on the tm and it was hurting, but felt a little bit better the further I went. Then down to do abs and I was doing the hip lifts on the bench and thought I was going to just die when I leaned back to lay down and when I was getting up, it hurt so badly! I hope I didn't tear it too badly or something. Hopefully it will be better by tomorrow, but you know how it is sometimes more sore on the 2nd day...omg, I hope not. Other than that, I an feel my back, tris and biceps, so I think I had a good workout!!

I have to be in the OR doing intubations. What if I gotta pee right when the surgery starts?? How does one tell a surgeon that he has to hold off for a moment so I can relieve my bladder, for me, the lowly para
