I agree, you will stabalize after a point and you can ease off/modify your workouts and eating to maintain. Most of us that are doing new challenges are still trying to get to our ultimate goals...others are trying to get back to where they were. Whatever the reason for beginning new challenges, they are simply a way for many of us to stay on track. Or get back on track. I really don't think you'll have to worry about getting bigger. You're in it for life, right? So what is another challenge? Just a tracking method really. Just my take on it. Jennifer

I was just thinking about the American diet and the crisis we are about to face as nation due to the obesity epidemic. I read yet another sad article about the overwhelming number of Asian Americans that have type 2 diabetes. It is clear that the American diet is destroying the health of recent immigrants who previous to coming here, ate only fresh food. I have to say that I think PROCESSED foods are at the heart of so much disease. For some reason we refuse to believe that food is the most important medicine we can take. Processed foods are not as nutrient dense as fresh whole foods. I realize a lot of people come to BFL to overcome obesity, but the other side of the coin is to embrace total health. I find it hard to understand the need and desire to hang onto processed foods. Basically, these sweeteners promise a "freebie". Get a soda, but it has not calories. I remember when FAT FREE was all anyone was interested in. Well, a lot of crazy products were created without fat. Tons of people switched to margarine and other hydrogenated fats. And then guess what? We realized this stuff was way worse for you than animal fat. I stuck with my butter and ice cream and didn't run to the margarine. It just seemed like "Fake food". Wow...running on... my point is, I don't really understand why you want to hold onto these artificial foods. They aren't really food. There are good natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup. A little in your tea or whatever isn't going to make you fat. Feasting on sweets all day will. MODERATION. Variety. That is what is healthy. Mom of Three...I applaud you for realizing the connection between your health and what you eat!

Hey Ladies, I was wondering what upper body workout some of you do? I have been doing the workouts that are posted in the exercise article section on body for life. They seem to be more geared toward women, which is good. Do you have any suggestions??? Or do most of you just do the two recommended exercises that Bill suggests in the Body for Life book? Any feedback would be great thanks!!!!

I'm working out at home with a pair of adjustable Power Blocks (dumbbells) I do bench presses and flyes for my chest, seated presses and Arnold press for my shoulders, rows and pullovers for my back, extentions and kickbacks for my triceps, seated curls and concentrated curls for my biceps. (This workout kicks my booty everytime.)

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (432 posts) at 08:28 AM:
I use paramount machines at the gym mostly- my workout is: Chest press, flyes Shoulder press, delt machine Row machine for back, Lat pulldown Bicep curls w/ dumbells, hammer curls tricep machine, tricep dips or push down with cable (sorry about the non weightlifting terminology, I am no expert. But my arms are burning when I leave the gym!)

Its at least 65 degrees here in Pittsburgh! I just had the greatest HIIT workout OUTSIDE with my daughter and running stroller. She made cute noises and pointed at all the dogs along the way....just had to share my excitement.... I've been confined to the gym for at least 2 mos.because of weather and ice. What a great day! Anyone else have a great cardio today?!

Thread: Betagen and CLA (79 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (27 posts) at 07:04 AM:
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid, which can help lower the amount of fat stored after meals and helps the body break down and use fat efficiently. Research has shown a reduction of up to 9% b/f in overweight people who used it without lifestyle or diet changes, and this loss was sustained over a 2-year period. Betagen is a combination of HMB and creatine, two supplements that (supposedly) help you in gaining lean muscle mass. It also contains taurine and glutamine I believe, the two most abundant amino acids in muscle tissue, so seems to be good for packing on muscle without gaining fat. I am thinking of using Betagen myself, so would be interested to hear some testimonials from anyone who has used it?

Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1370 posts) at 07:33 AM:
I use both the CLA and the BetaGen, and love them both!! I also use the ThermoDynamX and Myoplex Lite shakes, I love them also!!! With the BetaGen I can workout so much easier then without it!!! I also have a lot less muscle soreness using the BetaGen!! BetaGen is awesome!!! Hugs, Sylvia aka Cookie1135

Hey Ryan, You mention research showing a fairly large sustained reduction in bf% levels with CLA. Where did you hear that? I have been trying to find out more on it and the most 'Scientific' info I have found comes from Udo Erasmus's site which may be negatively slanted for marketing reasons. The info he shares is interesting at least, but I have been unable to find recent (within the last year) research to sustain the point that CLA supports weight loss and is healthy. Thanks Steve

"I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves" --Joseph Smith Teach your children the morals and values you expect from them. Teach them right from wrong. lotsa communication. When they are away from you (at a friend's house, school, whatever) they probably will have that little voice in the back of their head letting them know that you wouldn't want them to listen to it... That's what happened in my house. We knew what our parents expected of us. They respected our ability as teenagers to make our own choices and stepped in to offer counsel and support. More importantly, they had faith in us that we would make good choices...that made all the difference.

Body for Life Forum Message by David870 (22 posts) at 03:35 PM:
I just want to reply to something somebody posted a few posts ago about music entertainers trying to be "the one your parents hate"... That stuff went all the way back to the days of Elvis and Little Richard, the "bad boys" of their day...then later on you had "scarier" acting groups like all the acid rock ones in the 60s...then you had Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Kiss...then later it was Ozzy, Dio, 2 Live...on and on and on... And nobody has even mentioned Marilyn Manson....remember him? Shock sells. If there wasn't a market for shock-value music, no record company would put it out (don't get me started about record companies...I once played guitar on a song that ended up on a small label's CD and I never got one thin dime off it. Not one). As the years go by, in order to stand out in the crowd and be "the music your parents hate", the rockers and rappers have to get more and more shocking to get attention. Sorry to sound bitter, but most record labels are about 3 things: 1. Making money 2. Making money 3.Finding new, interesting and creative ways to cheat artists out of their royalties or never promise them anything to start with so they can....you guessed it! be making money. So they push and promote outrage. My parents didn't put a curb on what we listened to when I was a teenager...to be honest, they couldn't even figure out what the words meant... What I'd be more concerned about would be the actions and attitudes at home. If it gets to the point where he won't respect your rules because Eminem or somebody else says he doesn't have to, it's time to have a talk about how things happen in the REAL world and about what limits are...and back the talk up with whatever sanctions you feel are necessary. But Tomcat's right. There's nothing he's going to hear in music that he doesn't already hear in school. I do know that I'm getting older....one of the guys at work turned the radio to this hip-hop/r&b station where these guys kept yelling and shouting and fussing...just on and on and on...I heard that ranting all day and it almost made me want to bang my fist into a wall! lol That stuff, all day long, just drives me crazy.

A few years back I was on a huge baby kick. Wanted to get preggo really bad. I just didn't work out so we stopped trying, life kinda got in the way. So we have been back and forth between, not wanting one and for me secretly wanting another kid really bad. Well had a talk with hubby a couple days ago, after my newly purchased birthcontrol pills mysteriously disapeared. Honestyly I am pretty sure my sister took them, she has been wanting us to try for a long time. So we decided to stop the pills and let nature take its course! I am almost in shock, I have been wanting this for so long. Our son is going to be 11 in June, but he to has been wanting a sibling. Anyway I just had to share ;) So here is hoping for a big round belly instead of 6 pack abs lol. Ursula

Whew.....we made it!  Now the trouble he gets into is his problem! Right?  Well, I doubt it, no matter what we will always be there for him and help him fight through battles he mostly creates himself.

I must say 18 years flew by, the last few have been very difficult and very scary.  I had times when I doubted he would survive...literally.  Like Tony Dungy said, at Thanksgiving everyone was so rushed that his eldest son left in such a hurry that they didn't even hug goodbye, and that was the last time he saw him.....

Hug your kids, embrace and cheerish every moment with them because you just never know....God forbid, you just never know when the last time may be.

I finally got sick and tired of problems with Microsoft Windows so last night I went and bought an iMac G5.  My wife has wanted to get a mac for quite some time but I talked her out of getting one when we got her a notebook pc 3 years ago.

I “euthanized” our desktop back in October after trying for 2 months to fix a hardware problem I could never exactly diagnose so we were due for a new computer…

Anyway, I was wondering how many guys on Tracker are using a Mac?

"Scientists studying a fast-dwindling genus of colorful harlequin frogs on misty mountainsides in Central and South America are reporting today that global warming is combining with a spreading fungus to kill off many species. "The researchers implicate global warming, as opposed to local variations in temperature or other conditions. Their conclusion is based on their finding that patterns of fungus outbreaks and extinctions in widely dispersed patches of habitat were synchronized in a way that could not be explained by chance."

Hhmmmmmmmmm.... I saw a book at WalMart tonight by Dr. Pamela Peeke called The National Body Challenge. This is the very same Pamela Peeke that authored my unfavorite book called Body-for-LIFE for Women. I checked out the website tonight when I got home and it is something to do with The Discovery Health Channel. I then thought it was funny that she has this new book and is not pushing the BFL for women book anymore. I checked out the Bodyforlife.com site and no where on the site is the women's version book. You can order Bill Phillips version.....my FAVORITE, but you can no longer find Pamela Peeke's version of BFL on the website. Interesting..... Stef

No, the first book is not new (2004). The second book (SuperFoodds Healthstyle, Proven strategies for Lifelong Health) has a copyright date of 2006. It goes into more depth about different foods in different seasons, prevention od diseases, lifestyle, and other "general topics." I was so interested in the first book yesterday. I read the whole thing!! I've bought the 2nd book today. It's added a few more foods like kiwi, dark chocolate, garlic, and honey. He also talks about which spices are the best for you. (Something I am clueless about!) And there are more great recipes... which are mostly EFL friendly. Let's try Cedar plank salmon with garlic orange glaze!!!! Yummmm!!!! Oranges, garlic, pepper, green tea, wild salmon, and a few sesame seeds. Sounds very BFL to me!!!!

It was 5.99 on sale at GNC for a 4 pack. Expensive, but SO DAMN GOOD. I just searched online for it and it looks pretty expensive in most places. Cheapest I saw was $5.99/4 pack. So good. Almost which I could dive right into the other 3 containers I have. I was just craving sugar, so glad I have these in the house. They saved me from the cookies! Teresa

Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (98 posts) at 08:37 AM:
There actually is a page in the BFL book that says bananas are okay. The list of sample authorized food are just SOME of the foods that are okay. On another page it states "foods like, bananas, apples, peaches...etc. are conveniently sized to portion. My opinion is an occasional banana is okay with protein shake (not Myoplex complete) or another protein source like cottage cheese. Just my 2 cents :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (18 posts) at 09:24 AM:
I save bananas for my post-workout meal, when a little bump in carbs is ok. i add 1/2 or a whole small banana to my shakes, which are designer whey and don't have enough carbs on their own. Hussman has them listed as an ok food, but he says less ripe is better. This is what I've learned doing BFL: it's better to eat a banana than a cookie. I don't say no to fruit and veggies if it keeps me out of the pantry. Heather Heather

Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (100 posts) at 11:03 AM:
Exactly Heather! I agree. And it just depends on the person, your eating habits the rest of the day, and how hard you are hitting your workouts. I have never added anything to my Myoplex shakes (over my past 3 challenges) and only use water, not milk. But for some reason I have started adding a frozen banana to my Myoplex chocolate peanut butter shake after my workouts lately. WOW, is it good! I probably won't continue this as I get further along, but for now it helps me mentally. It really makes me look forward to that post workout shake, which in turn gets my butt into the gym each morning. So I guess I agree with both sides on this one, it just depends on you. If you want it, have it. Especially if it keeps you from snacking on junk food, or eating more than you need to. Oh, and btw...a banana has a GI rating (glycemic index) of 52, and apples have a GI of 38. Here is a link where you can check out the GI of other foods. And the lower the GI the better. http://www.lowglycemicdiet.com/fruitsgi.html Stay Strong, Chris

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (18 posts) at 12:16 PM:
That's how I feel, too, Chris. Sometimes it's the thought of that ice cold shake that gets me through the last bit of HIIT. I also love to add frozen raspberries with the banana. I know a lot of folks here use fitday.com, and if you are keeping track of carbs/protein/fat and calories, you can easily balance out that banana. For me, that thing that I really hate are fitness plans that exclude healthy foods. here are some foods that are higher on the index than bananas as well: carrots: 49; green peas: 48; brown rice: 55; oatmeal: 49. I eat all these things on a regular basis, in controlled amounts. I would say that if you are eating cleanly and are still having trouble dropping bf, then bananas might be a good place to start eliminating higher GI carbs. But if you are still having results? Go ahead and have a banana once in a while! (who knew bananas could be the center of a debate?! :) Heath

Body for Life Forum Message by Karla (460 posts) at 12:34 PM:
Krispy Kremes or bananas...? Hmmm... I guess it depends on the person, how your body responds to various foods, etc. This person (me) ate lots of bananas during her challenge, and still got the results she wanted. By lots of bananas, I mean 3-5 a week. It wasn't a staple, but it was one of my fruit choices. I mixed it up though (sometimes apples, sometimes oranges, sometimes bananas). I don't think bananas are like, say, McDonald's. I don't think they're going to have a "Banana Me" show (like Super Size Me), showing the ill effects of bananas. Of course, if that was *all* you ate, you'd have a multitude of problems. :) Anyway, I vote !YES! for bananas. But if you have lots of troubles and challenges with losing weight, maybe avoid them based on what the people above said.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2265 posts) at 02:25 PM:
I've always been one to shoot off my mouth about fruit being way over-rated - too much sugar for what its worth, you can get the same vitamins/nutrients and more of them from vegetables, blah, blah, blah. I've gone virtually fruitless for a long time. Lately I've started to drink whey protein as meal #2 and sometimes #6. With meal #2 that protein drink is just not cutting it as a fulfilling meal so I've added a tsp peanut butter and a banana to substantiate it. It works! Better than starving for 2 hours and I'm not the best "starver" in the world so who knows what would be vacuumed up by me if I hadn't. Thats my story and I'm sticking with it. Furthermore..........I've got to agree with Karla and especially Can'tStopMe about people not getting fat - especially on something like 3 - 5 bananas a week. And Can'tStopMe - gotta do something about that name of yours!!!! Do you know how many times I have to go back and correct "can't stop me"????? Every single time!!!! From now on I think I'm going with CSM.

I dont think we really want to start adding up the calorie count of ANY food over a years period- or seeing it as a lost opportunity for x amount of pounds lost-or devalue it as a source of nutrition IF it helps to make this lifestyle a reality for YOU. who wants to live like that? Just as several people here have said- be cautious how you combine it, how often you eat it and what type of a role it plays in keeping you on the program- I used them (1/2) in protein shakes because it makes them creamier and hence more palatable. Good luck.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2265 posts) at 02:48 PM:
Rie thats what I wanted to say - get out of my head! I was thinking the same thing and thought once you start counting calories like that you'll get down to 6 staples a day, keep counting & your down to two - a geen vegetable and a can of water packed tuna.

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (223 posts) at 02:56 PM:
I eat bananas and see no reason to exclude them wholesale from a healthy diet. BUT I don't eat them every day, and I usually eat them earlier in the day or after a workout. Even though they are a 'clean' food, they are energy-dense and if you are trying to drop poundage, ease up on them or choose other lower glycemic fruits (especially closer to bedtime.) I'm thinking of berries here. And while I can't really disagree with much of what michiganmike wrote, I can follow his calorie logic using any food imaginable. For example, a 4-oz chicken breast, eaten once a day every day, adds up to 50,735 calories during the course of a year, essentially creating a lost opportunity to lose 15 pounds. But of course that doesn't make chicken a bad choice. Losing weight is still a simple matter of calories in vs. calories out. Just know that bananas are denser in energy and give you quicker sugar, and limit your intake if you're trying to drop weight and you'll be fine.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (432 posts) at 03:15 PM:
In Weight Watchers (which I did for years), a serving was 1/2 of a banana. So, I have continued, out of habit to eat bananas 1/2 at a time, as my carb source with cottage cheese or protein shakes. I need the potassium anyway. A whole banana IS a lot of calories, but there's a lot of good stuff in there, too.

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (123 posts) at 04:04 PM:
I can definitely see michiganmike's logic in looking at the reduction in potential fat loss over a year, especially if (as it was in his example) it's about whether to add a banana to a shake. Depending on the carb content of the shake itself, a whole banana could add too much sugar. One banana takes up the full carb allowance in a meal for me. Personally, if looking for additional carbs to add to a shake I'd choose berries over bananas where possible - even adding a full cup of strawberries only adds the sugar content of a third of a banana. But hey, as others have pointed out, it's much better than reaching for a cookie, and if it helps keep you on track then go for it.

Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (100 posts) at 04:12 PM:
Wow...the banana sure is controversial! LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (396 posts) at 04:18 PM:
I think Mike just meant to illustrate the difference if you added in a banana to the shake vs. if you didn't add a banana to the shake. So if you just had the shake (without the banana) you could potentially lose ten more pounds than if you had the shake with the banana. No one is saying it is a "bad food" (Krispy Kreme's on the other hand...;)but why add it into a shake (especially a complete one like Myoplex) when all it does is add extra carbs and calories? I just think there are better choices out there. But if you like bananas, who am I to tell anyone who to eat...but, I still vote no!

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (123 posts) at 04:18 PM:
It's funny isn't it!! I think it's hilarious that I'm now comparing the sugar content of bananas and strawberries when not tooooo long ago I was breaking world records in eating Cookies 'n' Cream ice cream!!! The poor old banana didn't have a chance with me back then unless it was baked in filo pastry and served with whipped cream. Now it's still not getting a chance even though it's broken free of it's extra fattening layers and trimmings. :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2265 posts) at 04:18 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (246 posts) at 04:22 PM:
Rie and Flower both make an interesting point--saying that we should not add up calories over a long time just to make a point about lost opportunity to lose weight. Why not? They seem to suggest it is unhealthy to think that way, but I think the average carcass of the average person demonstrates that they get fat just that way, a bit at a time, over a year or more, and that the problem is they DON'T think that a half a banana or a couple of chocolate kisses make any difference. But, clearly the numbers don't lie, and the bodies show the effect of too much food little by little over a long time.

Body for Life Forum Message by saint (5 posts) at 04:32 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1095 posts) at 04:48 PM:
Interesting thread... I agree that it is calories in versus calories out on the other hand what would be better eating one huge 1800 calorie meal once a day or eating 6 330 calorie meals. I think the answer is an easy one. Also remember it is about nutrients in the calories not just calories. Again I go back to the "real age diet" He says and I agree calorie poor, nutrient rich and I believe the banana is this. Also ask yourself was it created for food and it is. Power to the banana and all other fruits for that matter.

Bottom line- if you want to scrutinize and analyse every food you eat every second of your day and only choose those that are absolutely optimal- you may live a very limited life in terms of variety of foods-and you may live a very limited life in terms of living LIFE- Hence Bill Phillips saying that food is to ENJOY. If a banana once in a while makes it possible for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle then as I SAID- watch your FREQUNCY, your COMBINATION and your REASONING. This is not an all or nothing pro position- thats why it WORKS.

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (18 posts) at 05:25 PM:
Of course, when adding up calories, you have to figure that the banana could be taking the place of a different food, one that is possibly higher calorie. If you are sneaking in a banana between meals every day, then I think it's fair to total up the caloric cost of that. However, if you are having a protein shake low in carbs and calories and adding a banana in, isn't that the same as your 40/40 carb/protein meal? You can save yourself the 36,500 calories a year by not eating that banana every day, but if you are using it as a carb in a meal then you would be shorting yourself that important carb component, and a fruit at that. Banana's are a whole food rich in many vitamins and nutrients, unprocessed and not filled with all that crap store-made foods are. Heather

Consider the perspective. A choice for a banana a day may give you a lost oppotunity to lose 10 pounds over a year but if the choice is between a banana or that SNICKERS (sorry to use such foul language here) everyday for a year and the lost opportunity for 50 pounds which is where most of us have been living life and that is how we got so fat was by Snickers not bananas. So bananas used in moderation just like every other food on the Body for LIFE plan is a way to get results. So the conclusion is Eat Bananas or Don't but do what helps you have success for YOU and nobody else.

The cheat really wasn't bad at all, wasn't donuts, McD's, cookies, etc. it was almonds - just some innocent little almonds that I ate on the way home from the store. I plugged the amount into fitday.com when I got home! It was in excess of 900 cal (and quite probably more; I'm usually pretty easy on myself with this type of thing). This on top of my intake for the day was way high. The little "pie" that fitday gives you just about blew up with the fat "slice". Truly an eye-opener and that was only with almonds. I swore I'd never ever do it again and I never did; at least not with almonds. This will be harsh too so don't read if you don't want to. With what you ate is most likely in excess of 3000 cal - thats a pound. Quite easy to do but we all know how difficult it is to remove the pound don't we? I could probably out-binge you any day LOL and there is no mouth more appreciative of food than mine so I know what its like. The secret is determining if its worth it; for me it always is when its in my mouth but the results of not putting it there are far more worth it. I really need to practice what I preach!!!!!! Good luck Roe, you can easily get over this! Tracey

Another idea....make a list of thie things you really want to eat - instead of putting it in your mouth, put it down on paper. Then put the paper away. If you have another craving, write it down. Get the list back out on freeday. You can eat whatever you want (but the odds are you probably won't even want most of it.) Acknowledge the craving, write it down to get it out of the way, and move on! Sounds silly, but it does work!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2265 posts) at 03:45 AM:
Can you do something like TNT did? She made a "his & hers" pantry. Can you ask to re-arrange a section or even better a separate cupboard that is just "your space" and only open that cupboard door? It may relieve some of the temptation. Another thing I've done and it may be very insulting to other people, is take on a "I'm not eating THAT CRAP" attitude sub-consciously. Again, it may come across as rude sometimes but it kind of works.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (442 posts) at 08:20 AM:
Ask your mom to stock snacks she likes, but ones that you don't. For example, I get my husband fruit pies. I don't like them, but he does, so I can make him a treat without wanting even a small taste. Just another option. :) HANG IN THERE!! Micky

Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (98 posts) at 08:28 AM:
Good Idea, Flower! Hang in there, Daisy. Maybe you could brush your teeth when you see that CRAP! Or have your own supply of ingredients to make BFL authorized desserts. They're yummy and it feels like you're cheating!

Body for Life Forum Message by kana (399 posts) at 08:43 AM:
Before hubby decided to go with BFL, we had that crap in the house. Yeah..it was tempting, but we decided that it would be best to just keep it in ONE cupboard. I would put it up out of my reach, and constantly remind myself that -FOOD IS FUEL! I also kept alot of BFL snacks prepared and within arms reach.

Body for Life Forum Message by PharmerStephanie (27 posts) at 10:47 AM:
I find it very hard to keep on track when I go home to stay with my parents for up to 3 weeks over breaks. The best way for me to do it is to put pressure on myself by letting everyone know I am an awesome temptation-resisting machine right off the bat. Then, it becomes easier for me because I feel like there is social pressure to make the right choice, even if it is just in my head. I said I would eat a certain way, and I don't want to look like a liar or hypocrite. :) Obviously this is a less long-term situation than living with one's parents, but it really helps me even when my fiance brings home sodas and potato chips. I just have to say it like I mean it. Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (60 posts) at 11:16 AM:
Wow guys! Thanks for all of the great advice. Ashtrash- I think that's a great idea about buying the groceries FOR her. Plus she would be so thankful that she didn't have to do it. :) I also need to start making meals. I was doing that before the holidays and it worked out really well for the both of us. She was eating healthier and said she didn't come home and snack after work because she new I would fix dinner when I got home. Wow! If I could get my mom to take better care of her body just by fixing meals, that's well worth it! That's also a great idea about writing down tempting foods to save for your freeday. Most of the time when I think about a food I really want I think, "All I have to do is wait until my freeday." But I think writing it out would be so much better. Akladydi- This time last year I went to a convenience store almost every day after work and bought a pint of icecream and tons of candy. Not only did I gain about 15 or so lbs, feel extremely depressed and had no energy, but I wasted so much money!! I cannot imagine if I WORKED in that convenience store! That is the biggest test for you and it sounds like you are doing really great. If you can resist that temptation, literally all around you, then I know I can. Keep up the good work! Suz- You're so right about the gas station. I almost always pay at the pump because I don't even want to face the temptation when I check out. I do try and keep most of "my" food together. But sometimes it's just hard because the healthy stuff is on the left side of the pantry but the junk is staring at me on the right side. Also, when she buys cake, cookies or donuts she just leaves them on the counter at such easy access! When I was really struggling with my binge eating I told her to hide that kind of stuff from me but I don't feel like that's fair for her to have to live like that. I've gotten better since then but it's still a struggle at times.

My compliments to you on your courage and persistence....you know, the people I chat with on these boards impress me...I've only been a BFL person for a couple of weeks now but I realize that if a person wants a new body and a new way of life, they'll do it. They'll overcome the obstacles and make the sacrifices. And they make health the goal. I'm beginning to see that, except for your spiritual life, NOTHING is more important than a person's health. You can be fabulously rich and talented and be loved and respected by many people, but where are you without your health? You'll never have a true quality of life without it....and all the things we have to juggle in life (school, careers, marriages, families) don't matter if we don't take care of ourselves. Thank you for reminding me how a person can triumph in the midst of some pretty serious odds.

Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (3 posts) at 12:46 AM:
I use Loreal's sublime gelie med/dark. It leaves your skin super soft and doesnt have an orange glow. If I had my top pick though I would use st. tropez it's the best I have EVER used! But it's a bit pricey. I was actually going to look on ebay for it. If you havent used self tanners before make sure you exfoliate BEFORE you shave and then put your tanner on right after you dry off. Just use all self tanners sparingly around the ankles, knees and elbows. Hope that helps! Carmel

Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1370 posts) at 08:00 AM:
I have to agree with Carmel!! The Loreal sublime is the absolute best!!! That is what I used in my 12 week pictures. I have used both the med/dark and the deep dark. I used the one that is tinted so I can see how well I am putting it on. I start applying it everyday about 3-4 days before my pictures. And like Carmel said, make sure you exfoliate well before using any self tanner. I wish you all the best!!! Hugs, Sylvia aka Cookie1135

Body for Life Forum Message by kana (399 posts) at 08:46 AM:
Try doing a search here, for self-tanners. I know this topic has come up in the past..with a lot of our comments and which worked best for who. Someone had recommended the Jergens Natural Glow daily moisturizer. I have been using it, and love it. It doesn't streak, and looks natural- but it is not very dark...just gives you a healthy glow. At any rate, remember to exfoliate.

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (38 posts) at 08:49 AM:
I use Clarins alot... a bit on the expensive side but I thought it always produced a nice even natural looking "fake tan" ;-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (59 posts) at 09:24 AM:
Any recommendations for applying it? I have always used the Neutrogena kinds, so maybe it's the brand, but no matter what I always end up with streaks. And how the heck are you supposed to do your back??? My BF refuses to help (mostly because I've complained about how bad I am at applying it, so he figures he won't be much better :)

Body for Life Forum Message by kana (399 posts) at 09:36 AM:
I wear medical gloves so it doesn't stain my hands. That seems to work really well. As for applying to your back...double jointed?? I have seen lotion applicators for the back...it's similar to a sponge on a stick (roughly). If I am doing it myself, I try to tackle my back from every position imaginable. I have it down to missing a tiny circle in the middle of my back, and I am NOT double jointed.

Body for Life Forum Message by MissionGirl (3 posts) at 09:54 AM:
I us ModelCo tan airbrush in a can. You get it at sephora. It tans instantly and looks so natural. Smells like cocoa butter too. Highly recommend it! http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P96122&categoryId=B70

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (59 posts) at 10:11 AM:
Okay, is it easier to do your back if you use the spray one like that MissionGirl?

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (35 posts) at 11:03 AM:
I use neutrogena with the color in it so I can see where it is going on AND I moisturize with a regular moisturizer beforehand. Thats what I used for my first week 12's. I also spray tanned once but the bulk of it was neutrogena. For applying, I wash my hands vigorously afterward and then have my darling hubby apply it to the backs of my hands.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rie (476 posts) at 11:16 AM:
As far as the streaks, the trick is to not stop rubbing it in until it is completely dry- that is, if you're still moist after rubbing it in- you havent rubbed enough- if you google "applying self tanners" ( and similar) you will find whole web sites devoted to it-I like magic tan type booths- a lot of tanning salons have them- you go in, it sprays a fine mist all over, front and back and by the time you step out you're almost dry!

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (60 posts) at 11:21 AM:
I also use Loreal sublime but I don't use it everyday because it begins to look too orange. I've tried putting it on my back because it just seems to hard. How much does it cost to go to a magic tan booth? Does it smell, how long does it last? I stay away from tanning bed because it's so bad for your skin!

Also, don't put on clothes until it is dry, because you will rub some off and turn you clothes orange.

Body for Life Forum Message by MissionGirl (3 posts) at 01:30 PM: Re:
Hillary said: Okay, is it easier to do your back if you use the spray one like that MissionGirl? It's easy for me to tan my back. As long as you spray light and a few inches away. That way you don't need to rub it in. Just wait til it dries before you get dressed. I am wearing the spray in my profile pic. You can see there how natural it looks and like I said, the tan is instant! :-)

Not really one day is just going to create a zig zag effect. Keeping your body guessing on it's caloric intake. I just would not follow it for days in a row. It's not like exceeding your calories by 1000-2000 cal. that causes damage. Just move back to your regularly scheduled program. T

Scotfarcus was challenge 1, Oohlala is C2! I chose that name because it is the name of my business and in general it fits my personality! C2 is more personal this time, so I felt I needed a name change to reflect it! Thanks

Way to go Scott! Ok, so I have to ask more about your business with a name like that! So spill it...what do you do?

Body for Life Forum Message by Oohlala (30 posts) at 09:56 AM:
Well, you might assume that a business with that name might be a little risque, but it isn't! I own a nail salon that specialized in pink and white acrylic nails also known as "French Nails". I have always used the phrase to express things that I like, so I use it for my business! When I look at my but in the mirror I hope to be using the phrase for that and not my nails!!

Ok so my second week is drawing to a close, just a run in the morning and then no more workouts this week. Did anyone else go thru a phase of being exhausted around this time in their challenge? Please tell me this is normal. My food intake is right on schedule and I am getting right at 1900 calories a day, which is up from the 1400 or 1500 I would take in before the challenge. I feel fine till around 3 pm or so then I just wanna crash, maybe im not getting enough sleep who knows?

Body for Life Forum Message by stepor (59 posts) at 10:39 AM:
You're training for a mini-marathon right? If so, what's your cardio like? When you lift weights, do you smell amonia afterword, if so you are burning muscle big time. How much sleep do you get? And what kind of carbos are you eating? I've been a bit tired, but my sleep is down as well due to my wife returning to school and studying in the evening. But I'm not exhausted. Outside of some jitters after a fat burning supplement Wednesday, I feel really good. Steve

Body for Life Forum Message by stepor (59 posts) at 10:42 AM:
Another question... Are you eating really good vegies and meats? I saw someone on the board had anemia (low iron count in blood), that could happen if your vitamins aren't right. There is also a sugar question, but that is more a function of the carbos and should actually be getting better if so...

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (35 posts) at 10:50 AM:
I've gotten he mid-day sleepies for a long time; for me, I foudn they are often exacerbated by dehydration. If I drink a couple glasses of H20 it seems to help. On the anemia, if you're anemic your side effects would be VERY severe...dizziness, sleepiness...get a blood test to determine. If you're not getting 8 hours a night, taht could be it. Everybody needs 8.

Body for Life Forum Message by Runningsouthernstyle (40 posts) at 10:51 AM:
stepor, Yes I am training for a mini marathon. right now my cardio is 4 days a week. MON off or real slow 2 miles (12 min miles to run the soreness out from Saturday) Tue 4 miles WED off or speedwork (800 meter intervals) THUR 4 miles Fri off SAT- long run 7 miles this week SUN- off or real slow 2 miles (12 min miles to run the soreness out from Saturday) Im looking at my foods over the past week and all of my carbs have come from grapes, a tangerine, whole wheat tortillas, brown rice, myoplex lite, and phosphagen. I am thinking that it has something to do with being out in the freezing weather all day on WED. It was snowing and I didnt feel my feet all day, gotta love german winters. Since all of this started that night.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (432 posts) at 11:00 AM:
Make sure you get enough carbs on days you run. Any time I do a run that's longer than the BFL recomended 20 min HIIT, I get REAL tired, during the run. My body is used to being very energetic during runs coz I used to eat WAY to many carbs. Now, frankly, I don't think I get enough for marathon training, but I really want to lose weight, so I just figure I'll have to deal with the tiredness. 10 lbs off your body=20 min off your marathon time, all other things being equal. I will increase my carbs 2 weeks before my goal race though.

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (18 posts) at 12:21 PM:
RSS, I am experiencing this now, too. I also did the first challenge I did 2 years ago. It got better for me, and I think it has to do with all the hard work our bodies are doing, building up muscles and recovering from workouts. I like to take a little 20 rest in the afternoons, and that helps to revive me. I'm also going to bed early so I get a solid 8-9 hours of sleep at night. Of course, one of my little ones is sick at the moment so sleep has been a bit short the last few nights. Try to take care of yourself, get lots of rest, drink lots of water, and if it doesn't get better in a couple of weeks I'd see a doctor to rule out any other causes. Take care and good luck with your training! I SO admire people who can run marathons. It takes so much dedication to train for one. Heather

thanks for the advice guys, I have been looking back thru my records and see that since WED, i havent been drinking nearly the same amount of water as before. Thanks again for the help and encouragement and thanks to ROBIN for giving me the idea to check my water. RSS

NBC is running commericals for the Torino Olympics with a song called 'Someday' by Flipsyde playing. It's a great 'pump you up' song. But I just found the lyrics....Uh Ha....No wonder NBC only uses 30 seconds of words! Ha! "Someday" [Chorus] Someday we gonna rise up on that wind you know Someday we gonna dance with those lions Someday we gonna break free from these chains and keep on flyin' [Verse 1] They tellin' me it's all good just wait You know you're gonna be there someday Sippin' on Jim Beam ok Gotta get these things one day Till then do another line you know Searching for that other high Stop or I gotta steal then steal Kill or I'm gonna be killed I got a sack in my pocket Conscious yellin' drop it You know we're gonna lose it someday And we tryin' to hold it all together but the devil is too clever so I'm gonna die you gonna die we gonna die Someday one day I said [Chorus] Someday we gonna rise up on the wind you know Someday we gonna dance with those lions Someday we gonna break free from these chains and keep on flyin' [Verse 2] Try to lie but it ain't me Ain't me Try to look but I can't see Can't stop right now cause I'm too far and I can't keep goin' cause it's too hard In the day in the night it's the same thing On the field on the block it's the same game On the real if you stop then it's no pain but if you can't feel pain then it's no gain Rearrange and you change and it's all bad and you try to maintain but you fall back And you crawl and you slip and you slide down Wanna make it to the top better start now So I hold my soul and I die hard All alone in the night in the graveyard Someday one day I'm gonna be free and they won't try to kill me for being me Hey someday [Chorus] Someday we gonna rise up on that wind you know Someday we gonna dance with those lions Someday we gonna break free from these chains and keep on flyin' If you know how this is Gonna see it's not that easy Don't stop get it till it's done From where you are or have begun I said keep on try a little harder to see everything you need to be Believe in your dreams That you see when you're asleep [Chorus] Someday we gonna rise up on that wind you know Someday we gonna dance with those lions Someday we gonna break free from these chains and keep on flyin'

Body for Life Forum Message by leankat (22 posts) at 02:32 PM: #@*#@! Back injuries
I just need to vent a little frustration. I have been plagued by this blasted back injury for the last 11 years. I finally found a physical therapist who can help me, have been pain free for almost 2 months and nursed it along and the first week I try some strenuous exercise, my cervical vertebrae rotates and pinches a nerve (owwwww!). So, I missed my cardio workout yesterday to go the PT (and I like cardio) and they tell me to take it easy for a week or two!!!?? What do you think that means???? Can I do this program and " Take it Easy"? Frustrated in Seattle

Body for Life Forum Message by BIG BULL (896 posts) at 02:38 PM:
I have battled back issues for 20 years! I know your pain. I would say get as educated as you can, but you probably have already done that. I have used a chiropractor and PT combined to get educated and learn how to take care of my lower back/sacroiliac problems. It is tougn, but the I have found the elliptical to really be the answer as far as cardio is concerned. BB

Body for Life Forum Message by FlyerFan (36 posts) at 02:40 PM:
Well, I don't know much about the specifics of back injuries, but something I have done recently to ease the stress put onto my back & shins was changed my cardio from the treadmill to the elliptical machines. It has helped tremendously. About 3 weeks ago I was on the treadmill & overheard a staff member explaining the elliptical machine to a new member. She said it would be better on the body. I find also that I am getting better cardio workouts too. Good luck.

Am a little more nervous about doing ubwo but will try the same tactic and see.

Thread: Free day..to take or not to take?? (120 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (2 posts) at 02:38 PM: Free day..to take or not to take??
Im curious if anyone has noticed a difference from either taking or not taking free days, or by having all out binge type free days vs. having a more modest less indulgent free day and the effects on progress that it had? Reason I am asking is that im feeling horribly guilty on my free day so Im wondering if it will be ok to skip the free day, OR should I tell myself to NOT feel guilty becuase others made progress with no problem despite the free day?? I know i know its in the program, BUT did anyone make faster progress by not taking the free day or at least not pigging out on that day? Thanks for any input for a newbie :) JOJO

Body for Life Forum Message by FlyerFan (36 posts) at 02:43 PM:
Don;t feel guilty at all. I for one take an all out binge. It helps me the rest of the week. Looking forward to it towards the end of the week after regretting it at the begining. But according to Bill, that's why it's there.

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1590 posts) at 02:43 PM:
I skipped 1 freeday my last challenge and noticed a BIG difference. This challenge I've gone 13 days so far with no free meals and I intend to last atleast another week. I'm eating plenty of calories though, so I don't know if you'll be able to respond the same way. I think I've actually gained a little weight even but at the same time lost an inch off my waist. So I guess the bottom line is if you feel like skipping it then go for it. Just whatever you do don't binge at a later date.

Body for Life Forum Message by AirSpace (111 posts) at 02:53 PM:
I say that the best free day is the one that best helps you reach your goals! If you are constantly finding yourself battling cravings and cheating throughout the week, make sure to eat those things on free day so that you can be clean during the week! If you find that taking a free day is sending you into an uncontrollable binge that sets you off plan for more than one day... don't do it! limit it to a free meal or set some other boundaries! If you find that your progress is stalling due to a sustained decreased calorie level, but don't want to touch junk food - make your free day a high-calorie "clean" food day where you eat on plan but bigger portions and add some extra healthy fats. Feel free to experiment in your first challenge with what works best for YOU... and do NOT feel guilty! just my two cents :) Erin

Body for Life Forum Message by rbantau (4 posts) at 02:55 PM:
I think the free day is really important. I'm just a noob to BFL but I think it is important for several reasons. First, people who have a pretty good chunk of weight (no pun intended) to lose have obviously struggled with weight loss. You've probably struggled with will power and with sticking with other programs. Like one of the previous people said, this gives you something to work for. It is something to look forward to and you get one every week. I also think it's important because I have read from more than one source that it's beneficial to "shock" your system now and then so it doesn't get into a rut. I think that the people who really see a difference by not taking the cheat day are more likely people who have 25 pounds or less to lose. I think the key here is to not stuff yourself but eat what you want and keep up the portion control. Just my $0.02

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (432 posts) at 03:10 PM:
Free day revs up your metabolism in case you body has gone into starvation mode. It also satisfies any cravings you may have had that week. You gotta do it. Dont feel like you have to binge, but eat whatever you feel like eating, and stop when you're full. Change in calories/content of food once a week is a good thing.

Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (100 posts) at 04:20 PM:
Not to beat the dead horse, but I DO think free days are very important. Not only mentally but physically. I think Reagiesmom said it best up there. I personally lost 30 pounds of fat on my last challenge and I always utilized my free day, including a glass of wine or beer with at least one meal. BUT...of course everyone is different so you need to experiment and find out what works best for YOU! Chris

Body for Life Forum Message by saint (5 posts) at 04:39 PM:
Kajole, according to your profile you have lost 6 lbs which is three times more than you have lost in the last 2 years - why should you feel guilty about your free days? If you can keep this rate you might lose another 30 lbs over the next 10 weeks. If you do a second challenge you could lose all the 65 lbs you gained aafter your accident.

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1095 posts) at 04:50 PM:
I would say yes and read the cheater's diet and you might even see a better reason to do this.

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (18 posts) at 05:18 PM:
The first 9 months I did BFL I had incredible free days, and would literally undo an entire week's worth of work. Free days don't work very well for me, because I tend to be a binger. This challenge I'm handling a little differently, and am only taking one free meal on Sunday evenings. At least for awhile. It's been really nice to see big changes in measurements these last few weeks. Like others have mentioned, everyone is different and you just need to find what works for you. I believe that it is important to have a higher calorie meal or day once in a while to shock your metabolism into believing it's not starving. Also, for some people it's really critical that they can have one day where they can eat everything they've been craving all week to stay on track. Heather

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (226 posts) at 05:36 PM:
No guilt, baby, take the free day. My first challenge, I had an all out feeding frenzy on free day and I had GREAT results. Do what works best for you, but don't keep yourself from something if you really want it!

In the bodybuilding world people have used the zig zag theory which is raising your caloric once, twice or even three days out of the week. Now the best way to do this would be to increase portions and then go back to normal but another effective way is to have a cheat day because cheat foods tend to be higher in calorie. But in the end do whats best for you just make sure body does not adjust and you become a fat storer instead of a fat burner

Body for Life Forum Message by starbound25 (46 posts) at 05:54 PM:
i've been on the program for a year and have had pretty much pig out sessions on every single freeday, 70lbs later it is a testiment to the fact that the cheat day does in fact work with the plan good luck

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (27 posts) at 05:58 PM:
I also enjoyed my free day to the full in a previous challenge, and still had great results (30lbs fat loss). Don't feel like you [i]have[/i] to binge on your free day, but please don't feel guilty about eating foods you like. Even if you fancy a mega-binge on your first couple of free days, chances are your body won't be able to cope as you progress on the program, so free days become self-regulating over time anyway.

Thread: Week 1 progress (76 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by saint (5 posts) at 03:13 PM: Week 1 progress
I thought I would post my progress and thoughts after 1 week of BFL. Summary First, in summary its great. In 7 days I have gone from 210 to 204 and lost 1.5 ins from my waist, bf from 31.1% to 28.9% - probably all water loss, but hey, who cares. My target is 190 and bf 20% which ow looks very achievable. Exercise I put a bench and weights in my garage and for cardio I use my road bike attached to a static trainer. My wife is doing this also so we didn't have time for us to both go to the gym in the morning since we have a child to look after and jobs to go to. I bought a bike new seat for my wife so she just uses the bike after me. This has meant that we have to get up 30 mins earlier to do the exercise programme - no big hardship and you really do feel great for the rest of the day. On the weights I still haven't managed to get the weight on all of the exercises right, some turn out fine, some too light, some too heavy, but to be honest my focus is weight loss the strength exercises will sort themselves out in time. I love the cardio HIIT. I tried to spend 20 mins on the bike attached to the trainer before I started this challenge, just at the same resistance level and I couldn't, so I did not have much hope of lasting through 20 mins of HIIT. Wasn't I surprised, that even though physically HIIT was harder, mentally it was a great deal easier because (i think) of the variation and that fact that level 6 and 7 feel so much easier after level 9, than sticking at 6 or 7 for 20 mins. Food Luckily neither of us have a sweet tooth so the food choices seem endless. Portion sizes are a lot less than I am used to but I now get to eat six times a day which by 9pm is usually hard to do. The really fantastic thing for me is that all the other 'diets' i have been on have said either I cannot eat meat or I cannot eat bread/pasta/rice/potatoes. After a week of sticking to one of these groups I am desperate for the other. I must be lucky, I get to eat virtually everything I like on BFL. I was initially sceptical about eating bread based products (pitas, wholemeal bread, crisp bread), potatoes, pasta and rice but I decided to see what the results were. I have eaten these food groups probably at least 3 times a day and my results have been great. Any food plan that allows me to eat smoked salmon and low fat cream cheese on crispbread daily while maintaining planned weight loss gets a big tick in my book. Alcohol Not had any so that is a good thing. I do like wine and beer and realistically have been a fairly heavy drinker most of my adult life. I know heavy is relative but for me it had got to the point where it was getting a bit out of hand. Today is my free day and I am going to meet some friends for a beer. I thought seriously about canceling but then I decided that this has to be a lifetime commitment and having a beer is part of my social life. So in exactly the same manner as the food groups I will see what happens. If I can keep to my goals and have a few beers on a Saturday evening then that will suit me fine. If it means I will miss my goals I'll review. Water Now this is weird. I used to drink mostly tea. I now drink tea once or twice a day because I drink so much water. The annoying think is that I need to get up and go to the bathroom at least once while I am asleep - sometimes twice. I am going to reduce the amount of water I drink in the evening to stop this. Here is the weird thing - I used to wake up fine, feel pretty good, have a shower, dress, make breakfast and have a 1 cup of tea with breakfast. Now I wake up and I don't feel fine - in fact I feel like I have a mild hangover and the first thing I need to do before anything else is drink a pint of water, probably followed by one or two more pints by the time I have worked out and had breakfast. In fact the more water I drink the more I seem to want. I used to sip cups of tea through the day, now I gulp pints of water. That's it I will let you know how week 2 goes. I do have progress photos on my camera, I will post them when I get around to downloading them.

Sounds like things are going pretty good. Way to go! I, too, like the fact that it doesn't eliminate essential food groups. We always look for the whole grain items with the highest fiber content. Its crazy to me to find "whole wheat" bread with no fiber in it. What good is that? My husband and I are at the end of week two and we haven't had any problems sticking to the plan. I thinking maybe the "morning hangover" is because you are detox-ing. All that water you are drinking is maybe flushing you out. Not to mention the interrupted sleep. I hope it gets better for you. Good luck with your challenge!

Hey, How do you like the static trainer for your bike and where did you get it? I have been thinking about getting one. It looks like you are on the right track and well organized and prepared. Keep up the good work!

Body for Life Forum Message by saint (5 posts) at 07:34 PM:
Trainer is great. I just set the resistance on the trainer and use the gears to increase the cardio intensity. I also put a computer on the bike to measure cadence to make sure I don't start to slack. I prefer it over exercise cycles because I can clip my shoes into the pedals and as a cardio workout it is better than going on the road for 20 mins. I got it from my local bike shop.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (226 posts) at 05:23 PM: OH YEAH BABY -- IT'S ON! (But falling off, LOL)
The pants I wore today were a size 20. 2 weeks ago they felt a tad big, but just a tad. They looked and felt fine. The jeans I normally wear are size 18, and I've been stuck at the same size since the end of C1 in April. Today, those same size 20 pants were practically falling off of me, I kept feeling like I was hitching them up all day and if I sucked in my gut, poof! They'd fall down. So I remembered I had a gift card for TJ Maxx from Christmas that I hadn't used yet so I left work early and went over. And the pants I came home with are.... (drum roll, please...) A SIZE 16!!!!!!!!!! And to tell you the truth, they are just a bit loose. Not so loose that I even bothered looking for a 14, but I may not have these for long! And they were only $10 so I didn't feel bad using my gift card on pants I may only be able to wear for a few months. WAHOOOOOOOO! This is the best week 2 ever!!!

Hey folks, thought I would put this up here so folks know where they are in my BFL chain mail experiment, lol. People wanting to join can simply sign up here. It'll be easier on my slightly swollen head :) There are two sets in circulation so wait times should be somewhat reduced. Nobody pays postage to get them. When one is ready I just pm next in line looking for a mailing address, and the person currently in possession sends them along. Also I would appreciate it if folks keep up a log with the discs, so someday when I get them back, I can see where they have travelled ( shooting at least for the lower 48 and all Canadian provinces ) Next Up: Joe (A.K.A Onyx) Angelic 4077 Jennifer A TCStone Flower Supergirl Scrappinmichelle Lala Jpark PKM Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by Insanityx3 (118 posts) at 06:49 PM: Water question
Ok I have been drinking 10 to 12 servings of water a day..before drinking so much water I would wake up in the morning and be thirsty but just get something to drink and be ok. Now when I wake up in the morning I feel like I am hungover dizzy n such. Seems I am more thirsty now that I all this water then before when I didn't drink as much water. Is this normal?...cause it drives me bonkers to feel so crappy when I wake up.

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (27 posts) at 07:01 PM:
The training aspect of BFL will make you considerably more thirsty especially as you have only recently started, as will the increased protein intake from the meals (in my experience). So it's most likely just your body adjusting to the program. Ideally you want to drink enough water so that your urine is clear. If you still feel dizzy etc after week 2-3, probably best to consult a physician.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (751 posts) at 07:06 PM:

I remember the first time I did a challenge, I always had to have water at the side of the bed because I was constantly waking up in the middle of the night looking for water. But that hasn't happened in a long time, maybe it is something that your body eeds to get used to.

water believe it or not is a natural diretic. The more you drink the more you need. Weird huh? but as you're drinking all this water you're also flushing all those nasty toxins out of your body and adding water to your muscles which makes you stronger. Neat eh?

No cheating and we're really fixing some delicious meals. I need to find more filler food though. My mid day meals are kind boring. The workouts feel great and I feel some of my old strength returning. I used to have frequent back pain when I walked for more than a few mins and now I feel like I can go forever. This is great and I can not WAIT until the end of this challenge. This is one of the best things we could have done for ourselves and for our family. Oh, and I'll say now that my wife is "wannabegreat" . I didn't say so in the first post simply because I didn't want to sound like "Hey. It places a lot on my shoulders to completely succeed and make a change for the better, but it only helps me stay focused. Not only do I tell them where to go to see the pictures, but if i'm near a computer with someone, I'll go to the website and show them. One time we went to the science center in St. Louis where they have computers there for everyone to use and log on the internet and I loaded up my pictures and left them on the screen then walked away... I'll do everything I can to encourage BFL to anyone willing to make a change in themselves, and if my pictures is the thing that motivates them.. Then I'm happy. -Ed-

OK, so I havent started the challenge yet. As I start planning ahead I realize I can't stand cottage cheese and it seems to be a major snack item. Any other quick protein foods that may work?

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (79 posts) at 09:02 AM:
I'll tell you what Hads... I too hated Cottage Cheese about 4 weeks ago, but after reading BFL and EFL I realized that Bill Phillips mentions cottage cheese as one of the best foods to eat(for quick & easy). So, I told myself that I had to start eating it somehow... The first week I tried everything.. Salt, sugar, spices, salad dressing.. You name it and I tried it. And believe me, some of those were just downright TERRIBLE. So.. to make an already long story longer... I started using flavored yogurt, and fruit (orange chunks) and I would mix this up in the morning in two seperate containers and there were two mid meals. Very easy and I have to say.. I love it! Yes, cottage cheese, the stuff that used to make me gag, I now love with a passion. However, it still makes me sick to my stomach plain. This is just something for you to think about that may help you out. -Ed-

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (27 posts) at 09:16 AM:
Join the club, I hate it too. Some people will probably advise you to blend it in with other meals so the taste (or lack of) is less noticeable. My advice...if you don't like it, just avoid it. BFL is meant to be a program you can live with long-term, there is no point choking it down if you can't stomach it. There are plenty of other authorised protein sources out there to choose from, just use one of those instead.

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (174 posts) at 09:17 AM:
I don't like cottage cheese, but have grown to like the blended CC, yogurt and fruit mixture. I like cheese cake so yogurt mixed with CC sortof is the same taste to me. Give it a shot and blend the CC so you can't tell it CC. Linn

Body for Life Forum Message by TaraC29 (128 posts) at 09:24 AM:
I am also a former cc hater and I really believe that if I can learn to like it...anyone can! I started out blending it up with ff/sf pudding mixes or protein powder to get rid of the chunks. Then I had to get use to the texture and I did this with ff Yoplait yogurt like Bill suggests...and finally I got use to the flavor of cc by just mixing it with 1/2 c of fruit chunks. I am a total convert now...I buy 4-5 big containers of it a week!

Good luck in your journey to loving the chunky stuff! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (28 posts) at 09:24 AM:
Hads, Have you tryed different brands of cottage cheese? Some are thicker than others and some have larger curds. I have noticed that I dont like the thick kind. It is a consistancy thing for me. But mixing with yogurt will do wonders!

Body for Life Forum Message by Andrew80k (3 posts) at 10:01 AM:
Definitely try different brands as the taste can be radically different from one brand to another. I live in Colorado but I have lived a lot of places. By far my favorite CC was a Danish brand that I ate when I lived in Europe. But I also like the lowfat Kroger brand. I HATE Breakstone's. Bleh! Getting a less thick, smaller curd tends to be better, but is not always.

You can do it without cottage cheese. Here are some other snack options: boca burgers and sausages- high-protein, low fat, lots of soy.Don't use substitutes; boca is the only soy burger worth eating soy nuts - also made with soy. These are the easisest snack you can get your hands on. I do BFL entirely without meat or dairy. I eat a ton of fish, soy and beans. Just be glad you don't work near me.

I'm new to the forums but have been lurking for a couple weeks. Started my first challenge in 4 years on the 8th and am looking forward to changing my life this time instead of just doing a 12 week workout program. My last challenge I lost 23 pounds of fat and gained 9 pounds of muscle. Dropped 15% body fat. Didn't quite reach my goals but I thought I made good progress. Over the last 4 years I have regressed considerably. I didn't gain all the weight back, but I was working hard to get there. :) Decided I was tired of being tired, having no energy, and at 39 and the father of 2 young girls, I ain't gettin' any younger. I have a lot of goals and while my planning skills leave something to be desired, they are getting better. Anyway, just wanted to say hey and I like the motivation and support you guys provide. I LOVE MY CROCKPOT! Since I work 5 or 6 days a week and hate to cook after a long day I use the crockpot alot. You can get a natural turkey breast, add some water, onions, garlic and rosemary and let it cook all day and come to a wonder meal. All you need is a salad and some potatoes or brown rice, mmmmm good and healthy. Then, I drain off the broth, put it in the frig and let the fat come to the top and harden, skim it off, add vegetables and any left over turkey breast and put these back in the crock pot for soup the next day! I love soup in the winter!

This isn't a crockpot recipe, but a crockpot hint. Whenever I'm cooking something that needs shredded chicken, like the EFL Enchiladas or Green Chili, I throw frozen chicken breasts in water or fat free broth (for the soup) in the crockpot and cook it all day. It saves me defrosting time and it saves me the 30 mins. or so it would take to boil them when I get off work. Plus, they just fall apart.

What is the recipe? I am always looking for additional things to do with one of the few veggies I actually like!

I've been searching for Crock pot recipes and SUNSET magazine published a few this month. Tried this out this week and loved it. So flavorful (spicy). 2.5# boned beef chuck 1 can (14.5 oz.) chopped tomatoes 1 can (7 oz.) chipotle Sauce (I used Ponce De Leon, Knorr and San Marcos make one too. This is not salsa, but a sauce. If you can't find a chipotle sauce, a salsa will work too) 1 can (4 oz.) jalapeno (you can skip this if you don't want it too hot...I went for it!) 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons ground dried New Mexico chile (or regular chili powder) 1 tablespoon honey 2.5 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspon ground cumin 2 cups beef broth (unsalted) Trim excess fat from beef. Put in crockpot. Add tomatoes (with juice) chipotle sauce, jalapenos, onion, garlic, ground chile, honey, salt and cumin; pour broth over the top. cover and cook till beef is very tender when pierced (8 hours) With a heavy fork, tranfer meat to a rimmed board or plate. Shred with two forks. Ladle out half the sauce and reserve. I used an immersion blender and blended the sauce and veggies to make a thick sauce. You can pour it in a blender or food processor too. Put the shredded meat back in the sauce and let it cook, uncovered. You can spoon this meat onto crusty bread to make sandwiches. For my kids, I cut a crusty roll in half. I piled the beef on one side and sprinkled shredded cheddar on both sides. Put it in the oven on broil for about a minute or two till the cheese melted. For me: I put it over a bed of brown rice and black beans. Then I put a dollop of greek yogurt on top and garnished with cilantro. This is SO flavorful and it is cooked without oil. ENJOY.

I think it would be really cool if this site had a MY SPACE or FACEBOOK feel to it. You could have a friend list and a wall people could sign. Ya know, things like that. Anyway, it's just a suggestion, I still think this is an excellent site for Lifers.

I just hate measuring in pounds and inches.Wouldn't it be more simple to measure everything by kilograms and centimeters?LOL i'm really having trouble with this.(I'm from Europe)

Simpler for who? For those of us in America, we barely ever use the metric system. I'm not sure why we're not on the band wagon with the rest of the world. I'm pretty sure you can find converters online to help you.
