Thread: Milled Flax Seed vs. Flax Seed Oil (92 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Roe (42 posts) at 12:33 AM:
Oil in the bottle MUST BE COLD PRESSED< AND REFRIDGED! Also, flaxseed that is cooked (grain matierial) losses some nutirional value as far as "blockers for your estrogen." i did a lot of research on flaxseed. My mom passed away from breast cacner and flaxseed is real big int he cancer world.

Body for Life Forum Message by Roe (42 posts) at 12:37 AM:
Just make sure you keep it cold, or its worth nothing! sorry Roe posting, forgot to tell you... Flaxseed is the BEST form of "food" you can put in your body, my Opinion. So many wonderfuls cancer "free" links between the two to benefit you. I perfer it over oil. i also supplement it in my baking. So good. Hubby cannot eat it though, says it clogs his throat. Roe

I ordered the Hoodia and the 'right before bed' Hoodia blend and they did nothing for me really except constipate me. It was all the water that I had to drink with each serving before each meal and bedtime that made a difference. Save your money and buy some good food and some EAS suppliments and keep to the plan.

Body for Life Forum Message by MomOfThree (13 posts) at 09:21 AM:
I want to reply to a few comments posted here. First, there was a comment about Dr. Mercola and others on the internet wanting to sell you their books and supplements. I have been a member of Dr. Mercola's site for a couple years now and have never been, nor have I felt, pressured to spend a penny on his books, supplements or anything else for that matter. By the way, the person who made this comment is doing the Body For Life program ... correct? Doesn't Bill Phillips have books and videos he wants you to buy? Doesn't EAS have supplements they want you to buy? As a matter of a fact, you cannot even participate in the competition if you don't take at least ONE of their supplements! For this reason, I do the program, but will not be competing ... as their meal replacement shakes and bars have Splenda/Sucrolose in them. Secondly, for those of you who believe that you are using a "safe amount" of Splenda ... remember, if it is not natural, it is never safe. Also, if you have stated that you only use Splenda once a day by adding it to your Oatmeal, coffee, tea or whatever ... you may want to check the list of ingredients on any and all meal replacement or protein bars and/or shakes that you are using as part of your program. SAS, I am sorry that you had to experience the ill effects of this chemical first hand, but am thankful that your mother assisted you in finding the root of your problem and was helpful to you in your quest to find a remedy. Once again, when I started this thread, I was simply trying to "raise a red flag" by telling people about this chemical they use to sweeten their food and drinks. I can not and will not try to force people to change their ways. In the end we will all be held accountable for our own health and well being. My body is my temple and I choose to treat it as such. Thank you all for taking the time to read the posts on this thread and for posting your own thoughts as well.

I've been doing BFL for 9 months, so I try different things. If you really want something challenging, try Crazy 8's. You find a medium weight and do 1 rep, rest 15 secs, do 2 reps, rest 15 secs, do 3 reps, etc. until you get to 8. Then go backward with 7 reps, rest, 6 reps, rest, 5, etc. By the time you get through, your arms are like noodles. And you've done 64 total reps!!! Ouch......

try to follow it the best you can. Everything is down to science I suppose. Think about it? Your not eating for 7-10hrs. nor drinking your h20. Try to get that 6th meal in if you can. its good for your muscles and the single it gives to your tummy! Roe

Body for Life Forum Message by Shelley M. (7 posts) at 12:32 AM:
My 6th meal is a few hard boiled eggs (prepared beforehand and already in the fridge), a chicken breast, can of tuna, or a simple protein shake. Fast time (30-90 seconds), quick boost before your bed/fast time. Follow with BIG glass of H2O Good Luck.

I do alot of Cottage cheese with blueberries or raspberries mixed together. And chocolate protein powder with cherry yogurt mixed in. Or chocolate protein mixed with water and a piece of fruit.

I just had poached salmon and steamed broccoli. One of my favorite chicken options is baked in balsamic vinegar with garlic and a touch of olive oil (from the South Beach Diet book). I'm making sweet potato fries tonight - sprayed with a bit of Pam and shaken in garlic and dried rosemary before popped in the oven. But mostly, I've gotten to the point where I don't care what combo it is -- it's just fuel for the next couple of hours.

I'm am really commited to getting this weight off and looking fab in the spring so I have tried not to use too many of the recipies in it. What's your opinion on the book being for maintenance?

Body for Life Forum Message by sterling (4 posts) at 04:55 PM:
The efl book is great. Just watch your portion size. My favorites are Lemon Pepper Salmon (Mix ff mayo with lemon pepper and fresh lemon juice, spead on a portion of salmon and broil. YUM!) and a my own version of The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (Brown portion of chicken breast in 1 tsp olive oil turn off heat and add Franks Original Buffalo sauce. Mix together ff mayo, ff sourcream, diced green onion and crumbled blue cheese and spread portion on chicken. Forget the buns, the bread only takes away from the yummy flavors. In fact, I use vegis as my carb and dip them into the yummy blue cheese mixture and a litte buffalo sauce.

If you don't take caffiene, then yes it's going to kick your tail. Did you drink water post workout?

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (171 posts) at 10:26 AM:
The only significant active ingredient in here is the caffiene. So I'd say you had a caffiene reaction. Keep in mind that caffiene is a powerful stimulant. It's on the list of restricted suppliments for Olympic athletes. Dial back the dose, and take it a couple of times outside of workouts. Get used to what it feels like. These can be great tools, but be careful if you haven't tried them before.

Body for Life Forum Message by hurleyo (10 posts) at 10:30 AM:
I use kickstart everyday and love it. I am almost out though and dont like the stuff that they now sell to replace it. I drink tons of water though or it does make me nervous. I dont think I would use it again if I were you because it effects everyone differently. I hope you are feeling better.

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (22 posts) at 10:31 AM:
I took a caffeine pill once when I was a teenager and I never drank coffee before. Needless to say I was shaking, I couldn't vomit even though my stomach was in gut wrenching pain and I never recall every being so sick in my entire life. It was scary. Stay clear especially if it makes you feel like that! That's why they pull this stuff off shelf cause people die from stuff they are not used to!

Body for Life Forum Message by Jayla (6 posts) at 11:05 AM: Re: EAS Kick Start

Yeah I drank water after the workout, it was definately a reaction to kick start. :(

I talked to a friend that is a doctor the night after it happened, and he of course advised me to never take it again, since alot of the doses and stuff aren't regulated, and he explained to me what was happening to my body, with my reaction to the high caffiene does.  For my body it didn't work. I guess we all have to do what works for us.  He says during hockey season and different sporting seasons he sees alot of that type of reaction with people popping caffiene pills for performance and it can really screw your body up if you aren't used to it, ...heart palpatations, blood pressure sky rocketing, migrane, blured vision or worse, who knew that would happen with just caffiene, but lesson learnt. I'm gonna start reading nutrition labels better from now on. :D

Oh and I'm feeling much better today, thank you all for your replies. *hugs

Have a good week all! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (11 posts) at 07:10 PM:
This is a good question. Music is vital. I burn music from the library. The selection is uneven, but the price is good. Some libraries allow you to download books on tape straight from a web-site I hear. We don't have that yet, but I've bought language instruction and books from audible.com on ocassion. It's not cheap so limewire or bearshare might be better for those of us on a budget. Oh, and if you look on Amazon, there's a best of 2005 critics list for every catagory of music that you can listen to that's pretty interesting. Or, I really like to listen to the program all songs considered on npr and I guess they podcast it. I don't really know what that means. Does that mean I can download a program to my I-pod for free? Does anyone know?

Mike you crack me up!!!! OK...so I watched the show Sunday night and there is another one on Monday night (8pm-Discovery Health Channel). I did like the show, however (sorry to Pamela Peeke supporters) the show did nothing to better my opinion of PP. I think she is probably a great person and many women were helped by her book. I personally am not crazy about her. Not that she is BAD, just not my favorite. The show was great! If you get the chance to tune in and watch it tonight, I highly recommend it. Stef :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by bethkk (248 posts) at 08:56 AM:
I would agree with Hot Body, I read PP's book first and it helped me understand some of the weird hormonal things going on with me and how exercise and diet could help. That inspired me to get the original BFL book and I chose to follow the original program because PP's was too "wimpy" for me (a very experienced, although lapsed, "exerciser"). Thanks for letting us know about that show, Stef. I'm off to TIVO tonight's episode!

I get nervous for the Trackers who are posting personal stuff in their blogs that they wouldn't want certain people to read. You just never know whether (or when) they are seeing it. (I'm from DC, where we see confirmation processes up close and it's pummeled into our brains that ANYTHING can be dug up on people and made public at any time. Also, the writer of one of the notorious widely-read blogs dishing on members of Congress and their staff was formerly anonymous but later outed. These are "sticky" lessons! Especially if you're blogging about more personal stuff. You make a good point, Hot Body! I guess the most embarassing thing I've got on line are my before pictures. But although I'd be embarassed if certain people from my real life saw them, I'm not ashamed of them. And I'm sure I'd get past the embarassment pretty quick. I don't regret posting them. No, though I'm really new to it and haven't told anyone in "real life" about it yet...not sure if I will, though there is nothing to hide (yet!) I've never been too comfortable talking about my own fitness goals or accomplishments "in person" with my "real" people...even though I want to achieve a look to be envied, I really hate for people to look at me closely and "judge." I have one sister-in-law who CONSTANTLY comments on my looks...usually whether or not my current hair length makes me look younger or not, and my weight, as in "Do you want my jeans that no longer fit me cuz I lost weight and they would probably fit YOU" or "Do you want to buy this cellulite cream I am selling?" or when I bought some smaller sized jeans that ended up being too big, "I find that those run awfully BIG." OK, I went off on a BIT of a tangent, but it's stuff like that that makes me keep all this to myself in real life, so I like the idea of a blog! Eileen

This is the best way I know to reach people all over the country. My company, Team Blacktop. Inc., is putting the finishing touches on our cookbook(I Got Your Tailgate Party Right Here!). WE are looking for regional beers to put in the book along with the great recipes we collected from tailgaters at all the football games we went to! Thread: HELP! I've hit the plateau again.... (77 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (440 posts) at 08:50 AM: HELP! I've hit the plateau again....
I have had a perfect eating week! Surely I though I would lose weight! But no, I am again STUCK at 144.5 lbs. As my profile indicates, this happens EVERY time, and I usually end up slacking or quitting the challenge all together. I don't think the problem is my workouts....I got all my HIIT in this week AND a 20 mile run yesterday. I only lifted once though because of an injury. But I usually do all my lifting, too. I am getting SO discouraged because it IS hard for me to eat this way, and I have given up alcohol, too, which was hard, and I am not seeing results. I am considering changing the source of my carbs for a week just to see if that helps. I eat a lot of whole wheat wraps, hot cereal, and beans for my carbs, so I am thinking of getting all my carbs this week from fruits and vegtables like potatoes and corn, maybe its the starches that are killing me? Also considering doing HIIT everyday for a while, and eliminating low fat cheese in some EFL recipes... Do any of you have ideas that have helped you brake through the plateau? Opinions on my ideas? Anything??? I really had hoped to get under 140 for my race next month but just losing 5 lbs seems impossible. :( Thanks in advance for any suggestions.... :( Kelli

Those actually sound like really good ideas to help bust through that plateau. Someone who is on their 3rd Challenge shouldn't have too much fat to lose, but I understand your frustration. I've tried everything to help me break through plateaus and at least for me, the only thing that seems to work is time. I find that if I stick it out and keep going, eventually it finally breaks. I wish I knew why our bodies do that. The thing that helps me the most is to remember (for me anyway) that BFL is not a weightloss program. I plan on doing this for life, so I have no choice but to continue. If you know that this is normally when you bow out of a challenge, you've got to make a resolution to push through it this time. Try the things you've mentioned for a week or two and then let us know if it worked. I'll be interested to see. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Body for Life Forum Message by AirSpace (117 posts) at 09:09 AM:
I agree... sounds like you have some good ideas already... the only other tip I would add is to "zig-zag" your calories for a little while, alternating lower and higher calorie days that average out to your target calorie zone... sometimes that can help "trick" your body into letting go of the fat it's holding on to. Good Luck! Erin

Its been my expereince that losing weight while marathon training is actually tougher then you would think! A 20 miler can really take its toll on your body, in terms of calories needed to support it, recover from it, and also your water intake and balance. If you do change your carb intake just make sure it will not ibe in sacrifice for your running performance. Building muscle and distance training can be really difficult to do simultneously.

Thread: egg & yolk (107 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (399 posts) at 10:23 AM: egg & yolk
I noticed that a lot of people include one of the yolk when cooking eggs. Is this for taste or nutrients?

Body for Life Forum Message by Larry (159 posts) at 10:32 AM:

Pixy,

It's for both reasons. It makes it taste better and helps achieve the proper 40/40/20 protein to carb to fat ratio when combined with other foods.

Consider the following:

--------------------------------

Let's take a "just about perfect" sample meal of 5 egg whites, 1 whole egg and 1/2 cup (dry weight) of good old fashioned regular unprocessed "Mothers" oats (or stoned rolled oats).

The nutrient profile is:
-------------------------------------
5 egg whites
20 g protein
(about 68 total calories)

1/2 cup (dry) plain, old, regular Oats
5 g protein; 27 g complex carbs (no sugar); 3 g fat
(about 150 total calories)

1 whole egg:
6 g protein; 1 g. carb; 5 g fat
(about 77 total calories)

-------------------------------------
That leaves us with 295 calories:

124 from protein; 72 from fat; and 112 from complex carbs. It results in a ration of 42% protein to 37% "complex" carbs (no sugar) and 24% fat.

That's just about a perfect 40 / 40 / 20 BFL meal!

Keep in mind that the portion sizes I mentioned are good for a man my size and weight. Others may have to adjust it accordingly. Let me know if this answers your question.

Best regards,
Larry

I'm glad you posted this. I have been reading many nutrition websites lately and there is a great debate about whether or not the yolk is as bad for you as once believed. I was convinced that the yolk was the devil, but now I am not so sure. Anyone have more info?

Body for Life Forum Message by Larry (159 posts) at 11:31 AM:
JustDoIt,

For comprehensive info on egg yolks, check out the following link. It is very detailed.

By default the link yields data for 1 cup so don't flip out when you first go to the page.

Be sure to adjust the serving size.

There's a drop-down at the top of  page that allows you to adjust the serving size to 1 egg, etc.

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c201p.html

Don't be put off by the content of 1 food element. It's the combination that counts, as in the Eggs and Oats sample above.

Cheers!

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (209 posts) at 01:51 PM: Who's counting?
I'm going to be real honest hear when I tell you I'm not a logger. I don't log my workouts or calories, I find it to be very mind boggling and time consuming. I read that roughly only 7% of us who don't log actually suceed. So I guess I beat the odds, as I keep making progress. I'm curious how many of you go out of your way to make sure you count every calorie and keep a "balance" ratio of carbs to protein and fat? And for those of you who do, can you give me suggestions for how you do it. I know about fitday, anything else??

Body for Life Forum Message by pk-rn (57 posts) at 02:16 PM:
I don't count calories either. I do log everything I eat on the BFL journals that you can print from the website. I try to plan a day ahead of time what I will eat. I pick a carb, protien and a veggie in 2 meals. I don't get hung up with grams of protien, carbs, fat. I don't have time to be that specific. I find when I eat packaged foods like Lean Cuisines that I feel bloated afterwards unlike when I eat from the BFL authorized list. Sometimes, however, a Lean Cuisine is what it has to be...or I'd fall off the wagon! Anyway, whew I guess I'm a little gabby! Good Luck. Pk

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (70 posts) at 02:40 PM:
I think when you’re new to the program it helps to log everything so that you can solidify your routine. I made a simple exercise schedule that hangs on my fridge. I change up my routines but at least I know what I’m trying to improve for that day. Sunday: Cardio Abs Monday: Upper Back & Biceps Tuesday: Cardio Abs And so on…… I use to log in to FitDay when I first started but since I don’t deviate very much day to day with my diet I don’t log everyday. When I want to change things up a little I’ll see how it looks on FitDay first. Good luck.

Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (129 posts) at 03:44 PM:
i follow the same workout routine each time.. well I change some exercises when I'm there if some machine is broken or i want to mix it up. I keep track of the weights I use though because I would forget otherwise and be fumbling trying to find my intensities. I eat pretty much the same every day or slight variations thereof. If it is going to be different I just do the portion of carbs and protien thing. Don't count cals anymore. I did at the start to get a feel for it. I find it too time consuming now.

Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (59 posts) at 03:54 PM:
I don't log my workout or track my calories either. Never did and I successfully went from a size 8 to a size 2 in less than 12 weeks during my first challenge. For workout, I just have a good memory of what weight settings I did before. And, I find myself changing my routine quite often since I get bored easily. For food, I just went by the BFL and EFL books. I ate the suggested type of food and went by the palm/fist rule for determining portions.

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (738 posts) at 04:57 PM:
I plan and log all of my foods into fitday the night before and keep my caloric intake between 1150-1250 with 20% fat, 30% cabs and 50% protein. It only takes me about 2 minutes to plan the entire day. Once you get your staple foods in there it goes much faster. I do not log my workouts, but I go by the sheet from the website and change it every few weeks.

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (209 posts) at 05:23 PM:
thanks guys-you're all so awesome :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Ngo Excuses (89 posts) at 05:54 PM:
I log both workouts & food... I log workouts because I like to see my progression...for example when I started this challenge my 10 on cardio was a 4.0 now 9 weeks later it is a 5.7 on treadmill...so even if I plateau...i can see I'm getting stronger & faster... I log calories so if I plateau I know where to make adjustments... It is amazing how subtly things change over the course of the challenge... I also add just a 1-2 line about my workouts & eating...now looking back I laugh at what I thought was hard... Denise

I just took the anday sundae recipee from the eating for life book and pretty much put it in a quisinart gelatto machine. It turned out really well, but I've never done the anyday sundae so it might work just as well. This way I thought I could make a lot in advance and freeze it in little cups. Most people don't like to do that to gelatto, because because the freezer doesn't give it a soft freeze. But whatever. I had a lot of banannas to use up. Recipee: one cup milk two scoops chocolate protien powder four cups bananna slices One could add anything like mint extract, espresso, a couple dried cherries, or whatever I guess. I put it all in a blender and then poured it into my quisinart gelatto maker. That makes four servings I'm freezing in little tupperwear cups.

sixpack...HIIT Progress shouldn't be measured by miles travelled, but rather the intensity of exercise during the 20 minutes. Yes, you will probably find the milage increase as you up intensity each session, but there are too many variables to be able to say how much faster you'd have to go to get 3 miles...and it's not necessary anyway. Rate your workouts on intensity, not distance travelled :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (440 posts) at 09:30 AM:
I agree with Ryan, but just FYI I run 2.8 miles in 20 min. My speeds are as follows: 2 min at 6.5 mph 2 min 8.0 1 min 9.9 2 min 7.3 2 min 8.3 1 min 9.3 2 min 7.3 2 min 8.3 1 min 9.3 3 min 8.0 1 min 9.0 1 min 10.0 I change something each time to go a little farther. When I reach 3 miles, I will continue to do that. You can ALWAYS get faster. 3 miles isn't a magical #, but it is a nice round # for a goal. While I agree that you should measure your runs by INTENSITY, trying to ogo farther each time really motivates me to hang in there and RUN FASTER, which does increase my intensity. So if 3 miles as a goal works for you keep your eye on that time! Kelli

The advice I've followed when I experience DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is to go into active recovery, which is doing my routine at 50% of my normal load and not take the sets to muscular failure. This helps to restore full movement in the muscle, removes the lactic acid, and keeps the muscles moving towards repair and growth. I've found that by doing this, my muscles aren't nearly as sore as skipping that workout.

Body for Life Forum Message by Northern Belle (105 posts) at 07:51 PM:
Ditto to that. Moderate active recovery is the best thing for general muscle soreness. Just make sure it's not an injury.

Anybody else training for a marathon while doing a challenge? I'm balancing the workouts by adding a slow run after my 3 HIIT on the treadmill and doing a long run outside on my day off. There is no exercise day off. But so far, it is OK. I would not have done this on my first challenge, but now that I have it down I feel like I can tweak enough to add the running. Someone posted a site that had a very conservative running schedule and it seems like it will work with the BFL workouts. I don't want to substitute one for the other because I like the balance of toned upper body and lower body that you get with BFL. Let me know how YOU do it!

Like you, I definitely don't want to stop the weight training, but I don't want to burn out, either. I'm thinking I'll pick one HIIT day and do long mileage instead, and have one day where I do an easy walk after a weight workout. I'm hoping there are people here on tracker who can guide us on the best way to do this. I'm also worried about the nutrition part of it!

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (112 posts) at 11:21 PM:
Beth, I think the nutrition is probably perfect already. If you go on a very long (over an hour) run or walk, then maybe you will need a bar or a snack. But I find I do not need it. I am hungry an hour or so after my workout and it is important to have it planned before I go. That way I won't graze when I get hungry. I think we'll get some great advice from the seasoned tracker runners! good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by Runningsouthernstyle (47 posts) at 11:54 PM:
I think that reagiesmom is a wealth of information on this stuff. She does this while marathon training, hopefully she will chime in. I too and doin the 1/2 marathon and refuse to give up the weights. I do 1 run as an interval run, one as a long run, and 1 I just run for a set amount of time, usually 45 minutes. That is my cardio other than the ocassional bike ride. But I do find that after about an hour of running I am hungry. But it hasnt been a real issue yet. Hope this helps somewhat......

Thanks for helping me get my LBW where I want it to be. Now I feel like I am actually making a difference:) Thank you - Thank you - Thank you

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (35 posts) at 07:43 PM: "calories burned"

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (35 posts) at 07:44 PM:
Oops, sorry. How accurate is the "calories burned" read out on cardio equipment? The other day, after my 20min HIIT, the readout told me I had burned 270 calories! That's a lot. The Hussman site, as well as BFL says not to trust that readout. But why? I'd like to know the science behind it and just how accurate or inaccurate it really is. What do you think?

Body for Life Forum Message by Northern Belle (105 posts) at 07:49 PM:
I think the readout follows a mathematical formula, based on weight, speed and time. 3.0 mph burns X number of calories per minute at X weight. These are not necessarily accurate. I use the readout as a guide; example if I can burn 200 cal in X minutes, can I up that number the next time around. Use it as a tool, not as gospel.

Body for Life Forum Message by 4sweetums (15 posts) at 07:50 PM:
My opinion is not all that scientific...but some cardio equipment (like my stationary bike here at home) has a calorie read out, however it doesn't ask for age, height, weight, sex...etc. That makes a huge difference in how many calories are being burned!! Or at least that is what I have always thought...Also, I think one reason BFL says to not trust the calorie read out is because the majority of your calories are burned during the hour after working out w/ cardio & weights. That is the reason it is best to wait an hour or so before eating anything. Hope this helps a little...I am anxious to see some of the other responses as well.

Body for Life Forum Message by txsugar (14 posts) at 09:58 PM:
Up until last week I would wear a polar heart rate monitor that calculates calories spent(my battery died, i want to cry). The cardio equipment at my gym usually reads twice as many cals more than my monitor, quite disappointing i know! 4sweetums is right though, a large sum of the calories you burn are after the workout, if you are doing HIIT the right way. If you can afford it, the heart rate monitor is a definitely worth buying. I'm surprised every time by how many calories I burn during weight training. If you decide to buy, they sell different Polar HR models, make sure you buy the one that calculates calories! Hope this helps.

YES!!! I'm so excited...I've been doing 25 modified push-ups first thing every morning since Jan. 2 and this morning I did 13 regular style push-ups and finished with modified style. This is a MAJOR accomplishment for me -when I started on Jan. 2 I could NOT finish one complete regular push up, they had to be modified!!! One of my three goals for this challenge is to be able to complete 20 regular push ups...and only three weeks in, I'm half way there. I agree with Young Guns...I don't think adding push ups is overtraining -on the contrary, it has helped me with upping my weights for UBWO's (although I did have a tough week 1 with soreness!!)

If you are more concerned about how it will look in the photos (definition) try trimming the hair with the #1 attachement of a pair of electric clippers (or if the hair is super curly, maybe a #2). It won't be smmoth to lie next to in bed, but it won't be a prickly as stubble either. And I have found that (depending on the guy and the hair) that it does'nt really show up that much in the photos. I used a #1 clipper cut in my 12 week photo, and it's almost as smooth looking as a razor cut.

Actually, I saw a doctor a long time ago about that pain and other in my wrist and foot. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. I attribute the fact that my arthritis symptoms disappeared to weight lifting. When I take time off, the symptoms do reappear. I was already feeling some in the sternum and figured it was just the arthritis cropping up. But then I worked out and had that incredible pain, starting probably 5-6 hours after my workout and lasting at an intense level for maybe 10-12 hours then it started to subside. Today I feel better, still feel it a little bit, but it now feels more like the normal soreness of a workout. Funny thing is that the first week of the challenge, I had this problem on Monday (my first ubwo). I did the same routine on Friday and was fine. then a week went by before working it again and had the problem again. So strange..... So, I guess I should still go see the doc, or no??? Phatty - I read some info on that...yes, it kind of describes the feeling, although I had no pain radiating down my arm - the pain was in my middle chest area.

Hi gang! Often I hear people express their frustration with trying to stay on track with Body-for-Life or another fitness program they have attempted. Sometimes they are tempted to call it quits and just take it easy... And then there are those who keep putting off starting an exercise program until the 'time is right'... To those folks I just want you to think about a few things... Step back and take a look at your life... Are you willing to live the rest of your life fat and out of shape? How are you going to feel in the elder years of your life when you realize that you never achieved one of the biggest dreams you ever had - to finally live up to the potential that has been crying to be realized for oh so long... Is that OK? Is it alright to let all those naysayers who have doubted you win? Are people going to remember you as just another dreamer who never had the class and character to pursue his dreams with courage and determination? Are you willing to sign up for a lifetime of regret by letting your body go? We both know the answer... Absolutely not!!! So then it's inevitable... At some point you MUST find a way to come to terms with any issues that have kept you from FINALLY achieving your dreams. It is no longer a matter of IF but WHEN it will come to fruition... So now I ask you to treat your Body-for-Life program as not only a fitness challenge but as your destiny... That regardless of any setbacks or frustrations you may encounter that you are no longer going to settle for being less than your best. Let the rest of the world wallow in mediocrity and living day-to-day in regret. It's time for you to show what you are made of...to once and for all let the athlete within you emerge... Of course, when you dare to commit to excellence there will be many who will tell you that you don't need to be in that good of shape and that you are fine as you are. But I dare you... Go ahead and try to settle for living by others' lower standards. I dare ya! The truth is you can't... You wouldn't be reading this if you were willing to settle for a life of unfulfilled dreams... So just be grateful that God has blessed you with the desire to excel... Put another log on the fire and let your passion burn! Get in the gym and take on life full force. You're going to have a great BFL challenge!!! Of course, there are no guarantees in life (You want a guarantee? Then buy a toaster!!! Yuk! Yuk!)... But I will guarantee you this... Give it your all for 12 weeks...the exercise...the food and nutrition plan... Do your absolute best! I guarantee that you won't have one ounce of regret... In fact, you just may finally see the REAL and glorious you coming to life...after so many years of lying dormant. Instead of asking "How can I do this?" you'll be asking the much more empowering question "How can I NOT do this?!!!" Conversely, if you continue to put it off I can also guarantee you'll have a ton of regret!!! Knowing that at some point you are going to have to rebuild your body in order to live the life you dream of I say let's get going NOW!!! You're lucky to have found such a great and effective program like Body-for-Life. With your passion and commitment and BFL you are going to be so jazzed after 12 weeks! You'll finally be excited about your life and where it's going... That after all these years you are finally becoming the person you always wanted to be... It's inevitable... Jim

Actually, this is C1 and I'm doing more preparing for C2 then following the program at this moment. I'm trying to complete my home gym, my C2 goals together, my foods ready, and my energy set for an explosive C2 to start on Jan. 23. I will be way more prepared for C2 then I was for C1. I'm almost ready to rock! -Ed-

Crone - it might help to post something about standings again, soon. People forget and get busy and sometimes it is just a matter of putting out posts and yes, kind of bugging people, until you get them to report their stats. To anyone who is on a team If the captains are having difficulty getting info from the team members, it holds the whole challenge up. If you are on a team, hold up your end of the bargain!!! You are part of a team and accountable to your team members, your captain and even to the other teams! Be sure to get your info to your captain on time and Crone will be able to post standings - she can't do it without your input!!!

Thread: CONTENT of your CHARACTER....A Tribute to Mr. King (127 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by BIG BULL (917 posts) at 08:32 AM: CONTENT of your CHARACTER....A Tribute to Mr. King
I know this "Off-topic," but I felt as it should have its place on the main forum since today is a day that we remember a great American.  This may not be the place for "political" type comments and if you feel that way, I understand.  Bear with me on this one. I have a BFL connection, as remote as it might be.

As a very young boy in the 1960's living in the near west suburb of Oak Park outside of Chicago, I don't remember the political and cultural landscape very well.  I grew up in a family that didn't tolerate racial bigotry.  Yet I found myself a part of a culture that knew plenty of fear.  I do remember my parents feeling very scared when Cicero was burning after Dr. King's life was cut short.  I do remember going with my parents and grandparents to the "breadbasket" of downtown Chicago and visiting an all-black church and how the people were so full of love, energy and kindess.  I do remember whenever we traveled in these parts, that my parents would tell us kids to "lock your car doors" while the car was still moving!  Needless to say, I was conflicted as a youngster, yet wanting to understand "why people had to have such fear and hatred."

I have always considered Martin Luther King one of my heroes.  As a believer, I feel a certain kinship of faith.  As a man, I feel deep respect of his convictions.  As a human being, I have a deep admiration of his passion!  He spoke with the man's tongue, but if ever a man has moved me in a deep and profound way, as if God Himself were speaking, Dr. King would be at the top of the list.

How does this tie in to Body-for-Life???  For me it does, because in my pursuit of health and wellness, I find myself in a certain pursuit of "truth."   Thoreau called it "living life deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life." Living with purpose..."to live deep, sucking the marrow out of life." He further stated in Walden, "I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary."  If I am to truly grow as a human being, I must use this BFL experience to grow in mind, body and spirit.  This journey has brought many of us full circle in our lives and has deepened and enriched our lives in ways we never anticipated.  For me this journey began in my mind, as I confronted my reality.  My first challenge a year ago was an assault of best health on my body.  As I journeyed deeper into my first challenge, I began to realize more and more that this would ultimately be a war with my fickle spirit.

So on this day, I remember a man, Dr. King, who lived life deliberately and faced life down.  Ultimately, it cost him his life.  But when he lived...he truly LIVED!
Long live Dr. King and his message of "judging a man by the content of his character."  May we Trackers be greater men and women of character and greater Americans as the result of our pursuit of truth in mind, body and spirit.

The past 2 weeks have been "trying" to say the least.(Thats why I havent been very active on here) My son was hit by a car(hes OK, but gunna be scarred pretty bad), my lil guy Rocky has made it thru 2 more episodes of heart failure and Im runnin on basically NO sleep. For the 1st time since August-I started having doubts about myself and my program. Then, I get a call from SHKELLY or KANA and it reminds me how much BFL has changed my life, and what FANTASTIC friends I have met thru BFL. It also reminded me how important BFL and this lifestyle is to me, my health and my sanity. An extra special Thanks to KANA for the call this morning (and yes, Im going to call you back-I promise!). WOW Dana - I hope he is okay. I had a scary episode on 12/23. A BIG Lincoln Navigator, barreled my shopping cart to the ground and the cart hit me, slamming me to the ground in the crosswalk of Walmart. I was scared to death, I thought the car was not going to stop and would run over me as well, but it was a very close call. My left arm and shoulder were slammed to the ground and I am waiting to see what the MRI shows. It has put a huge damper on my UBWO and made me very irritated that the last few weeks of my first challenge were so "challenging". But this is for life and I will get through whatever it takes to keep making progress. Hope your son is doing well and keep up the good work. Hi everyone! I was doing great last week and all of the sudden had some terrible pain in my teeth. I went to the dentist on friday and she said I would have to have three teeth pulled out. I was able to get in to see the oral surgeon that same morning and had it done. All weekend I was unable to workout or even eat right. I am back on track this week but am still having a hard time eating regular food. Has anyone had this type of thing happen before? Does anyone have any advise? I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Hope everyone has a great and successfull day. Stuart

Thread: Need help with Goals (88 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (246 posts) at 10:57 AM: Need help with Goals
I had no idea how hard it would be to actually sit down and come up with goals. At the Expo, someone said (I forgot who) that it's really important to make your goals and tell the world about them so that everyone will call you on it and help keep you in line.

Well, since I can't start working out yet. I decided now is a good time to work on some prep work, like goals, but I'm getting totally frustrated.

I know I want to lower my BF%, gain muscle and lose weight  - but how do you put a number on that? What's attainable? What's too easy? What's too far out and frustrating? What sort of time frame? A Challenge? A Year?

I now realize that I can't succeed if I don't know where I'm going, but I can't figure out where I want to go. Am I over thinking this?  Someone help me!!!  How did you all come up with your goals?

Laurie

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1165 posts) at 11:01 AM:
I had the same questions. I just picked a number. I went to a site and here's what i use for body fat...(http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php) and as long as this is the one I use all the time it's good. Every site is different, but this one works for me. As far as other goals, I have a blog that I put weekly goals on them as far as what part I want to improve or concentrate on more for the week. I found that making smaller goals worked better for me. So yes, you can overthink it, but start by making "baby steps" in your goals then it will get you started and you can broaden your goals. Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (738 posts) at 11:03 AM:
Laurie It all depends on what you want to achieve. For example....the normal BF% for a woman is 20%, but abs should start to show at around 15%. Do you want to just be normal/healthy? If so..set your BF goal at 20%. If you want to see some abs..set your goal somewhere between 13-15%. The pounds on the scale aren't nearly as important as your measurements, but many people can't keep that number on the scale out of their mind (myself included). If you are at 5'3...try setting your goal somewhere between 130-140 pounds. Maybe have a clothes size as a goal? Size 8? These are only suggestions, and your goals will more than likely change over time as you see your results, you will want MORE! I have a set of overall goals, and I set mini-goals because I know this is going to take some time for me to reach my ultimate goal. Hope this helps a bit. Jennifer

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (440 posts) at 11:04 AM:
I set a BIG goal for the end of a challenge, then several tiny goals for in the meantime. My tiny goals help me achieve the big one. For example: Big Goal: Lose 10 lbs Tiny goals: Stop drinking beer, cook at home instead of ordering out, do all my workouts. Then you have something you can feel good about EVERY day.

Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (246 posts) at 11:14 AM:
This is great info! Keep it coming! Jennifer, The abs thing showing - that would be awesome! I'm getting closer to a number now - thank you! Lori, I'm such an idiot! I've never noticed you have a blog and you're such an inspiration for me. I will be a regular reader from now on! I like the weekly/tiny goals and big goal too, that'll help keep me going, cause 15% BF is a looooong ways away. Laurie

Another tip...Find a transformation champion whose after photo you aspire to, has a similar start weight/shape to you etc, and model your goals on what they achieved. I've got a pic of Jamie Brunner taped to the inside cover of my training diary just for inspiration :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (613 posts) at 01:17 PM:
Laurie, I too had all the same questions for myself. I found it challenging to set goals, especially since it would mean my entering "foreign territory"! So, in my last Challenge, I set out to lose an average of 2 pounds per week (which is widely accepted as healthy loss). I also decided that I didn't want to lose lean mass, so I backed into the equation to determine my ending BF%. I was quite pleased with the results, especially since I ended up weighing less than I had for over a decade! Still, I felt I was hesitant with my goals, like being XXX pounds was "good enough." So, for this next Challenge, I totally ditched "good enough" and decided to go for it. Like Ryan suggested, I found a couple of women whose shape I aspired to have. I found out their numbers and modeled my goals on that. And it's no longer "foreign territory" for me, because I am stating my goals in the present - not future - tense.

Hello Team #4. It’s Monday morning and I need your stats for week 2. I have had a suggestion from a team member to open a thread to keep the team informed. It is also a place for you to share your success with the team any information you might want to share. This is all voluntary so share what you would like. News for week 2: Currently we are in 8th place but I'm sure that will change shortly. Last week all participating members did an outstanding job in points and are on the path to achieving their goals. Let’s make all we can out of Week 3 and keep up the good work. We lost a member who unfortunately is having an unforeseen problem that is stopping them from participating. My thoughts are with you. We have been assigned another member and I will invite this new member to post to this tread to introduce themselves. Suggestion are welcome.

OK! I guess I will go first. I am really excited about my new lifestyle. I feel stronger and have more energy then I have for years. My first week of the Mini Challenge did not go as good as I wished I slipped on my diet and missed a workout. But enough about that -- because this second week I kicked butt. All workouts completed with 10s. Good eats except for of course my free day. I lost 2 lbs this week which is more then I have lost for a while. I just started carb cycling this week which may have help kick start my weight loss again. I purchased an Omron BF analyzer this week and it measures about the same BF% as my calipers and measurement calculations. All of the methods vary only slightly from each other. Hummm… I might be getting a little overly obsessed BF. Well, I’ll add something later if I think of it. Have a great BFL week.

Hi all...I am excited about this mini challenge because I really need it! I did a lot of unhealthy eating over the holidays, and am ready to get back on track. The first week of the challenge was good for me...though last week I slipped up on diet once. Otherwise good though. I am down 4 lbs. since starting! Also getting in all my water, which is hard for me. The accountability is really helping :)

Not too shabby!
I just need to remain focused.

Comparing Challenge #1, Week #1 to Challenge #2, Week #2, NormRebs started with a lean bodyweight of 168.0 lbs and 72.0 lbs of bodyfat. If NormRebs's measurements are accurate, he currently has a lean bodyweight of 189.5 lbs and 37.5 lbs of bodyfat. This is a change of 21.5 lbs of muscle and 34.5 lbs of bodyfat if the measurements are correct. These figures are only as good as the accuracy of the weight and bodyfat measurements taken.

Body for Life Forum Message by scrappinmichelle (37 posts) at 12:52 PM: Can someone explain this to me?
I usually don't weigh myself until Mondays on this Challenge (only my third week) but decided to before doing cardio on Saturday. And then I weighed myself again this morning and I'm up 4 pounds since Saturday. I don't know what happenend with my weight. I had a perfect week last week including eating 6 small meals every day but Monday (only 5), hit my 10s and increased my weights on Mon, Wed, Fri, hit my 10s on cardio days, and drank at least 1 gallon of water every day. I did take a free day yesterday. I had a small portion of a lot of foods I shouldn't eat but by all means did not overeat or overindulge - did eat foods high in sodium but still drank a gallon of water. I don't know why it's +4 lbs after Sunday. Can someone explain this to me?

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (34 posts) at 01:04 PM:
Your free day has probably resulted in you gaining a bit of water retention through not being on the diet. It's happened to me before, I definitely wouldn't worry about it as long as you are following the program strictly, just carry on as normal. My advice...never weigh on a Monday again :) In fact, forget scales altogether and just compare Week 1 photos with Week 4 when you get there. That's a better way of gauging your progress and will stop negative thinking.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (613 posts) at 01:06 PM:
Many Trackers, myself included, step on the scales the morning of their Free Day. That might help you get a more accurate reading of the results of your hard work in the previous 6 days.

Body for Life Forum Message by AngRoCamp (155 posts) at 01:07 PM:
I agree with Ryan! No Monday morning weigh-ins :) I make it a point to NEVER weigh-in the day after free day, just in case I did a bit of damage. It's almost certainly just water weight gain because you'd have to have a massive amount of calories to actually put on pounds of fat weight (I can't remember the actual number) so don't stress about it, and just stick with the program!! If you want to keep doing weekly weigh-ins, a lot of people do it Sunday morning before having any of their free food. Keep up the good work! Ang

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (22 posts) at 01:23 PM:
Maybe it's your menstral cycle that's to blame??? Maybe you didn't pee out all the fluid you drank when you weighed yourself 1 liter = 2.2 lbs. 1 gallon is approx 4 liters (a little less) That's why it's best to weigh yourself 1st thing in the morning before your free day and every week the same day.

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (22 posts) at 01:25 PM:
OOOh and get rid of the scale. I weight myself at my mother's otherwise I would give up before I even started. Weight flucuates too much during the day.

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1086 posts) at 04:03 PM:
Sodium leads to serious water retention. Water can equal weight. It'll come off quick, but something to keep in mind all the time when making and eating foods, not just free day. Yours in Health Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (20 posts) at 05:07 PM:
I agree, never get on the scale after free day unless it's to laugh at how much temporary weight you can gain in one day. Me? I'm too freaked out about gains to laugh so I never weigh myself for at least 2-3 days after free day. Think of all the carbs you ate, the glycogen that comes with those carbs, and the water molecules that attach themselves to the glyogen, and there is probably most of your added weight. Remember, you have to consume an excess of 3,500 cals to gain a pound. While that isn't impossible, it certainly isn't all that easy, either. Chin up! By the end of the week you'll be seeing those losses again. Heather p.s. I have had gains of up to 5lbs after free day, all to be gone by Thursday.

Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (283 posts) at 11:40 PM:
Stay OFF the scale!! More than once per week is TOO much! It is an evil little bastard! (pardon my french) Like they said above, do it only in the morning before you do your free day. It is the most accurate. Besides, nothing can mess with your motivation more than a darn scale! xoxo karen

Thread: oh my gosh, I'm freaking out (109 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Daaang Girl (79 posts) at 05:15 PM: oh my gosh, I'm freaking out
I just went to the doc today for a normal visit to have my airhead pills renewed (ADD meds). He is concerned about my blood pressure (it's been elevated for the past few visits but I never thought anything about it)so he has the nurse to an ECG. I'm 31 and he has to do an ECG... holy crap. OK so I calm down and they do the test. He tells me that there could be a problem, but it could also just be the way my heart is. Nice. Just vague enough to scare the living crud out of me. I asked for a copy of the ECG because I am a medical geek and thought it would be fun to take it to class (yeah, kinda like a sho-and-tell thing). It has some stuff on the top of it that I don't like at ALL. Words like "infarction" and "LVH". Neither of these words put me at ease one little bit. They could be on the smaller scale of heart problems (I hope), but they sure don't look like they're harmless. In fact, they scare me even more. He wanted to put me on high blood pressure meds, but I asked him to hold off until my next appointment in 3 weeks to see if I can get it down on my own. I am 31 years old (for a few more weeks anyways). I am too young to be on blood pressure meds!! I may have something wrong with my heart because of high blood pressure. Oh my gosh...I don't care how "minor" that something is! It's SCARY!!! Well, sorry for the long post. I just had to share that the time has passed for me to be "oh, I want to look good but I'm just so busy I'll put it off". OK, wake up call. I have 3 weeks to get my blood pressure down before I am on blood pressure meds at 32. He's going to do some blood tests and maybe a sonogram or something (I was pretty dumbfounded by then. That doesn't really soudn right but, I figured I'd find out what he wanted in 3 weeks). I hope that nothing is wrong. I hope that IF something IS wrong, it's very small, and it can be reversed. Screw this, it's on. I am NOT heading down the road of taking pills to keep myself healthy.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (159 posts) at 05:24 PM:
Good attitude to take! You and I are about the same age, so I understand what it's like when the Doctor starts talking about heart disease. I have faith in you and your ability to get it down. Besides, your doctor DOES know you're married to a Marine right? That can raise your blood pressure right there ;) (a little joke from your friendly neighborhood Corpsman ;) Tom

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1086 posts) at 07:15 PM:
Wow. That's a bit of stuff on the plate. Agreed that most of what doc may be telling you is about preventative action. Let's hope so. For me, blood pressure is a fixation , lol- one of those internal goals I'm working on. A little story.... First time I saw new family doctor upon being released from the hospital(brain aneurysm- ruptured; I took a BP reading of 160/100 in his office, lol) Anyway, we didn't do the meds but I came back 3 months later with about 15 readings which were a better average. Since BFL, blood pressure is consistantly coming down- the averages- still get occaisional high readings ) Long story- point is that you can exert control over these things, and I have no doubt you will :) Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (259 posts) at 07:25 PM:
I wouldn't sweat the EKG at all, at least not yet. If he thought there was anything that was ominous--that could put you in immediate danger--you wouldn't have gone back to school--you would have gone straight to the hospital, maybe even by ambulance. I'm guessing that he might be hearing something a bit odd in a valve, which is not an uncommon problem in women. Go read this link and see if it all sounds familiar. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/articles/11117-5.asp If it does, not to worry. Oh, one last thing. You have not done any damage to your heart by the high blood pressure. However, you certainly increase your risk for stroke, kidney damage and other fun things if you don't get it under control.

So here I am starting Challenge #2 today, more ready than ever!  Just so you know, my local gym is hosting their own "Biggest Loser" contest, so I need all of your support. The contest officially started today and will end April 10th. If I lose 20lbs in bodyweight in 12 weeks, I will earn 3 free months of membership!  They have yet to determine what the "Biggest Loser" will win.  But hey I have nothing to lose but 20lbs or more, so why not!  Oh yeah we are also competing as teams and everyone weighs in every two weeks.  Just knowing the gym people will weigh me, will keep me in line.  Wish me luck... and just so you know, I am eager to support all of you as well!
Peace

Thread: Where do desserts come in?? (54 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Art (3 posts) at 07:15 PM: Where do desserts come in??
I'm on my second week of BFL, and what I've missed most so far is having something sweet to eat after meal 5 (dinner, basically). I know there are dessert recipes on the BFL website, but when can we eat those? Do they count as one of our meals? Is there something I could add to a meal that doesn't count for many calories but is still dessert-like?

Body for Life Forum Message by 4sweetums (15 posts) at 07:22 PM:
I wondered the same thing and then after I bought the Eating for Life book I think I found my answer. The desserts in that book have a high amount of protein in each...and a certain amount of carbs. I have been eating a dessert out of the EFL book as one of my mid-meals. (But NOT directly on top of supper) Just a thought, but like you I don't know that is exactly right. Someone PLEASE correct me if I am going about the desserts the wrong way...because this is only what I could come up with.

Body for Life Forum Message by rbsamy (401 posts) at 07:31 PM:
YOu can use one of the dessert listed in the EFL but still wait the 2-3 hours and have that as your last meal of the day. I use alot of different shakes for my last meal. I know alot of people like the different protein pudding options. I do not like pudding but they would be a real easy option. The strawberry cheesecake and pumpkin cheesecakes are AWESOME highly recommend try those. Along with the berry parfait and crepes and banana foster. Okay, I am getting hungry now. Hope that helps.

so you think just do the EFL desserts as the last meal of the day and not between b.fast and lunch or lunch and dinner? The pumpkin pie is sooooo yummy!! I like it so much better than regular pumpkin pie!

Body for Life Forum Message by Oherra (1 posts) at 09:56 PM: Hi everyone!
I just wanted to say hi! I heard about this forum from a few posts on Bodybuilding.com. I am planning to start BFL on Monday Jan 23rd. I'm an identical twin except that I have always been known as the chunky or hefty one. I grew up being identified by my weight and I got to a point where I didn't care. Once I entered college I lived on fast food and ballooned to a shocking 249.999 LBS (I refuse to say 250)! I saw photos of myself and absolutely hated it so I decided to change. Through a mix of crash dieting, a failed attempt at Atkins, and simply getting off the couch I've managed to cut down to 214lbs. I look and feel better, but I KNOW I could do better. I've always allowed not having the space in my tiny apartment for gym equipment to be my excuse for not going the extra mile and dropping below 200lbs. I could have joined a gym but the rural town I live in hasn't had one until now.... a brand new 24 hour Anytime Fitness has opened up literally less than a 4 minute drive from my apartment. So much for excuses... I was one of the first persons to go sign up for a membership. I bought the BFL book today and have been reading it and I am hoping to get started on Monday. My goal is to loose at least 20lbs, to reshape my body and find my currently nonexistent upper body strength, and most of all, to no longer be identified by my weight!

Thread: Do you want to be happy 365 days a year? (87 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1191 posts) at 12:03 PM: Do you want to be happy 365 days a year?
Do you want to be happy 365 days out of the year or do you just want to be happy only a few days out of the year? That is the question. This question stems from a minor mental breakdown and revelation I had yesterday. I had a minor little freak out in a dressing room and my mom brought something to my attention after it. So I thought I would share this with you guys and possibly hear your personal views on the question. My mom mentioned that I should have goals and stuff but not just centered around a competitors figure. Because it seems that it has been ruining any happiness with my success right now. And my accomplishments so far. She was so right. So, I am taking it slow and have my goal of being happy with my body 365 days a year! I don't want to strive to look good for just one day. I want it all the time. If I step out onto a stage one day that will just be icing on the cake. If I don't then I got a great body to be proud of along the way. But right now I am doing this for me, not anything or anyone else. To be happy in the body I am building for me and my personal best. To be happy with it 365 days a year. Just curious how you guys feel? I thought it was an interesting question because everyone wonders what happens after 12 weeks..... Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by Lese (14 posts) at 12:21 PM:
I agree. I also want something that I can maintain. I basically go by the EFL cookbook. It is a little less strick than the BFL book but it is what keeps me going. I was able to complete this challenge and feel really good about it. I did a challenge once before. I had great results but due to the very strick food I was eating I quit after 7 weeks. I would rather be able to make it a lifestyle than to have the show figure that only lasts for one day! Lisa

Oh yes I agree 100%! We can get so wrapped up in the thing we want so badly and all it does is make us depressed and feel desperate for it. You can't wait to be happy WHEN you get there. You must be happy NOW. Because WHEN you get there you won't REALLY be there will you? We always have things we want to improve upon, to change, to get better at, we create new goals. So, I think it's vital to our wellbeing to find that inner peace and live it NOW, every day if you can, even if you find it for just a minute. And in the end it will only help you in your efforts and your goals. It's more positive and uplifting and time goes by so fast, let's not waste time being down on ourselves. Think of Julie and don't waste a precious moment being unhappy if it's just a matter of changing your mindset. xoxoxo

This is a good idea. An old roomate of mine went on some crazy fast and when she was comming off of it she could only eat root vegetables so she would buy like parsnips, sweet potato, and ruttebaga, chip them up really thin, cover them in sea salt, wash it off, and then bake them on a cookie tray. They rocked. Think I'll make those, pack some in a baggie, add two boiled eggs and call it a midmeal.

I see in the EFL book that two boiled eggs and an orange piece is a mid meal. Or two eggs and a red, yellow, or green pepper piece. Or cottage cheese, yogurt, caned lichee, and pineapple or some other canned or fresh fruit. Apple and light string cheese or maybe an apple and that laughing cow cheese that comes in foil triangles?

Oh wow- I am also struggling with meal ideas (thx sparkleberry) Everything so far is so helpful. Just a lil encouragement- PLEASE KEEP THE IDEAS COMING. the concept of small balanced meals is really beyond me. from the ideas listed above, i think im doing ok with the meals- i just need to make sure i eat enough times for the day.

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (420 posts) at 11:55 PM:
tuna and carrot sticks (and sometimes I'll cut up a whole wheat pita and bake it til it tastes like a chip, but usually i just eat this with an apple) Not to be picky here, but peanut butter is not considered a protein. So if you have to have it, be sure to add a protein to complete the meal...

Thread: chicken salad four ways (13 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (11 posts) at 06:35 PM: chicken salad four ways
I got these suggested ways to make chicken salad from real simple magazine. 1.Add green apple and watercress to chicken with light mayo 2. Add curry powder and some mango chutney to chicken 3. Add cherry tomatoes and red onion with light mayo 4. Add pesto to light mayo and combine with chicken. Use a whole wheat tortilla for a wrap, or add lettuce for a salad. Anyone have some really good lunch ideas. I have some caned crab and salmon. I guess you could just add lemon and light mayo. Or bay spice and light mayo to the crab?

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (11 posts) at 06:55 PM: Tea
Anyone have suggestions for tea drinkers? I just put a couple of bags into my nalgene bottle on my way to school and then fill it up with hot or cold water as the day goes on. Licorice root is nice because it's naturally sweet. Mint is good. And then this week I bought chocolate tea. It doesn't really taste like chocolate, but I add a little splenda to it at night to take the edge off. I also made lemonade by squeezing fresh lemons and adding splenda to a big pitcher all these activities made me feel really domestic and old, but I ended up drinking a lot more water than usual.

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (209 posts) at 07:02 PM:
I really LOVE Aveda's tea. It also contains licorice root, so it's naturally sweet and so tasty. It has a mix of lavender, chamomile, mint, licorice and some other good stuff. Licorice root is really good for your kidneys, so I go to town on this stuff :)

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (11 posts) at 10:04 PM: golden pancake variations
These seem obvious, but I just made them and they look so good. I used the golden pancake recipee, but then added bananna and cinimon to the batter. In another one I added a little pear and frozen blueberries. When you add the fruit they're a little harder to cook and they look slightly revolting, but Im sure they're going to be good. I made them in advance and I plan to just microwave them in the morning. If I have time I might put some splenda/lemon syrup on them.
