I'm doing DB exercises that don't aggravate an old shoulder injury.
DB flyes
one arm rows
bentover raises with very light weights
skull crushers
No overhead raises at all!No side raises either.

Hi.. I have carpal tunnel in both wrist. In fact I had the surgery on my right hand about 5 years ago. My right hand does get weak and what I found that helps in using a brace and I have my hands and arms massaged.Sometimes I just get some lotion and massage them myself. I go to a physical therapist for hands and arms. She told me even if you have carpal tunnel surgery it can come back again..sometimes several times. Everyone has different symptoms. Mine were numbness in fingers and now I have pain in my thumb joint. Makes it hard to hold heavy weights. When it hurts the most I just massage it for a while. It seems to help. You can go to a neurologist to get a nerve conduction study to see if you have it. They hook your hands and wrist up to electrodes and this machine will send slight electric signals to your fingers and wrist. I had to get refered from a hand surgeon first though. Hope this helps.

60 here. hasn't moved since high school.
49 is great. Most world class distance runners are in the 40-50 range.
I read that Lance Armstrong's resting rate is 32-34. That is freaky.

Mine is about 47 right now. When I'm really out of shape it is about 65. But when I get into top athletic form (and I will!) it should be about 40.
Not bad for an old fart!!!

BUT.....no, my blood pressure stays in the 110-70 range (actually the doc said it's kinda low)

Hey.... some of you may remember my complaining about pulling something in my chest a while back.... well now I also have some pain in my back and side on the same side. It gets worse when I move certain ways or pick up my always-gaining-weight-daughter (who's 17 mos. old.). I really dont wanna stop lifting but I feel like I really should give it a rest for awile.
I think i would even be dumb to try to do just biceps and triceps. Anyone have any ideas on how to treat this assuming it is pulled muscles?
Sad.... :)Kelli

Ohh... and I know you all will say see a doc... but I am uninsured at the moment so I can't really justify a visit for something non life threatening.... :(
Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (186 posts) at 05:22 PM
First, I'd try soaking in a VERY hot tub. It may just be tightness and since you've already ruled out going to a doctor, the tub may loosen it up. Also, try taking something like Advil or Naprosyn if you can. They are nonsteriodal anti-inflammitories, so they may do some real good in this case.
If those two things don't work, then you should SEE A DOCTOR. After all, it could BE something serious. You can never tell.

Tried getting the vanilla EAS whey protein and mix it with 1/2 a banana and a strawberry and it is awesome!!! I love it! Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Ditch the bars unless it is an emergency. They are loaded with sugar and lopsided in favor of Carbs over protein. Are you using the myoplex lite in a blender with ice. I really love them....we use Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (291 posts) at 02:33 PM
sounds like a good plan pam, however you don't have to buy eas, there are plenty of comapies out there with products that are just as good. I love the myoplex but all of my other supplements are from other manufacturers!
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (792 posts) at 02:46 PM
not too many other companies sell the creatine + HMB combo. Not that I have found.
I got stuff called Betagain--tastes horrible. Won't use it.
I think with using the two different supplements, you just have to be careful with using the correct combinations.
Good Luck.
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (291 posts) at 05:36 PM
tc, I knew that she wasn't going to use betagen. Also besides Betagen and maybe Muscle Armor (new product out) there aren't any real unique products that EAS has. This stuff can get expensive and a lot of the other companies are cheaper and just as good quality. Lala, all manufacturers have instructions on the labels, follow these and research the product and you will be in good shape. Take care!
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1031 posts) at 07:13 AM
OMG--Thanks for posting this! I'd be willing to drive from Indy to get some great deals on products! They do already have a distrubution center on the West side of town here. Double Score!
I do agree that it's sad that EAS was bought out, but I'd rather have their products available than see them go out of business.

I just finished a bottle of Lipo6 and thought it was ok. I used to use the real fat burners with the ECA stack (Ephedrine, Caffiene, Asprin) before they were banned. Those really worked awesome and I do miss them but I guess the Lipo6 worked better than some of the other ones. I tried ThermoDynamix and hated it. Everyone reacts differently to these though.

Thanks for the replies. I am intersted to know how that works out for you Agent69. I am hesitant to try these fat burners.. but I am looking for a way to jump start some fatloss before my trip. I am following BFL right on.. and will continue to do it long term.. just wish there was a way to get some more noticable results by march 4.. i know i am breaking all kinds of BFL morals.. but the deadline is coming!! :S

The fat burner that I use is 20 minute cardio 3 days a week with alternating lifting 3 days. j/k
I used Betalean a while back and found it lacking. It just seemed to be alot of caffine. I am finding the best fat loss to be week 9 of this challenge.
I will be interested to see if some of the others work though.

Forest Tech,
I've tried to find evidence that fat burners work for the past 3 years. To date I can only say these four things with certainty.
1.) BFL works, allowing one to loose weight safely and effectively at a rate of between 1 to 3 pounds per week (your mileage may vary).
2.) You will be hard pressed to find any definitive and quantitative studies stating that fat burners are effective in promoting fat loss at an advantageous and/or cost effective rate. If you find one, email me about it (and remember, I said quantitative, not subjective or testimonial in nature.).
3.) If a web site is actively engaged in selling or promoting a "fat burning" product, then they have some kind of vested interest in it. And if that is the case, what does that suggest about the objectivity and accuracy of their reports regarding its effectiveness?
4.) Every fat burner in existence works -- in adding to the gross sales of the company that sells them.
I'm satisfied with number one!

Thanks everyone! We have 146 recipes as of today and it's only Jan. 19! I'm sure we'll get 500, if not more by Feb. 15.
My sister is waiting for her blood counts to reach an acceptable level so she can be transferred to the transplant facility. The family is moving her to save money because an ambulance ride from Florida to NC would be outrageous and her insurance won't cover it. She's developed mouth sores from the chemo and the mouthwash that is suppose to help those makes her sick... but she did get up and walk some yesterday. She is so weak right now. It's hard to believe my strong Navy girl finds it a chore to get out of bed.
Times like these I sit back and think of Julie Whitt and the inspiration she was to so many. When my sister is up here with me in NC and is having a good day where we can talk, I want to tell her about Julie. Cyndi has talked about visiting St. Jude's when she's better and I pray that she will have that opportunity one day. I know she has the potential to reach others and inspire just like Julie did and continues to do. I will use Julie's memory to inspire my sister to fight for her life and then take it, take it and run.
Thanks again for all your prayers and for contributing to our cookbook. I will definitely post when they are ready!
And YES - we welcome BFL recipes!!!!

So far it sounds like this conversation has not happened so go into it without stories that he/she does not support you even if that is what you think right now. Of course we are creating citizens for a better society so the message we send must be clear. I do not respond normally to posts not related to BFL but saw yours and did. Depending on how long you are into the program and how long you have been keeping your brown rice for your 5th meals. After being in a while into the program and tweaking my nutritional plan, there are rarerly any carbs (except starchy carbs, veggies) into my last 2 meals but for a start and how from now you did manage you nutritional plan, and if your workout are much more done in the beginning of the days, cutting your non starchy carbs will be a good strategy.
Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (26 posts) at 06:04 PM
Why would I cut non starchy carbs? I think maybe you misspoke (mistyped) starchy and non starchy carbs. Starchy carbs are things like rice, potatoes, pasta, corn.

Remember - this is a team challenge. Your team mates are depending on you to participate and turn in your stats on time. This is still anyone's race. When you turn in your stats, your captain can turn in the numbers. This is a team effort everyone has to help each other.
Just because Team #5 is in the lead doesn't mean they're going to win. It means they have to look over there shoulders at everyone else nipping at their tail.

Okay, my husband just made reservations for us to go to Sicily in April. But, I'm a little freaked about the plane. It's a 757. Anyone ever flown a 757 to Europe? Was it okay or the most uncomfortable thing ever? I'm so afraid it's gonna be a bumpy, lumpy horrible flight. I think we've been spoiled by the 767's. I sound like a real spoiled brat. I should be happy to be going but I'm afraid to fly. Anyone have any thoughts? ~Debbie

Oh I'm right there with you! I am TERRIFIED of flying!
My bf and I are going to London & Paris next month and I know i am gonna be a wreck pre-flight!
I can tell you my international flights (regardless of the plane) ALWAYS go smoother than the continental flights.... I dont know it its because of air currents, or they have better pilots flying the international flights... I have yet to have a bad international flight *knock on wood*..
Enjoy your trip! And while youre up in the sky just keep thinking about where you are heading and how incredible its going to be! And have a wine for me!
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1031 posts) at 11:20 AM
When I flew to Germany years ago, we were on a very large plane and the ride was great.
Don't worry about it! Take the flight to rest up and adjust to the time change. The flight will be fabulous because it's taking you to a fabulous place!

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (71 posts) at 11:27 AM
Thanks you guys! By the way, when I fly, my doctor gives me a sript for Xanax. That's the ONLY thing I take them for. Usually it works. But I can't get too high a dose because my daughter is with us and I don't want to be vegged out while she is up.
Also, that one plane is just to Paris. Then a flight to Rome. Then Palermo! Yikes!
So, Scattergold, I'll have many wines once we get there. I know from experience that we generally have wine with every lunch and dinner! Somehow it's not like a drunken vacation. Must be that all the great food buffers the alcohol. I don't even drink at home.
Anyway, thanks again.
Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (75 posts) at 02:36 PM
I've been to Europe 5 times, two of those times to Italy (Rome & Venice).
I'm not familiar with the types of planes, but all of my flights were fine so don't worry about it. I'm sure you'll do fine.
If you're worried, make sure you're super tired so you can fall asleep in the plane. All my flights to Europe departed at night so by the time we landed, it was morning time in Europe. I was wide awake by then and was able to enjoy the day. Alcohol would help too if you need help falling asleep :)
One advice I have is to bring some earplugs. There was a young child on one of my flights and he cried the whole way.
Oh yeah, you make want to take some Airborne. You want to boost up your immune system to avoid sickness.
I'm so jealous! I used to go at least once a year to Europe. But due to financial constraints, I'm passing this year.
Enjoy!

I think that is an understatement! My son had a MAJOR BLOWOUT last night at my friends house, he pooped so bad, it ran out his diaper, down his legs and out his pants onto the floor.. We couldn't for the life of us figure out which dog had pooped in the floor! But it was my son, I took his pants off and it was all over his back, legs, butt, you name it, IT WAS THERE! I had to take him outside and hose him off? YUCK!
I am like where did THAT come from, he ate normal, like a pig.... ha ha,, no signs this was coming on,,, and WHAM!
Then this morning after his Autism Group At Tripler, he vomited on himself while sitting in his NEW Jogger! Did I say NEW? So I changed him again, got him all the way to the daycare, thinking ok, it was what he just ate up there, didn't agree with him, he was smiling, acting semi normal,, and I sat him down to leave, WHAMMMM!
He vomited AGAIN, and again I changed him... and had to take him to work with me, which you don't do!
I got some work done, answered some e-mails, and WHAMM, he vomitted AGAIN! So I had to take him home at that point, made him an appointment for tomorrow and tried to get him to eat. He ate, 2-4 baked fries, handful of dry spaghetti and 2 squirts of yogurt!
Poor Baby and exhausted me, missed my workout today, missed a meal,,, Man what a day!

I am horrible at loggin eveything, but I have noticed that if I at least try to plan my meals a few days in advance I make progress. IS it the optimum progress, probably not, but I am just not organized of a person, no matter how hard I try. i Have even purchased the journal and made my own journal, and they are both blank after the first few pages... soo bad..
Now I feel guilty...

where do you hear that? There are plenty of bodybuilders who get their protein from Soy, they are partial vegitarians (They eat eggs and dairy, but no meat) so they have to use soy to supplement their protein requirements.
The problem really comes in that protein is synthesized at a different rate then other foods (carbs and fats), and animal protein is synthesized the best (it stays with your body for 3 hours) where as soy stays in your body for less time..
at least from what I have read.

tcstone, shkelly, thanks for the replies. From what you have said I think I've been pretty close on portions. I was a bit worried I was loosing muscle along with the fat since I dropped quite a bit of weight the first week but I've noticed my weight has began to level out now.
Thanks agian

I personally love peanuts in chocolate.
I have been craving them since I started and can't seem to find the "good kind". I am not allowed in the fancy candy/chocolate store here for them and somehow on Free Day I haven't been able to get over there.
So I am thinking this free day I might have to make it a point to get there and get the chocolate covered peanut craving out of the way!
Regular peanuts are delicious too though.

Yup, headphones w/ radio or mp3 player definitely helps. It keeps your mind off other people and keeps you focused on your own workout.
And definitely take advantage of the 3 free sessions with the trainer. Once you get the hang of things and learn how to use the equipment, you'll be much more comfortable in no time.
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (342 posts) at 01:08 PM
I thought I was the only one who wore headphones so I don't have to listen to every conversation in addition to TV and Musak.
Sometimes when I am trying out a new exercise, I practice it at home. It wouldn't hurt to have a few 1 or 2 lb dumbells to help feel where the muscle(s) should flex (Target has some at the $1 spot this month).
Give yourself a few weeks and you'll be an old pro. Remember that most people are shy and self conscious too.
Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (75 posts) at 09:26 AM
I have no doubt that The Firm LBWO is challenging.
However, are you using enough weights on the machines at the gym? If you follow the BFL way of weight training, you will definitely feel it.

Body for Life Forum Message by akladydi (14 posts) at 05:39 PM
Yes I am looking for the exercise guide. I am looking for a chart that tells you how to perform the exercise and for what muscle group you are working. Thanks Diane
Body for Life Forum Message by sixpack (50 posts) at 12:03 AM
Most people are on a constant search for the path of least resistance. A drug, a supplement, a “breakthrough technique” a new machine, a shortcut in exercise form—anything and everything they think will help them reach their goals with less effort and in less time. This is typical human nature. Unfortunately, this is also faulty thinking and you will NEVER become a champion with this type of attitude
This is a good quote from that article that really qualifies to life.

I usually do my cardio (usually running on the treadmill) first thing in the morning - as we all know, it's supposed to be the best for burning fat.
However, I've noticed that I have way more energy in the early evening, and my speed is much better at that time. I'm running harder.
So which is best for me? Running slower (but still at intensity 10), on an empty stomach, or later, fed & watered, and faster?
Thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (424 posts) at 04:46 PM
If you want to burn fat then in the AM. If you are training for a run then at night or when you are at your best.
Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (296 posts) at 05:46 PM
Im with ya eve~ i have hardly any stamina in the morning/early afternoon. For this reason, I choose to do it in the evenings, around 6 or 7 pm. I have way more energy, and it works well for me.
Whatever works the best for you is the right answer.
If you're tired in the AM, you prob arent going to get that great of a workout in.
On the other hand, if you are energetic in the PM, you will have GREAT workouts! Like i do!
Good luck in your challenge!

I appreciate the help

I do spinning on Wednesday mornings and I count this as HIIT cardio. I don't do an additional 20 min cardio as it would be too much.

How much do these fancy drinks cost on average in the states? Up here people drink Tim Horton's in astounding volumes.. so I was wondering if Americans drink starbucks the same way that we have Tim's? (Although Tim's is more the equivilent of a D&D coffee.. not a gourmet one) Tim's is consumed more than food by many people I know.. and from personal experience I am convinced there is something added that hooks you.. your body doesn't react the same way as to normal coffee..

This has been the hardest part of the challenge for me, giving up my morning coffee. I have managed to cut down the amount of sugar I use and am trying to get it to 0 sugar, so I guess it's not that bad. No creamer or milk for me, what's the point I want to taste coffee, not milk or creamer right?
Body for Life Forum Message by Booloo (29 posts) at 08:00 AM
I'm actually a Dunn Bros. gal. They have more options for SF syrups, when I'm craving something sweet. A SF NF latte is the way I go instead of heading for the donuts. And I have to stick to the drive through, to avoid the temptations inside. I don't worry about the extra carb and cals, since the come from milk - and milk to me is like bananas (oh, not *that* argument again!), I don't feel one bit guilty about drinking milk, I just make room for it in my day.
So to answer the question: A skinny latte with sugar free syrup. OR... just a nice big cup o' joe with a little splenda and a splash of soy creamer.

Blemt, I got angry at myself this morning for almost forgetting something today. My buddy, who was with me, told me, "Shake it off. Put the power of that rage against yourself into your cardio today.Punish yourself on that stair-step machine." So I did...and it was a good, hard workout. I was totally spent...and totally content. Shoot, I didn't even have the energy left to be angry at that point.
I am a recovering self-abuser. I used to hate myself for any and all reasons. Getting into the BFL lifestyle has been trememdous for me. I am finally taking charge of my body and living a self-supportive, well-adjusted life.
What that post reminded me of was that we are all on kind of a good plane ride...the kind that's taking us to a place we want to be. Yeah, sure, there's a lot of wait time and all that, but once that jet's in the air, there's no "chickening out"....you've gotta ride it until it lands...
That's how I look at BFL living now...the meals, the working out, everything.
That post was so beautiful and so true. Thanks. It really touched my heart.

No, actually I'm not =) But you would think I am wouldnt you? Actually I've been known to be a muffinaholic... and occasional scone binger.... ;-)
I guess its just when youre surrounded by everything saying carbs = stored fat now for so long its hard to reverse it! And it doesnt help that my bf is convinced we're not loosing weight because I insist on sneaking carbs into our meals.... although, last night I didnt tell him how many carbs are in brussels. ;-)
By the way.. I used our electric scale this morning to figure out my BF% (finally figured out how to use the silly thing) and it read that I have 28% bf =( Altho, I was happy to step onto it and see my weight dropped to 108 =D
I've also gotten the hang of fitday, and went nuts last night adding everything in my cupboard into the database.... my menu today is 42/40/18 =)

Hi Scattergold,
I have found that the scales and the BF% they calcualte are always high. MOst people will tell you that this is the case, becuase they use electrical shocks to go up your legs and back to get the number, so that isn't accurate.
You would be better off taking measurements and using one of the wbe sites like http://www.mybodycomp.com or that Navy site http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php to calculate it for you. BUt which ever one you choose, be consistent through out your challenge...

The worst thing you probably did was skip the other meals. That said, lets say the "worst" thing from there is the crust is probably the worst carb you could have chosen - NO BIG DEAL!!! You could have in an attempt to balance the meal out taken some chicken off the other pieces & piled it on the 2 you ate (I'm assuming they were skimpy on the chicken) this is what I would have done.
JMO - totally salvageable but others may beg to differ.

What would I do? Continue the 12-week journey as though nothing ‘bad’ happened. Thanks for all of the great posts- you all have great ideas. I am going to try to find a good pain management doctor- my experience thus far has been that the 3 doctors I have been to don't really know how to deal with piriformis syndrome.
Essentially, they have not given me any other option than 800 mg inburofen, cortisone injections or no exercise for recurring muscle spasms in the piriformis. I had to get off the ibuprofen bc of stomach irritation and I have read that the cortisone injections can cause the pain to get worse or 'rebound.' At that point, I kind of turned away from western medicine and started a special massage series called rolfing, hoping that it works.
I do a small yoga workout in the mornings to stretch the muscles and an upper body weight training workout 2 times a week. But I would like to go back to weight training for my lower body, which is where my body stores fat. Deadlifts really exacerbate the sciatica and so do squats, hamstring curls, or lunges with weights. Any ideas on modifications for these exercises????
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (342 posts) at 08:12 AM
I belong to the BFL Women's Forum/Newsgroup and I posted a thread about being afraid of deadlifts and here is the reply I received from my favorite moderator, Skwigg. The links are really informative.
There are many, many variations on the deadlift. If you're doing a *straight back* stiff-legged deadlift, you would stop at mid-shin. http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Hamstrings/BBStrBackStrLegDeadlift.html
If you're doing a standard stiff-legged deadlift and you're at all flexible, you may actually need to stand on a platform in order to drop the barbell past where the floor would be. http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Hamstrings/BBStraightLegDeadlift.html
If my back were prone to locking up on me at the bottom of the move, I'm not sure I'd be doing either of them. :-)
I have a notoriously gimpy low-back and can do deadlifts without putting any strain on it. I need the platform and can drop all the way down comfortably. Generally, if your form is right-on, the deadlift doesn't cause back pain. Some variations may be better/safer for you than others though.
So, uh, I guess I'm saying double-check your form, go easy on the weights, and see if you can find a deadlift variation that's comfortable on your sciatic nerve. If not, I'm also really fond of
hyperextensions: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Hamstrings/BB45Hyperextension.html
Although, I guess that might be an even worse contraption to lock up on. :-/ You can't go wrong with the leg curl machine. Here are some more options for hamstring exercises:
http://www.bodyresults.com/E2Hamstrings.asp
http://exrx.net/Lists/ExList/ThighWt.html#anchor1942303
Check out the assortment of hamstring stretches on the right side of that bottom link. I would make sure that you've warmed up with 5-10 minutes of light cardio, and do a couple of warm-up sets with light weights before really hitting it hard. And then do some of the stretches afterward.
You might want to talk to a physical therapist, exercise physiologist, or highly certified trainer (like an ACE Clinical Exercise Specialist) to get a better idea of how to strengthen the area and avoid problems.

How can something have 69 calories but no fat, carbs, or protein?
My bet is that this whisky contains 17.25 grams of carbohydrates, most of which are sugars.

Hello everyone,
This is my first week on BFL after 3 failures. This time I have committed myself and today is my 3rd day and so far I’ve been doing wonderful. I’ve had tough good workouts and my eating habits have been better than ever. My problem is that this weekend (like every weekend) I will be hanging out with my friends in the local casino bar. I don’t know how to approach my friends introducing my new diet. I have decided not to fail this time. What do you guys recommend? Or does anyone have good low calorie drinks that wouldn’t affect my progress? Thanks ahead for your response.

I heard that drinking alcohol can prohibit fat loss for up to 24 hrs after being consumed. I'm not sure if it is true.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (266 posts) at 05:32 PM
Hot Body asks a good question about the drink discussed, how it could have no carbs and still be alcoholic. Technically, very technically, ethyl alcohol is not a carbohydrate, but turns into one so quick it might as well be. Alcohol has 9 calories per gram, exactly the same as fat. http://www.alcoholreviews.com/NEWS/calories.shtml

I can't believe it, I got a job, and I wasn't looking for one, that was the last thing on my mind.
The owner of the Gym I go to called and said she has a contract with the school District to start a wellness group for the falculity.
I will be teaching aerobics 3 days a week at 2 high schools. I start January 30th
I am so excited!
Then she said if I get certified for Personal training she will give me her clients, (she is a nurse, 2 kids, going to school to become a nurse practicner, owns the gym and said it's just too much.)
I sent off for my certification registration books and I recieved them today. will start studying tomorrow.
Just think 2 years ago I thought I was fat and old and my aerobic days and exercise days were over, and now at almost 52 next month, I'm back in the swing of it all and going at it more then I ever have.
Thank you so much BFL and my BFL family for giving me the courage to take my live back snd GET*HER*DONE!!

Have you ever had one of those days where something just seemed different with you body? This happened to me yesterday. I had finished my UBWO, and gone home and took a shower. I was in the shower when I noticed, "hey my belly looks a little smaller." I got out, grabbed the Myotape, and sure enough the measurement around my waist was down about 3/4 inch, and around my neck by a little under 1/2 inch since measure last week. I was pretty happy, but I thought what the heck is happening. Is this the paper towel theory at work, or that significant change that others say occurs around week 8 or 9? Either way, it was great.
Now, as Paul Harvey would say, here's the rest of the story. I received not one, not two, but three different people saying something about how I looked different yesterday. Whooo Hoooo!
So, keep up the hard work, and have a wonderful, great BFL day.

Apologies to my blogging buddies who may have seen this post on my blog. I'm re-posting this here for research purposes. I thought it might reveal some male-female psychology that we should be aware of, that's all.
I'm trying to understand this huge row my partner and I had last spring. I was doing BFL and doing well but he made this comment about my butt. Something about how it gave him a warm sense of satisfaction that I was losing weight. It made me absolutely livid and not only did it put me off BFL, we actually split up over it (there were other factors too) and I didn't speak to him for five months. So although this might seem to be a funny post, there were some actual pretty dire consequences.
Anyway, my BF and I were trying to work out why we had split up (we're now back together). He's very pleased that I'm doing well and I was genuinely concerned we were going to repeat that old pattern of breaking up and me falling off the BFL wagon. So this is something of the conversation we had about comments about my butt:
I have a big butt. I can admit I have a big butt but I don't want anyone else to say I have a big butt. It's okay to say "you used to have a bigger butt" but not okay to say "you used to have a smaller butt." You can say "you've really improved" but not "you've really improved because I asked you to or hinted that you should improve." It's fine for me to say "I wish I had a smaller butt" but not fine for you to agree with me. In fact, the best answer to this wish is simply to say, "is there anything I can do to help you achieve this wish?" This, of course, is not fair that there are certain limitations on what you can say about my big butt but it is my big butt. I'm the one who has to sit on it and clothe it. And no, wishing that I had a smaller butt because you don't like big butts and prefer smaller butts is not the way to encourage me to stay on a diet and exercise programme. Saying you fancy other women with smaller butts isn't such a great move either.
These subtleties were the centre of a rather intensive debate between BF and I the other day. You see, BF and I have only just gotten back together after about five months of not speaking to each other. The reason was because while I was getting good results from BFL the first time around, BF started making comments about my butt and the warm feeling of satisfaction he had because my big butt was getting smaller. This made me feel controlled by him in some way I didn't like and to this day can't understand. I wanted a smaller butt but I didn't want BF to think I was working on a smaller butt to please him alone. Even though I understand a small butt is prettier to look at than a big butt. Even though I want a small butt too and I completely agree that me with a small butt is preferable to me with a big butt. But I can say this--he can't. Even though the goal I wrote in my diary went something like this "I'm lying on a beach in a bikini on my honeymoon next to BF." The challenge that went with this goal went completely out the window and I never finished that challenge(there were other factors but BF saying he got a warm glow of satisfaction from me being on my way to smaller butt put me off). I wanted to be in a bikini, I guess now that I've had the opportunity to analyse my weird self, because it somehow re-dresses the power in the relationship. If he ogles other women all I have to do is shake my smaller butt in someone else's direction. Keeps him in check, keeps me in check. For him to imply I was working on a smaller butt for him alone was a bit of a wind up. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. . .
Let's try again. I have a big butt that is getting smaller. It's okay to notice my big butt is getting smaller but not okay to imply it's because of something you've said you wanted. When my big butt becomes a smaller butt you can't cry because other men start to admire my small butt. But then we can talk about my butt all you want.
I hope this clears up any confusion.
Love,
P
PS Have a great BFL day--and by the way, I'm still on the programme even though the BF says he likes my new, smaller butt.

Here some irony for you... I lived my entire life thinking my butt was way out of control. Then I met my fiance, who WORSHIPS my butt. Feeling so appreciated, I let the butt get a little out of hand, and now I'm back to trying to shrink down the butt. Full cycle.
Oh well... glad you're both happy :)

I shared this story with my friend who is a "big and proud of it" woman. She says she CELEBRATES having to buy bigger dress sizes because she gets new clothes. Her BF adores her size. Unsurprisingly, she was completely outraged to hear my story. She said if I ever got back with my BF, she'd never speak to me again (we're still speaking--so she didn't mean it). I'd love to share their enthusiasm for the fuller figure but I just can't--and yet I've had a fuller figure all my life. Somehow, I got so tangled up in being stubborn and autonomous that even though I didn't want to be fat, nothing could get me to take steps to stop being fat. I'm in new territory here. But I love it!!

I think it's the psychology of him voicing satisfaction over your dimishing rear. He's not doing the work, why should he feel "a warm sense of satistifaction"?
I think there should be a manual out there that tells significant others how to complement. Like wouldn't the bst complement be "Wow, your hard work is really paying off. You look great!" and then leave it at that.
Be proud of your body, P! It may not be perfect, but it's yours. Thanks for the story!!
Heather
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (54 posts) at 08:02 AM
I don't know your individual circumstances obviously, but he may have just been paying you a compliment which you took the wrong way. From what you've posted he didn't actually say "You've got a big butt" did he? Or imply that you're only doing the program for his benefit? What's wrong with someone taking pride or sense of satisfaction in a partner's achievements?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (270 posts) at 08:10 AM
My (now ex-)BF used to try and take credit for things in my life and I had the same reaction. He said it was because of HIM that I was losing weight... he said it was because of HIM that I was succeeding in radio. It's a childish reaction to stop doing whatever it is he's taking credit for, but I think it's also a natural reaction.
And now that he's my ex, he doesn't take credit for it, now he just doesn't understand it... "You want to look like THAT??? Ewwwwww! I don't want to hug someone who looks like that!"
Guess what, honey? You don't get to. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (481 posts) at 08:11 AM
Ah, RyanCTJ, if you didn't know already, women are weird (well, I am anyway!). LOL Welcome to the snake pit!! Men can't say anything about our butts that isn't going to get them in trouble! "Darling, does my butt look big in this?" is a trap!! A trap I say!
Seriously, he did kind of imply I was doing the BFL for his benefit. There's no doubt I took it the wrong way. His compliment completely tripped some psychological switch that not only made me very angry but knocked me off BFL. I know that this is not the reaction either of us wanted. I suspect it's something more to do with issues of control--and the idea that since it's my butt he has to love it no matter how big it is or how much I say I hate it!
Men have a very difficult life, don't they??
With very best wishes,
P

Maybe his warm feeling of satisfaction didnt stem from the fact you were finally losing weight or anything malicions - maybe its a 'different' warm feeling *wiggles eyebrows*.
Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (481 posts) at 08:22 AM
Well, I want my man to enjoy me. Yes I do--I benefit from that in a number of different ways. He refers to the big butt subject as "the thing we can never mention" (kind of like Voldermort from Happy Potter!) But I say "for a subject we can never talk about, it gets a lot of airing!" I THINK I can talk about it without flying off the handle or being offended that the subject is brought up. But I THINK he gets mad because up until now I wouldn't do anything about it. So it makes me angry that there's a double edge sword here.
This really is helping by the way. Thanks for the comments.

I TOTALLY relate to this! I could get myself all riled up telling you stories of comments like "are those your skinny or fat pants?" "Are those jeans getting a little tight?" etc.
I know my dh means well, but he is horrible at the way he says it. And I am horrible at adding all kinds of extra things to it.
To me..."Are those jeans getting a little tight?" includes "because I don't think you are doing as much as you could be doing to get that butt down, and oh, by the way your chin is a little chunky too, and let's talk about your thighs too" To him it meant "those jeans look a little tight."
I have to take it all with a grain of salt, and blow it off. I know I am doing my best, and that is what counts! :)

I can definately relate! I have had a big butt all my life (thanks to genetics) even when I was 125 pounds with a 24 inch waist, I had 36 inch hips and a bubble butt you could set drinks on! I hated it, was embarrassed about it, but could do nothing about it (I was 125 and in the best shape of my life, obviously my butt wasn't getting any smaller). Then I met my DH and he was first attracted to my "great a$$". I was happy about this appreciation of my asset, had kids, got fat, and slowly my butt crawled up my back! It wasn't so great anymore. Now it is going back down, I am happier, and things are better. I know I won't have a "small butt" ever and I thank Jennifer Lopez for making "bigger butts" sexier and accepted, I am just trying to make my butt a "great a$$" again!!!

This is where the rubber meets the road in relationships. eh? I have a flat butt, wishing I had some curve to it. And I will by the time I finish this challenge.. PTL…. I also had Big boobs until my breast reduction 8 years ago , a recommendation by my Dr.
My ex bf,, was a big boob kind of guy.. He would point out ALL the women he wished I looked like and even went as far as to ask if I would consider a boob job.. Did he offer to pay for it? That would be a NO !!! HELLLOOO
When someone loves you they love ALL Of you.. fat, skinny, big butt, small boobs, unorganized, smoker, whatever.. its called unconditional acceptance/love.. Its hard enough that we can't accept ourselves unconditionally, and since we can't run away from ourselves, why in the heck should we spend time with someone ELSE who won’t accecpt us unconditionally!!! I mean, unless the guy I am with is a Greek God, carved perfectly from stone, then he can shut-up!!
I personnaly have the 3 strike rule I use in dating: (pertaining to commited/exclusive dating relationships)..
Disrespect – Strike 1 – this does include unsolicited criticism! And any other form of insults!
Controlling Tendacies/Double Standards – Strike 2 - I like _________ … I don’t like _____ could you change it for me .. For example.. I smoked when I met my ex a year ago.. after dating for 3 months and becoming exclusinve, he tells me he does not date smokers, its one of his pet peeve, and would really like for me to quit.. Helllooooooo you lit my cigarette the nite we met ...why did you bother asking me out? Needles to say .. I compromised and did not smoke in his presence out of respect…. however, in my own home, I did smoke and he would use manipulation, i.e. silent treatments, anger, conditional love/attention, etc.. ,, and
that was STRIKE 3… L A T E R -- BYE BYE..
Today I am with someone who not only respects me, but encourages be to be my best and when I ask.. he gives me suggestions to “tweak” myself for the better. We have been together for 7 months.. So far.. no strikes against him.. and we are doing BFL together.. When we got our BEFORE pics back… he even said to me.. “I know how you feel about your body , but you still look good to me.. now you will look good for you, and we are doing this together!!” God bless that Man!!!
Anyway, thank you for letting me share… we all go thru so much stuff in our personal life that its nice to read what others do when they encounter these types of things..
P… I think once you accept your body as it is, and believe its beautiful regardless of where you are in your Challenge, then any man you are with will also find it beautiful.. I use affirmations to turn my negatives to positives.. for you I give you this affirmation.. …. My Butt is Beautiful just as it is today!
have a great day and weekend.. : )

Oh man, I HAD to reply to this thread!!
I can say I DEFINATELY relate to you this way! Granted, I am a bit off y roocker so you can take that whichever way you want. BUT... my husband is very supportive of me. He married me a little heavy and I am even heavier now. He has never said anything about my pants being tight, my chin(s) or anythinhg else. Yet, he still doesn't get to say anything that can even be remotely taken as him wanting me any other way than I am RIGHT NOW. No matter how many rolls and chins I have.
You might be able to say that isn't fair, but I think exactly the same way about him, no conditions attached. I expect him to love me and the body I am in unconditionally, just like I do him.
I am allowed to complain about my body because it is MY body. I live in it, I see it more than anyone else on earth does, I stuff it into clothes and schlep it wround with me everywhere I go. I am not allowed to complain about his body because it is NOT mine to complain about. If it has something to do with his health, that is another story. But for vanity alone? No way. To me, (notcie I said to ME) it's like saying "I will stop finding you attractive if you lost your hair or had an accident and becamse disfigured." If you don't love me just as much in any shell I walk around in, you're not good enough to love me at all. Harsh? Maybe. But it's the way it is. I found someone who can do just that, so we're cool. I will do the same for him. It goes both ways.
I expect nothing less than I give. Period.
I would get just as upset as you, girl.

Mornin' Pers! As I said on your Blog it's always interesting to see all the warpped "inside" rules that we as women have! I guess it doubly hard that the poor men don't even get a handbook like in baseball..when they hit puberty!
Maybe you, DG & some of the other gals that write should put one together!!

P, if you and the others write the manual that Lala mentions, I'll buy a copy. To peek inside the psyche of a woman, while scary to think about, may be helpful in the long run!

I don't understand women and men sometimes. Why would you be with someone who does not make you completely satisfied? This works both ways- If you are unhappy with the way he speaks to you on delicate issues or the way he does not appreciate you for you why stay with him. This man is not going to change and you will be left feeling bad about yourself or spend the rest of your relationship trying to make him how you want him to be towards you. - If he does not like you now all of you mind, body, and soul with no exceptions why doesn't he find someone else with the kind of butt he wants? You may get a smaller butt now and then, but life is life anything could happen. He will stay and try and change you to be what he wants. If you change back he will leave or complain. People need to realize to truely be with someone you love you need to be okay with them all of them. I am 100% okay with everything about my husband and will be forever. And he will love me and appreciate my beauty no matter what size I am. In fact he tells me I should realize we can't stay the same size forever are bodies do change as we get older. I know you will hear none of this and keep dating this man and I think that is sad:( I feel strongly about this because I had a friend who dated a guy off and on even after he broke up with her for "being fat" - his words not mine. She was never fat. She finally left him for good and now is in the best relationship ever - with the greatest guy who adores her for who she is. Respect yourself enough to know when something doesn't feel right it isn't right.
Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (481 posts) at 11:57 AM
Thanks for that Morpho Veja--and I did read every word of your post.
The thing is I don't like my big butt either. I know I owe it to myself not to be so fat and unhealthy, to completely lack confidence, to wish I could be someone with a smaller butt. It isn't just a vanity thing, it's a health thing. I think my thinking was like yours (he should love me no matter what size I am) when we split up but the bottom (ahem) line is: I know I'll be happier with a smaller butt too! My BF is honest and a good man. I CAN be hard headed and silly which is why this big butt thing is troubling me. My BF isn't wishing for anything that is beyond my control: he isn't asking me to look like Julia Roberts or develop the talents of Linda Lovelace. I think he wants me to be happy--and I suspect this is the message we're not getting across to each other. He dated me when I was fat, he'll date me when I'm fit and healthy. Even excluding his opinion, I know which one I'd rather be!
Whew. I think worked this one through!! Thanks for all your help!!
Love,
P

Whoever suggested a manual for such things, I'd be glad to start on one! (suggestions welcome!) It actually sounds like osmething fun to try and put together. These things are so logical to me and so illogical to my husband. I am sure it works the other way around, too. Dang venus/mars thing :)
I threatened my husband with forcing him to read a manual about which gifts were and were not appropriate for any given occasion (written by me, of course). I thought he would be offended. He was elated! Ha! Hint: a CD drive for my computer that I don't care about is not a very good gift for our first Christmas...lol. It's funny now but man was I dissapointed when I opened THAT box. And there was the Mother's Day that we can't even talk about anymore...LOL. God bless that man :)

I think this exact same way. I do not want anyone to tell me about my body's faults let alone someone I love. I can say that my husband is great and he does not act like your BF. I am luck.
I can say that I have been completly insulted by people walking up to me in public and commenting on the fact that I have gained weight. Like I don't know that already. It is so devestating to have these words said to you out loud. I was in City Hall paying a bill and a male person I know walked up the stairs with his arms held out wide. I said to him "What" he says "I just looked up the stairs and saw a middle aged women with a wide ride". I was flabbergasted. I did make the comment about him being rude and quickly left. I got in my truck to drive away and withing minutes I was bawling my head off. I turned around and let him know that I would have never dreamt of speaking to him like this(his is a big person). I also let him know that he can't speak to pleople like that.
Kinda off track a little but just wanted to comment that I feel the same way about my body. I am the only one that can say things about it. Thanks to all for listening.

I can relate too. My DH never says anything about my butt (he doesn't DARE) but he did mention that he will miss my boobs because he knows that is the first thing to go when I lose weight. The last time I did this, I went from a C to an A. No doubt that will happen again. Oh, well. He stuck with me from 190 lbs to 140 lbs, from 140 lbs to 220 lbs, from 220 lbs to 150 lbs, and from 150 lbs to 230 lbs. He'll just have to live through it once more, cuz I am done yo-yoing and I am done getting pregnant. And he'll have to live with smaller boobs as I do transform once again. That's what matters, I think. Your SO doesn't have to like the changes one way or the other, he/she just has to love you anyway. :)

Please tell me that isn't right??? I lost more muscle than fat according to my profile thing. But Im following the program (except for my little screw up of not eating enough yesterday) :( Somebody help! I reallly don't want to lost muscle. Does that mean I need to eat more..less..different????
Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (186 posts) at 08:35 AM
It could just be because of measurements being off or something similar. As long as you eat BFL style and workout BFL style, you should be fine.
Honestly, just stick to the meal plan and workouts and it'll all work out just fine.

Doesn't seem right to me.... just stick to it maybe you measured wrong.... I dont think it is possible to lose muscle that fast. Plus you have OBVIOUSLY lost fat. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (270 posts) at 03:21 PM
No... you lost three pounds of lean mass. There's a difference. It's poorly worded on your profile, because lean mass is determined by subtracting your body fat, based on the percentage you provide. EVERYTHING else in your body that is not body fat is your lean mass. Water, blood, muscle, water, bones, organs, water, everything... did I mention water? I'm guessing you lost 3 pounds of water. ;)

I have been reading a lot lately about some of us frustrated with little "mistakes" or beacuse we didn't follow the program with "perfection".
I know for me, and for many of us, perfection means doing everything we are supposed to do. Eating the right foods, at the right time, in the right quanitity, exercising at the right time, with the right intensity, and for the right length of time. It is overwhelming if we look at it like this.
I spent one whole challenge worrying about those things. And I fell on my face. I worried so much that when I did somthing "wrong" I either a. convinced myself it wasn't wrong and continued or b. binged. Neither option worked out well for me. I lost focus. I lost my drive.
This challenge I am committed to taking each day as a new day. When I can get up and workout, I should. Because I CAN. I CAN make the right food choices, I CAN resist temptation, and I CAN do what I put my mind to.
I refuse to get upset about a little food mess-up. I will acknowledge that I made a mistake...then move on and make a difference the next day. Julie Whitt made an incredible impact on me. Her video, her blog, her committment. We have life, we must live it. I never had the chance to meet her or speak to her but I was still moved by her message. Our goal in life is what she lived---to believe, to acheive, and to inspire.
Lets just take this BFL experience one step at a time. BELIEVE in yourself that you CAN make a difference. Life is life. Live it and enjoy it. Be healthy. Believe that YOU are capable of making changes to yourself and your body.
ACHEIVE your goals. If your goal is to get out of bed in the morning...DO IT. If it is to run a marathon--DO IT. Make your goals smart and attainable. My goal each morning is to pack my lunch bag full of foods that I can have and will enjoy. It is just something I DO.
INSPIRE. This comes naturally if you have the first two in line.
Our society today almost demands we live perfect when "perfect" is so relative. Much of this program is about faith. Blemt has an awesome post about faith--read it.
So as we are going through our 12 week challenges, lets all keep in mind that this is LIFE. This is 12 weeks out of LIFE. Use it well.
Stay Strong.
Teresa

The 12 weeks pass whether you do go with them or not. I get it!!! I can use the tools of Planning, Exercise, and goals to achieve so much more in the same amount of time that it would have taken to accomplish nothing but a larger pant size and a more strained relationship with my wife as a sat on the couch and filled my head with useless TV like the "VIEW" (sorry is someone likes that show).
Thank you I needed to know that.

What a great post! I've been working on my goals for my next challenge and "No cheating" is right on there. It's good have perspective.
Julie talking about "getting to workout" versus "having to workout" definitely stuck with me too and made me realize how lucky I am.

I love this post! I think about each day as an opportunity to practice what I've learned about working out and eating clean, and then I try to learn something new, about how hard I can push myself or how my body will respond to a new recipe or new combination. It's all fun!

Ever have those morning when you'd rather gouge out your eyes with a spoon than get up and go workout? We all have. But don't you feel so incredible when you actually do it? The whole time you're on your way to the gym and the whole time you're working out you're thinking how miserable you are, and how much you want this to be over. But when you're done, don't you feel great? You think, "Yeah, I kicked my lazy butt out of bed this morning and did it! I can do this! And now I'm healthier than I was when I got up this morning." When you don't feel like getting out of bed and working out, just remind yourself of how proud and satisfied you'll feel when you're done. That may come as little consolation when your alarm clock goes off, but it may help. I had to realize that the motivation I had at the beginning of BFL wasn't going to last. There was going to be days when I wasn't going to want to workout or eat right. It's what you do on those days that determines how successful your BFL experience will be.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1175 posts) at 10:49 AM
I did that this morning. I thought a couple of times about staying in bed instead of working out. But, I got up and did it and feel so good now. I am ok as long as I can get out of bed, it's getting out of bed that's the hard part.
