OK, I am one of those people that weighs themself like 4x a day.... I like to see how my weight fluctuates after eating, workouts, etc. My weight has been CONSISTANTLY between 144 and 147 for WEEKS. So this morning it is 140.5!!!!!!!!
BUT, not change in measurements or body fat %. Can that happen? ANd if so, is that bad? ( I use the Zone calculator by plugging in my meaurements for waist hips and height, which have not changed)
The only thing I did differently this week is HIIT almost every day coz I am injured and can't lift upper body. Ate correctly. What gives? AM I losing muscle?
Any opinions?
Body for Life Forum Message by reagan123 (121 posts) at 08:19 AM
i don't have a definate answer, but i'll say that "yes" that tends to happen sometimes. I was at 195 for about 2 weeks then one day 192. Not sure why or how, but I never went back up.
Congrats!
Body for Life Forum Message by AllorNothing (320 posts) at 08:46 AM
Unfortunately I would say that you may have lost some muscle mass. If you haven't done any UBWO's in a week and substituted Hitt then you probably lost a lb or two of muscle. Not a biggie though you will gain it back this week, work had and eat clean!

Sound nutrition and fitness advice like body for life is what works. On the other hand some fat burners do give that extra bit and in some cases it seems to give to much of a boost. How healthy are they??? This is something that will always be debated
Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1139 posts) at 03:36 PM
How is your nutrition plan?? Remember supplements still are secondary to a sound nutrition and fitness approach although many give an excellent added benefit.

I have used it in a previous challenge and think it's great. It gives you a lot more energy throughout the day and aided my fat loss on the program. My girlfriend is currently using it in combination with another nutrition plan and is getting good results on it also.

When I 1st started dating Jim he explained to me love was a choice and when you argue you have the choice to take the "high road" and appologize even though you dont think you did anything wrong.
We had an argument about something, he appologized first, and then I began arguing with him about his insincere appology! "You're just appologizing to take the high road, not because you really mean it!!!!"
So ladies, what do we want? An appology because he means it? Or an appology because he wants to keep the peace?????
Later on we laughed so hard because we realized how silly we were (aka: I was) being!!! Arguing over an apology!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep Pump'n

I sat down with all the professionals quacks at Tripler and all of them agree on the diagnosis! My son will be officially diagnosed with Autism and Development Disorder.. They want to put him on medication, forgot what it is called but it is suppose to help him calm down so hopefully he can focus and learn. He is still at the 18mth level as far as Development and Cognitive Learning. I am scared and nervous at the same time!
Sometimes I think I just want to scream, cry, hit something,, well you get the idea. I am worn out! Now I have to get him to all these medical appointments, for blood work and have to take him back each week for observations.... Wheew, when will it all stop? My little man is all over the place and I am slap worn out at the end of the day, trying to do something for myself and go to school. Thank god for online courses! Well please say a prayer for me, I need all the help that I can get!

Udenia, I'm glad you have a diagnosis. It's the first step in a long and sometimes difficutl process, but it will only get better from now on. The more professional help your son gets, the better he will do! I know it is hard, and I said a little prayer for you and your family. The earlier the intervention, the better! You will find yourself pleasantly surprised with his progress. My friend has an autistic boy. SHe is so grateful for the professional help. Best of luck! You sound like a wonderful mom.

I'm sending my thought and prayers to you and Cameron. Take some satisfaction in having a diagnosis and being able to move forward. I have a special needs child who has been going to tons of specialists since he was about 20 months old (he is now 6 1/2 years old). We still do not have a diagnosis. We are closer to having a clue - but nothing definite. No diagnosis has another set of frustrations because you don't know if you are helping the right way. I'm sorry to ramble but I work in education and there are great strides being made with our autistic children and their gifts to us are emmense. You will be challenged beyond your wildest dreams, but rewarded ten-fold!!! Love you and your little man. God Bless.

My daughter is turning 5 next week and we are having a big party for her. We rented a place which has these huge inflatables, we've been there and it's fun. Anyhow, I invited all the kids in her pre-school class and their siblings, we are expecting about 20 or so kids, boys and girls. I have decided not to give out goodie bags but to spend the money on a nice cake, balloons and flowers (my daughters request). Every goodie bag my kids have ever brought home has been junky toys and candy and usually gets thrown out. I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the goodie bags, but is it really necessary? Tell me what you think, would you be offended if your kids didn't receive a goodie bag? Do you think they will even notice? Thank you for your responses!!
Body for Life Forum Message by On~my~way (290 posts) at 07:37 AM
No they won't even notice! I totally agree with you!
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (512 posts) at 07:41 AM
I agree completely. They are a waste of money, IMO.
I went to a party where they gave different favors.... I don't know what the boys got but the girls got hair stuff- a headband and some bows. I thought that was cute....
For may daughter's b-day we gave ceramic piggy banks we found at the dollar store. I didnt think it was a big deal but they were a hit with the kids.
.... but I really dont think favors are necessary. I don't think anyone will notice if you skip it.
Body for Life Forum Message by balloo (18 posts) at 08:00 AM
the money that i would have spent goes to a charity. When we send out the invite we ask for no gifts but a $10 donation and $5 goes to a charity and $5 gets grouped together to buy one main gift. the charity of choice this year is sleeping children around the world. they will send a photo of the children that benifit from the donation and we can then make copies of the photo and send thank-you to the children and there families
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (847 posts) at 08:32 AM
NO, goodie bags are NOT needed. And for the most part as a parent.....I usually wish we had "forgotten" to pick ours up. We don't need the candy or cheap toys. And exactly, not to be ungrateful---but..... :)
However, my 4 year old has come to expect them. And this year was his first birthday party we threw for him and he has only been to about 3, maybe 4 classmates parties. This isn't to say you can't change things up.
This is what I have done...cheap and no candy. For my 2 year old, we had a parent/child pool party. I gave out a water pool toy/ball. They were 2 or 3 for a $1 and meant for them to play with while at the party. It was a hit.
For the 4 year old party, we bought plastic cups that said Happy 4th Birthday and put a Hot Wheels car (it was a Hot Wheels party) and a pencil. That was it. They loved that too.
You don't HAVE to give the bags, but it sounds like you are concerned about not giving anything. How about a balloon for each child to take home?
A Pencil? Simple, cheap, and you could decorate them with some ribbon if you are concerned.
Good luck. Sounds like the party is going to be rather fun!

If I can help in anyway to help keep you motivated just let me know or if you want we can have a weekly chat time to get together and inspire each other, let me know!
Welcome to team 4 !!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by crone (662 posts) at 04:55 PM
The following stats must be posted on your profile and sent to your captain by Sunday evening, January 29:
Current Weight and Current Body Fat Percentage
Throughout each of the 4 weeks of the challenge, you will keep track of your daily points as follows:
Consume a minimum of 80 oz of water each day - .5 point per day, 3 points max per week
On-plan BFL Food - 1 point per day, 6 points max per week
On-plan BFL Exercise - 1 point per day, 6 points max per week
*Note - the reason for the 3 & 6 point max is to allow for your very important FREE DAY!
Personal goal – see further down for an explanation
By each Monday evening at 9pm EST, you must update your profile information for the preceding week and send the following information to your captain:
Last Week’s Points and Current Weight
*Note: Update your profile and send points & current weight to your captain by the time due, then you can add an extra 2 points to your point total.
Max possible points for a week are 17:
3 (water) + 6 (food) + 6 (exercise) + 2 (stats in on time) = 17.
Once your captain has all of the team member's information, she/he will input the info into a spreadsheet. It will calculate weight loss and assign the points earned or lost accordingly. Weight loss points are calculated as follows:
Percent of Change from last week's weight multiplied by 2 - Max of 10 points per week
Finally, after week 4 we will also re-measure body fat percentage.
The loss of body fat is the biggest single points earning component of our challenge. It is calculated as follows:
Body fat percent of change is calculated and that amount of points will be awarded, max of 40 points per person.
*For example, if John Hottie started the challenge in Week 1 with a body fat of 20% and then after Week 4 concluded measured in with a body fat of 16%, that calculates to a percent of change of 20%. (.16/.20)-1=20% change. He would earn 20 points.
Personal Goal Bonus points – Optional
Identify a realistic, yet challenging goal for yourself for the 4 week challenge.
It may have a number tied to it for body fat % loss, or weight loss, or it could be increasing strength on a certain exercise, increasing your distance or intensity during HIIT or getting in 1 gallon of water every single day of the challenge. Whatever it is, it is YOUR personal goal for this challenge and it needs to be something that will push you.
You must send this goal and a SHORT explanation of why you picked it to your captain with your starting stats by Sunday evening. These will be posted on a team thread - if you put it in writing, you will commit!!
At the end of the challenge, you will take 10 extra points if you have completed your goal. This may not sound like a lot, but if everyone on the team is successful, you could add a lot of points to your total!!!
Let the Games Begin!!

I'm not sure if it is the same model you are looking at but I saw some at Garts sports and the sales rep was quick to point out they were junk for the price. The floor models were broken, they had a lot of plastic in them and sometimes the the correct weight did not stay in them.
I like them because they did not take up a lot of space but I'm happier with the full dumbell set for about the same price from Sams.

To anyone looking for equipment - I would suggest going to freecycle.org. There is one for every major city. You click on your nearest city and it takes you to a yahoo group for that city. People post all kinds of GREAT stuff that they are giving away - for free. Once you've posted and given something away you are allowed to post a "wanted" email. Here in Atlanta I've seen 3 treadmills and a health rider up for grabs since January 1.

Great idea! I operate by the same principle. The other night, we went out to dinner with my parents. They had some DELICIOUS onion rings left over. I treated myself to ONE. I was gazing at the other one, and I said, "Mom, do you mind if I douse this in tobasco sauce so I don't eat it?" So we did! Aha!!! Another good idea is pouring salt all over bad foods.

I do this at the dinner table when I am done.....water them down!
Or when the family is eating Pizza and it isn't free day for me....all leftover crusts (my favorite) get thrown in the sink and water on RIGHT AWAY ---as if were a bug that could die in water!
Who wants mushy bread? ;)
I good friend of mine has lost over 120 pounds this past year. She STILL does this....buys food she WANTS, but can't have. She buys it for the satisfaction of buying it, but hardly EVER eats it. If she does eat it, it is one bite and the rest is thrown away. Because once she starts eating it, it is hard for her to stop. So she has to either throw it out of make it inedible. But many times it is just the satisfaction of knowing she bought it. Stange birds we are, but it has worked for her.

If thats the case... why dont Japanese women have more weight issues... with the amount of soy products the Japanese consume?
From the sounds of that post consuming soy works against eating healthy....

DDRTeddy - ha ha ha ha Chicken boob!! That is sooo funny! I'm LOL. So cute! I will have to run that one by my friends to make them laugh today. hee hee! Thanks for the laugh.
Re: take ahead meals - I've discovered a few good ideas - cook meat in the crockpot, store it in tupperware or individually frozen bags, then when you need to eat, put on a sandwich with veggies & mustard, OR (yummy), wrap in a tortilla with lowfat mayo, veggies, lowfat cheese, and voila, a delicious lowfat homeade taco!
Take a real turkey breast (a 3lb one), slice it into about 7 sections, put in crockpot, pour chicken broth over it nearly to cover, a few dashes (maybe 5 'shakes') of liquid smoke, a little cumin, a little chili powder, a touch of garlic salt, cook on low for 8 hours. Comes out shredded and DIVINE. Now you have tons of servings of low fat delicious turkey for sandwiches, tacos, or just plain yummy protein.
Do the same with boneless skinless chicken.
Store your yummy protein in the fridge or freezer and you don't have to cook for a few days!!!

The EFL is the hardest part of this program. It's not the food choices, but the time spent preping and eating.
I'm not saying this to demotivate anyone, but you can't maintain this type of eating style for the rest of your life. It's too time consuming and restrictive.
For get about going on a vacation or business trip. EFL is out the window.
Besides who wants to get up at 5am on the weekends, just so they can be awake long enough throughout the day to eat 6 meals. I also can't see myself going to the gym 6 days a week every week for the rest of my life.
I love BFL and EFL it's working well for me. It gives me a sense of control over my own life/habits. But I know it's not really a lifestyle. It's a plan I can incorportate into my life to stay focused, make good choices and improve my health.

I am now in school studying engineering and helping my daughter prepare for her high school audition so there is NO time for anything! I spent the first couple of weeks back at school trying to figure out how to carry around easy lunches!!
Here's what I've come up with:
Baked chicken breast with a bunch of no-salt Mrs. Dash Chicken or Southwest Chipotle spices. It's so quick. Heat the oven up, spray a pan with cooking spray to stop them from sticking, slice the chicken breasts a bit on the top to help absorb the spices, spice it up, cover it up and bake. I bake at about 350 F for an hour. Then, I slice each breast length-wise (I don't need the whole thing) so it's long and wrap it in a small whole-wheat tortilla. Great cold! My daughter also loves these!!
I drink Body for Life RTD chocolate shakes...yummy! Also, Myoplex Lite bars.
As for other real food snacks, I put fat free chicken breast slices in a baggie and bring along a small bottle of Tropicana pure orange juice...done!
I was carrying around tuna mixed with onions and dill pickles wrapped in whole wheat tortillas, but while it was yummy, by the end of the day it was soggy and not as enjoyable.
During the weekend, I try to pre-cook big batches of whatever I will be needing. For evening meals, I pre-prepare extra lean ground beef with onions, garlic, Mrs. Dash Steak spice and a bunch of mushrooms. Then, I cook pasta and add it to the beef and voila...a great meal with a bunch of brocolli on the side!!
I also carry around a few almonds to munch on throughout the day for fat content and a bag of baby carrots to munch on when I get a little bit nibbly.
So far, so good! When I'm feeling hungry and I forgot my food, I stop in at the grocery store, buy some orange juice or a banana along with some meat slices (I like Schneiders) and snack attack resolved without resorting to fast food and it's so much cheaper!!
I do the best I can, but I don't beat myself up if I can't eat perfectly every day.
Hope this helps a bit! The eating part of this lifestyle is tough!!
Connie

I think the point of doing challenge after challenge is to change your habits. You will slide back to where you started unless you make this your new way of eating. I think that is why many people succeed in keeping weight off with weight watchers. They learn over time to adopt new habits.
I don't understand throwing away the "new" habits you have developed over 12 weeks. This plan is one that you need to adopt, for life, if you hope to look and feel good from here on in.
People who look great don't exercise and eat well in spurts. They have healthy habits which include daily exercise and smart choices on nutrition.
The American mentality is that there is some "free" pass to health and fitness. Lose quick and then go back to what you were doing. Doesn't work that way. If you want to be a healthy, attractive person, then you can't have unhealthy habits.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (330 posts) at 12:09 PM
Just eat what you want in moderation. I have completed 2 challenges and I took it easy between #1 & #2 challenges. This means I relaxed my eating restrictions somewhat, but not completely. I am now between #2 & #2 and I am doing the same. I eat fast food, I go out and eat what I want at a nice restaurant, and I eat Krispy Kremes. However, I do not do this to the level I used to before my 1st challenge. Also, it is not every hour like it used to be, where I would have a lot of junk throughout the day. If I eat fast food for dinner, then I'll be a little more conscious of what I eat the next day, and so on. It does the body good to back off a little between challenges, and it does not hurt. My eating habits have changed permanently for the better. Enjoy yourself and remember this is for life!

I dont know if I would take more than a couple days of free eating in a row. The reason being that bad foods are addictive and then you make it more difficult to come back to BFL. Sugar is especially troublesome and addictive. Good luck

I have been working out and eating healthy for like 6 years now, I don't think I have a problem getting back on, it just makes me want to kick butt when I start back on again. I will be training for a competition afterwards and wont get but 10 freedays in 19 weeks... (BUMMER)
I have HYPOTHYROID and so weightloss is slow for me, but I will be carb cycling the whole time... and doing 40 min cardio and lots of other stuff so I would like to know if I should just eat three meals a day or go with 6 small whatever I want meals aday... I don't plan on binging the whole time, and I don't live near any restarants (fastfood or anything, ) or stores,. I live an hour from all that, so no temptation there, the most I bing on is ice cream, Bread and oatmeal bake. YUMMY! so I don't know... thanks guys!

Russ and I found a very tasty BBQ sauce that doesn't add much sugar, although it is high in sodium. Most BBQ sauces are very high in sugar, this one isn't. Just thought I would share. It is K.C.Masterpiece Premium Classic Blend. The nutritional values are as follows:
2TBSP~10(Cal)~0(Fat)~410(sodium)~2(Carb)~0(sugar)
Watch the portion. It really kicks up our salmon, chicken, and turkey breast.

I have many of The Firm tapes and they are really tough! They could potentially be a great weight lifting challenge depending on what shape you are in and the amount of weight that you use, they are definitely an amazing cardio workout. I hit a 10 every time I use them as far as cardio is concerned, and sometimes with the weight lifting as well.
I think WorkInProgress is right that with The Firm, you reach muscle fatigue, but they may or may not replace the weight lifting piece of BFL. I know that I find it hard to maintain enough momentum at the gym with weight lifting to feel like I get that amazing workout I should because of waiting for a machine, or a weight, or whatever. I find my home workouts are more satisfying. But as far as video workouts, The Firm is my favorite and I have tried many of them. I definitely incorporate them into my workout routine because they Rock!

Hi Everyone! I'm excited about starting C2 this Sunday. I have recently purchased a bench and some dumbbells (5-20lbs). This week, I did a "practice run" of some of the exercises and the bench works GREAT for the Upper body exercises, but I definitely need some additional ideas for the lower body since the BFL book lower body exercises require machines (most of them). Also, if you could recommend some indoor cardio tapes, that would be wonderful! I work 12 hrs a day and wake up at 430am for the exercises, so its still pretty dark out, otherwise, I like to walk/jog for my HIIT. Please help!!
Body for Life Forum Message by fitnesscrazedmom (59 posts) at 09:06 PM
Sands, I usually don't use any machines for my lower body. I do squats, lunges, deadlifts and standing calf raises holding diff. weight dumbbells. As for cardio tapes, I don't like many of them but I do like Tae Bo, I work up one heck of a sweat and it makes you feel strong. HOpe this helps!
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (294 posts) at 10:08 PM
The best overall exercises for the lower body are squats, lunges, deadlifts, and calf raises. You can do all those with free weights and you don't need machines. Just be careful about form, as it is fairly easy to get the form wrong and injure the back.
Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (102 posts) at 10:08 PM
For LBWO exercises with dumbells, I also do squats, lunges, deadlifts, and calf raises. Lunges have different variations - forward, backwards, diagonal, walking, etc. You can also step up onto the bench while holding weights. Also for legs, there's an exercise where you have one foot on top of a bench behind you, and you bend your other knee while holding weights. Not sure what this exercise is called.
You may also want to buy an exercise ball (very inexpensive). You can do tons of leg exercises with that.
For exercise video, I was actually looking into purchasing Turbo Jam (from infomercials). Looks challenging.
Good luck!

I do all my workouts at home! I do lunges, squats, deadlifts, calf raises. I do all these with dumbbells. I usually ride my stationary bike for my cardio. I use the Audio TimeKeeper CD's for my cardios and workouts.

Keep in mind that it's not only the scale that matters when losing. I only lost 12.5 lbs my first challenge, but you can look at my profile and see I lost a LOT more in inches than I did in lbs.
It will take time, but YOU CAN DO IT! PM me if you have any questions, I've talked to several people about thyroid issues.

I used Dr.Natura's stuff last summer and I loved it! I suffered with IBS for years and it was a relief to have "normal" movements daily. Yes, I did go a few times a day. Yes, it was alot. No, it did not hurt. No, it wasn't the runs. I felt thinner through the waist. I never had that sudden urge and had to run. It was always like "Oh, I think I need to have a movement" and I would gingerly walk to the restroom. I did see a few things that were scary but soon I would just glance just to see if I would need a plunger. I had a great experience with it and it's worth the money. I'm actually wanting to do it again!

Why don't non-BFLers get it though? I ended up having a massive e-mail heated debate about me spending soo much time in the gym and working things out around exercise and eating. They were basically mocking me that i'd managed to not have a drink for the whole of January. Trying to explain to people who have never really tried dieting and intense exercise to create the body they want is pretty hard.

So, sorry if I went off on a tangent. And, I WON'T eat cheeseburgers anymore. I think that experience was the last because not only did I feel bad emotionally, but my stomach hurt!

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (512 posts) at 12:36 PM
Actually treadmill HIIT workouts are great prep for a 5k. Just keep pushing your 10's. I used to run about 25 min for a 5k (I usually train specifically for the marathon so I wasn't doing much speedy running) but since starting BFL my personal record is down to 21:50. Do some 1 minute repeats at about 9mph, then jog til you heart rate goes back down. I do 9mph for my 9's and 10's. My "jogging" pace is 7.2.... which is probably about how fast you are running your 5k. So start at that pace and then throw in some faster running when you feel like it. You will be amazed how fast you will see improvement.

I love music & I always assign songs to my life...each of my children has a song chosen for them...
So I chose a song for this challenge "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. When I feel cravings I sing the song to the bad food & I get past it...sometimes I throw in alittle dance...
So yesterday McDonald's was on my mind since I woke up (don't know why)...by midday I couldn't take it anymore & decided to give in...
I kid you not...as soon as I turned into McDonald's driveway guess what song comes on the radio..."I Will Survive"...
Now I use to never believe in coincidences until I learned the true meaning of the word a year ago...
Coincidence means to "co-incide"...things that are meant to happen at the same exact time!
Needless to say, I can't sing with a mouth full of food...so I decided to drive away & sing my song...it was like my world is supporting me...
I was so excited...I didn't go back...no McD's for me...
So if you had to give your challenge a song, which one would it be & why?

For me....."You've Got Another Thing Coming" by Judas Priest
Hold life, I'm gonna live it up
I'm taking flight, I said I'll never give it up
Stand tall, I'm a-young and kinda proud
I'm on the top as long as the music's loud
If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinking like a fool, cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waiting to be had
If you think I'll let it go, you're mad
You've got another thing coming
You've got another thing coming
That's right, here's where the talking ends
Listen mister next there'll be some action spent
Drive hard, calling all the shots
I've got an ace car coming down the road
If you think I'll sit around while they chip away my brain
Listen, I ain't fooling, and you'd better think again
Out there is a fortune waiting to be had
You think I'll let it go, you're mad
You've got another thing coming
You've got another thing coming
You've got another thing coming
In this world we're living here
We have our share of sorrows
The answer now is don't give in
To any foreign use of power
Oh so hot, no time to take a rest, Yeah
There just ain't room for second best
Real strong, got me some security
I have a big smash, I'm going for infinity, Yeah
If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinking like a fool, cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waiting to be had
You think I'll let it go, you're mad
You've got another thing coming
You've got another thing coming
Have a FANTASTIC BFL day.

I don't really have a life song, but my BFL song right now is Daniel Bedingfield's Gotta Get Through This :) I listen to it when I'm hitting my last 8, 9 and 10 during my HIIT cardio! The lyrics are perfect and the tempo is exactly right for my final push!
If only I could get through this
get through this
I just, I just said, I just, said..
I gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta make, gotta make it, gotta make it through
Said I'm gotta get through this
I'm gotta get through this
I gotta take, gotta take my mind off you
Give me just a second and I'll be all right
Surely one more moment couldn't break my heart
Give me 'til tomorrow then I'll be okay

this has always been "my song"
Forgive me father, for I have sinned
I've been through hell and back again
I shook hands with the devil
Looked 'im in the eye
Looked like a long lost friend
anything you want, any dirty deeds
He's got everything 'cept what I really need
Keepin' me temporarily satisfied
But not one thing I've tried
Filled me up inside or felt like mine
Mine all mine
Yeah, the search goes on
The more I look, my world keeps gettin' smaller
Staring at the sun, searchin' for the light
Almost ended up blind Some only see what they wanna see
Claiming victory, oh but that's not me
Gimme truth, gimme somethin' real
I just wanna feel like it's mine all mine
All the words on the wall look the same in the mirror
Every riddle and every clue
Ow, you've got Allah in the east
You've got Jesus in the west
Christ, what's a man to do?
They'll find a cure for anything
Just kill the pain or numb my brain
We see a man speakin' the word of God
Provin' to be a fraud. his own church applauds
Stop lookin' out, start lookin' in
Be your own best friend
Stand up and say "Hey! This is mine!"

Has anyone seen the new Nike "Awake" ad? Background music is AC/DC's "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," and so the driving guitar riffs create the mood. I swear I cried when I saw it the first time, because right away when I saw that it was dark outside - I KNEW what the message was. I felt like one of them, getting out of bed when it's still dark outside because I'm committed to this, dammit!
I can't see the Quiktime piece from this computer, but here's a website that refers to the ad:

So here I am in the end of week 9 challenge 2 and I cannot remember the last time I had a clean week. A clean day? Yes. Clean week....uh no. How's my progress you ask? None. Haven't gained (within a pound of two) haven't lost. I continue to progress at the gym and degress in the kitchen. I no longer journal and haven't since around the 11th week of challenge 1. I plan to get back to business for challenge 3 but can't seem to get myself up to doing it now.
My question? How common is this for the second challenge? Let me know what you went through and how it affected your third challenge. I recall reading (maybe Flower said it??) that the second challenge didn't yield the greatest results.
Body for Life Forum Message by crone (662 posts) at 10:53 AM
That was me to a tee. I at least once a day I had something I wasn't suppose to have. But I faithfully worked out at the gym. Didn't gain or lose stayed the same. But now I am in C3 and I am eating clean and workingout. I lost 2lbs in 4 weeks. But I'm working at it.
Body for Life Forum Message by FitForGood (55 posts) at 11:13 AM
Challenge 2 was a definite "challenge" and progress was a lot slower than during the first. I didn't take a break between them and maybe that would have helped. I was definitely more focused during the first one than during the second one. So far #3 is going better than #2. Whether it's going to be the charm remains to be seen. But you can add me to that list.
For me personally I think the 12 week time frame worked against me. Even though realistically I knew it would take more than 12 weeks to get back to where I want to be, for some reason getting to that "finish" line without getting to my goals seemed to trip me up. After my first two kids I just did it until I was done. The first time took over a year, second time took a year, and this time will too.
Body for Life Forum Message by ThirdTry (7 posts) at 11:35 AM
My second challenge was not very productive I did not have the drive or focus of my first challenge. It started off pretty good but I slowly lost motivation. I took a couple of months off (still working out and trying to eat decent) and gained several pounds then decided it was time to get back into it.
I know the reward of a challenge is getting in shape, feeling better about yourself and being healthier but for my third challenge I decided to put another carrot out there for myself. I decided I if I do the whole challenge giving 100% and not cheating then I would buy something for myself that I normally would not get; if I slipped at all the reward would be cancelled. So far so good, I’m coming to the end of my third week and this has been the best challenge so far. I figure the money I’m saving in beer/eating out over 12 weeks will go a long way towards my reward…
Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (80 posts) at 11:38 AM
I think the 12 wk. time frame trips me up to. Seems I can get to the 84th day and say I am going to take a week off but that usually turns into many weeks off. I have decided that in addition to my 12 week goals, I need goals that go beyond that so I actually get back on track after a short break. I make great progress and then slide all the way back to the beginning. Talk about self sabatoge!
Body for Life Forum Message by De (4 posts) at 12:41 PM
I'm ending my 4th week of my challenge. I hear many talking about a "break" before starting their next challenge. Is it recommended to take a break? I know that I have another challenge ahead of me and I just want to be prepared. Does my body need a break to gain results in my second challenge?
Body for Life Forum Message by FitForGood (55 posts) at 01:01 PM
I didn't want to stop completely between 2 & 3, but I knew I was kind of burned out going straight from 1 to 2. For a break this time I took a couple weeks and did steady state cardio - no HIIT. I did weights but not the BFL routine. I still tried to eat fairly healthy and still time the meals every 3 hours, because I just feel better when my blood sugars don't swing all over the place. But, I ate my kid's birthday cakes with no guilt. I ate what I wanted when out to dinner on vacation with no guilt. This kind of break worked for me and I feel much more motivated with BFL after doing this and was anxious to restart.

I am only in week 4 of of Challenge 2 and only down about 4 pounds...BUT...my first challenge was the way you describe your challenge 2. I just lost motivation by the end and slipped up. THen wondered why I didn't have great results.
So far I have stayed on track, except for one day this week that I didn't get my workout in. Still clean eating.
I am hoping that my Challenge 2 is like a re-do though! :0
Good luck.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2334 posts) at 01:22 PM
Well I've made alot of statements & claims thats for sure. First of all I really think I'm a bit "different". I don't seem to make steady progress like I see alot of people do - no 1 lb a week thing for me. Seems I can go weeks with nothing then, wham I notice changes. I was probably my leanest by the end of C2 but that brought me into full summer party fun. I did find by C3 it had become "old hat" and slip ups weren't such a big deal.
Here's another example of how I'm "different". The vast majority recommend the week off - that DOES NOT work for me. For example, I went home for one week in the summer and I ran almost every day. I won't get into the gory details but I went all out on the eating and my appetite is notorious. I gained 5 - 7 lbs which would be mostly water right? Most people would go back to eating good and loose it within 7 - 10 days right? Nope, not me - it NEVER EVER came off!!!!! And I've been adding since then. I changed programs after this and like to think it was stored fuel for the massive muscles I put on!!!! ha, ha
Have you thought about a bit of a change? I tried it for a few months, had some muscle & fat gain and am now back to doing BFL for another 12 weeks. Maybe you need a bit of a chenge? Hate to say it but the biggest changes will come from diet. In one year I don't know if I had an alcohol free weekend; I don't even think its the alcohol thats bad, its the junk food cravings that go with it. Its Friday afternoon, by now I would have done junk food grocery shopping & stocked up on the alcohol - this very well may be my first alcohol free weekend (just watch, I'm going to be a BFL star LOL).
Has the exercise part become easy/enjoyable? But the eating part is a constant struggle? You just want to be somewhat normal? The odd bite here & there can actually screw everything up? Body for Life's-a bitch???
At this point which is now a year even me being a slow progressor I do notice changes that weren't there even when I was 10 lbs thinner. I come from the mindset that there is no such thing as "too skinny" so I'm trying to look at each body part individually instead of the "whole larger package" - there's definately changes looking at it that way. This took alot longer than I thought and was alot of hard work and its still not done.
Keep going Deb!

FOCUS!!!!! This is the reason that C2 was not productive. Can a race car driver do the race like we do a Sunday drive looking out the window at all the pretty scenary and pullig over to take pictures. Same with the secound challenge. You know pretty well what to eat how far to push on the weights and PLANNING goes out the window. Because you were not hungry you miss a meal and that opens up all the cravings for the next meal and BAM 1/2 pack of Oreos down with a tall glass of milk for the "protein". The workouts become mediocre becasue you can't quite remember your last workout weights and you finish with a "That was OK" rather then "WOW I LOVED THAT 10!" If the challenge gets to the point that it is Easy it is by default not a CHALLENGE but a Sunday drive. In the second Challenge it is most important to maintain FOCUS with PLANNING and RECORDING so you can build on progress and then add something else as a goal to accomplish like a 5K or a reward and then keep the FOCUS on that goal and evaluate every week with mesurements where you are and what you need to do to accomplish your goal.
IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO SUNDAY DRIVE THE NEXTEL CUP AND EXPECT TO COME OUT A WINNER!
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (549 posts) at 03:09 PM
I can say that when I'm in the gym, I'm all business. I consistantly challenge myself (even though a knee injury has prevented me from running), I switch my routine up every few workouts and always up my weights as soon as I'm able to hit 12 reps without "makin' the face" on my 6th set. I do a minimum of 40 minutes of cardio on lift days and as much as 75 minutes of cardio on my cardio days including hitting my 10. Again...my issues are food ones. Binge issues mostly. I know exactly why I have them. I work so hard but haven't seen the results that one needs to recharge the will power. And those damn Reeses are so freakin' good!!! I want to personally thank you Flower. You have made me realize what I've been doing wrong!!!! I will write more as soon as I get back from the liquor store.

I realized why challenge 2 is so difficult for me just the other day. No.1 like was stated earlier...is you have to plan. I went right out and bought another journal. I make myself do it every night. But the other thing that is hard is mental. Now that I know it I can consiously fight it. The problem is the gym routine is soo much harder. I started lifting weights that I have lifted before. Now I am in uncharted territory with challenge 2. My brain says you can't lift that. Then my body has to agree. Everyday I have to set my mind to it, FOCUS, and remember why I am doing this. I found a picture of an awsome looking body. I emailed it to myself and look at it everyday.
Hope that helps

I need help. The chart of the Accu-measure body fat tester stops at the low end of 2-3mm for men at age 50 or above. I am just over 50 and my % body fat measures at 1.5mm. What would my % body fat be? Does anyone know? the % body fat between 2-3mm is 7.7%.

I'm sorry to disagree but I would definitely avoid the handheld BF analyzers. Everything I have researched on these points to extremely unreliable numbers. They are easy, portable, and noninvasive, but highly inaccurate.
(I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the TAnita BF scales, or the BIA method in general)They are just so many varibles involved with BIA that can affect your reading in a big way (dehyration, food, exercise...can all effect it)
I think you are bettter off getting your BF measured at a gym by someone TRAINED to use calipers. Then keep going back to that same person. Trust me, it makes a difference. It is so hard to maesure yourself and consistently get an accurate reading...
As far as your specific problem, since you are just over 50, would it help to go down an age group?
You look amazing, by the way. Great work...

I'm posting this towards the end of Week 3. At the start of the week I was going strong at BFL, perfect eating, mentally focused, you name it. Then came the good news...I managed to land a job interview for the position of Police Officer this coming Monday. "Woo-hoo" I thought, one of my long term goals at last.
Since then I've been running around getting numerous things sorted for it, and BFL has kind of taken the back burner. I haven't missed a session yet, or cheated on any meals, but I've only been hitting 4 meals most days and to cap it all off took my free day mid-week which left me feeling terrible (now I know what that "food hangover" feels like).
Anyway, I am determined to get back on track and was just wondering if anyone else felt like this and can offer some words of motivation :) I know I should be harnessing this positive pressure, but I feel I need a kick in the butt!
Body for Life Forum Message by JT5280 (1 posts) at 02:48 PM
Good for you reaching a goal! Why did you change your free day, peer pressure? A BFL bar is small enough to have with you all the time, don't skip a meal carry several bars with you for that just in case.

Congratulations, Ryan!
Remember that stress is still stress, whether it comes from a positive or negative source. One of the benefits of any sort of disciplined lifestyle such as BFL is it teaches you how to maintain certain habits - and subsequently a 'center' of your being - during any situation. It's a learning process to harness the energy of either the positive or negative things life throws at us so don't be too hard on yourself if you feel a bit out of control.
Just take a deep breath, and get back to the baby steps if you feel overwhelmed by your good fortune right now. What one thing can you do today, utilizing the energy and enthusiasm brought about by this interview, will get you closer to your BFL goals? This is part of the process because stress is part of life, so use your creative energy to make new strategies to deal with these things. And enjoy!
Congratulations again.

Ryan, congrats on being hired by the Police force!
What helps me is that this thing is not about 12 weeks or 72 workouts. It's about the next meal, the next workout. Do I decide to eat the right thing or not. Do I make it to the gym or not. I make a choice. I live with it. Then I move on. It helps to make the right choice a lot of times in a row!
When you feel this way, remember your determination, and eat correctly or get to the gym!
Good luck with your new job and on your BFL journey!
Tom

OK, First of all I love this site and enjoy reading all of your posts !!
I need some ammo...my roommate and I are doing BFL and neither of us has really lost any scale weight...we are just finishing up our 3rd week...I know it takes time and I have tried to convince her to hang in there and give it some time but she is becoming very discouraged...I have tried to explain the reasons why from what I have learned on here etc but I am not sure she is buying it :(
I told her most women take 5 weeks before anything really happens but I don't know what else to do...I don't want her to give up on me.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated..Thanks !!

You can always be like
"How will you ever know it's gonna work if you give up?"
Tell her to concentrate on how much better she is feeling, eating, working out. How much more energy she is feeling. Concentrate on the inner transformation and before you know it the outer transformation is happening.
Work hard, workout even HARDER!-T

As always, there has been a lot of frustration voiced concerning a lack of visible changes, the scale won’t move, etc. So I thought this might be a nice read for any frustrated newbies. Feel free to ignore this, if you have read it already. It's always a nice reminder for me, though...
(This is by Bob White. I copied this off the guestbook a few years back)
Let’s assume you go out and buy two rolls of paper towels, each with only 84 paper towels on it (one for each day of the challenge). You put one aside, and keep it for future reference (your “before” picture). The other one represents you (I’ll call your paper towel you “Ed”). The core represents the lean Ed. The towels represent the fat that is covering the lean Ed.
For sake of argument, let’s say that Ed wants to lose 21 pounds of fat, so (84/21) each sheet represents a quarter-pound of fat lost. Let’s also assume that Ed loses his fat equally during each day of the challenge.
Each day during the first week, you tear a sheet off of Ed, representing the fat he has lost for the day. Next, you put Ed next to the full roll (“Big Al”) for comparison. No noticeable difference!!! Even at the end of the week! This can’t be working for me! But, being a good Ed, you continue to follow Body-for-LIFE. At the end of weeks two and three, you continue to compare Ed to Big Al, and still notice very little difference. That Bi11 Phi11lips MUST be joking!
But Ed is determined! He works hard! Hitting his 10’s…eating his six daily meals. Three more weeks go by, the sheets peeling off day after day, before Ed gets up the courage to stand next to Big Al again. Holy Myoplex! Ed is skinny! OK, not skinny, but less huge!!!
By the end of the 12-week Body-for-LIFE program, Ed is down to his lean dream, or somewhere near it. Ed is happy. We are happy. Big Al - well, he’s not so happy.
The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around. And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area - just like that outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area.
While the outside sheet may only cover one layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the same - your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!
Hope this helps any poor, frustrated soul out there :) …keep pushin’ it, y’all. ~~ashli~~

Hi All
I just wanted to update you on progress at the end of week 3. Eating and food during the week was very good. At times I think there is too much food to eat especially in the evening.
As far as the workouts were concerned, I completed them all though they got very hard towards the end of the week. I have also played 4 games of squash this week all probably lasting more than 1 hr and I think that this has taken its toll. On Friday it was my second UBWO of the week and I had a lot less energy than usual, I reached the 10s but wasn’t able to complete all of the reps on each exercise. I also played squash Friday evening and suffered the same lack of energy; my game just was not there. I am not completely sure what to do, I really enjoy paying squash and do not want to give it up or even reduce the amount of game I play, and you cannot play an uncompetitive game of squash. Any ideas?
So to the results of the week
Weight loss – nil (this was a bit of a shock)
Measurements – lost a further inch of my waist (this was also a shock after the zero weight loss)
Body fat – down to 25.8 from 27.4 last week and 31 at the start of the challenge
Photographs – this was also a bit of a shock especially the back photograph, if this was someone else I would not believe there was no difference in weight – just goes to show scales are rubbish
My body fat target remains on track, the weight loss target has stalled a little but hopefully it will kick in later in the challenge.
All in all after three weeks its still working and I feel great. It’s my free day today and I’m looking forward to a few beers to celebrate.
Good luck with all of your challenges.
Mark

Mark, Congrats! Great progress.
I can't specifically address squash, but what I would suggest is that you are just in the third week and you need to let your body catch up to what you are trying to do to it. I would suggest continuing to play squash. I know that I have much more energy now than when I started. It'll come back to you.
Enjoy the beer!

Mark! Do you know how many people on here would give their left eye for the body fat loss you've experienced in three weeks?!? The overall weight loss is NOT the issue here! Would you PUH-LEEZ celebrate the fact that you've LOST nearly 13 pounds of fat and GAINED nearly 6 pounds of lean mass?!?!?!!!
There's LOADS more here to celebrate beyond the fact that you've reached your free day. Oh, and fine -- if you want the beers, have at 'em. But I think they're going to set you back.
Sorry - just a bit of frustration because I'm not feelin' that you recognize what success you've had already!! Maybe you do see it...but let's hear you ROAR!!

HOW TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS AND DREAMS IN 2006 AND BEYOND
1. Vision - Despite anything your mind may be telling you isn't possible, have a vision of what 2006 can be for you. Forget about 'realistic' thinking and just 'dream big.' Take a few moments to make list of everything you want to achieve this Year.
2. Believe - You have to believe that your dreams and goals are possible. Because anything is possible if you believe it is so!! There will be people somewhere who will make the exact same goals and dreams that you have written down become realities in their lives. You Too Can Be One Of Those Peoples who has turn their goals and dreams into realities!!! But you have to believe in yourself, and you have to believe that it is possible!!!! And It Is Possible!!! You Can Do It!!!
3. Passion - You need a passion to do whatever it takes to attain your goals. To help you to understand this point, think of a time in your life when you had enough of a consistent, passionate desire for something that you did whatever it took to get it. Perhaps it was an improvement in your view of the world. Maybe you wanted to get in shape. Maybe you wanted to excel at some sport. That's what you need! Passion is the key ingredient here. Not just today, but tomorrow, next week...consistently! (In fact, let me give you an ABC of success: Always Be Consistent.)
4. Willingness - If you truly have a passionate desire, willingness to do what it takes is not an issue at all, and is even obvious. It's still worth mentioning that you have to be willing to consistently do whatever it takes to reach your goals.
Have a wonderful day!!!! I Love You All!!!

well, 2 teaspoons is a little over 9 grams...so 2 grams would be about .421 teaspoons...looks like you OD'ed a bit....

When I used it I took 1/2 teaspoon, and I didn't have any bad side effects. We're about the same size (well, you're a little smaller!), so I'd try that dose to start off with.
