It gets loose before it tightens up again. You will go through several stages of this in your fat loss. As my workout partner who is a trainer says "you will look worse before you look better". So I get excited when I look a little flabby and mushy lol.

Ive been fighting a cold/sinus infection or somethign of the sorts for 3 weeks. I cant afford to take the time off, Im afraid I'll resort to the bad eating habits again. However, this week it moved into my chest, along with my sinuses, so I am taking off just cardio and doing pilates instead. I cant hardly breathe as it is. I am still doing the regular workouts and eating good. Hope this helps, and hope you get to feeling better! xoxo Karen

Thread: Good News or Irresponsible Journalism? (171 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (811 posts) at 08:58 AM: Good News or Irresponsible Journalism?
Many of you may have heard about the results of the new study that concludes that low fat diets don't protect women against some diseases.

Here's the article in today's Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/07/AR2006020701681.html

"Low-fat diets do not protect women against heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer or colon cancer, a major study has found, contradicting what had once been promoted as one of the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle."

What they don't say is, well, a lot.  How about diabetes or obesity?  And the study was done on post-menopausal women.  And they don't quite make the differentiation between the kinds of fat they're talking about.  Or whether the women studied also incorporate exercise and other healthy habits into their lives.

I've got a lot of problems with how this study is being reported.  Take this, for example, buried deep in the article:  "Women on the low-fat diet did have 9 percent fewer breast cancers, but researchers could not be sure that difference was not the result of chance. There were other encouraging hints, however, including signs that women who were consuming the most fat when the study began, or those prone to certain types of tumors, may benefit, especially if they were followed longer."

I also wonder how many people are going to read the headline and the first paragraph and use it to justify their fat-consuming ways.

So, what do you make of all this?

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1310 posts) at 09:02 AM:
The thing about low-fat is it does not exclude sugar. The low-fat craze sometime back was believed to be so great but all those low-fat products had tons of sugar and processed junk which contribute to those diseases. Hmmm maybe I should go read the rest of the article lol... brb

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (811 posts) at 09:04 AM:
Exactly! My tablespoon of flax seed oil at night is not the same as a Krispy Kreme donut. And this article doesn't really describe the difference.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (404 posts) at 09:08 AM:
Correct! In addition to TNT's mention of sugar, the essential fats are not distinguished as such, and people drawn to the low-fat diet syndrome do not realize or understand or choose to ignore that they still need fats in their diets.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1310 posts) at 09:09 AM:
OK yes they are talking about eliminating or lowering fat. They don't discuss eliminating sugars/ processed food/ etc... just lowering the fat. Which this is no break through many people have known this. Though if you are not in the know of stuff I could see how someone could take this as well Fat is GREAT for me. Of course we can all take something we read and turn it into the reason "WHY" we can do something. Or feel justified in our actions. This wold be one of those articles that left out a lot of the big picture...and focused on 1 thing low-fat. If I was just your average Jane reading this I would not see the big picture. I would think oh wow low-fat is bad. Etc... so yes it is a bit sloppy in it's delivery. But most journalism today is. Esp. on diet and exercise.

Fat is good for you:)

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (159 posts) at 09:59 AM:
I was alarmed and worried when I read the headline too. Afraid the obese population would say, "oh well, they keep changing the rules, I don't know what to do." and then give up. Lifestyle is killing people and it includes processed foods, empty calories, (white bread etc.) sugars of every kind and lumps all fats in the same category. We know that it is about quantity of QUALITY foods and when they are eaten. It's time for them to do studies on powerfoods. Quality and the amount. the low/no fat craze caused Americans to gain weight. Why? Because they assumed if it was FAT Free...it was a big FREEBIE...EAT IT TILL YOU DROP. Even our very nutrient rich foods are not Free for alls. We are combining the right foods in the right quantities. the medical experts know this. Why do they do studies trying to eliminate one food?

Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (349 posts) at 02:42 PM:
OH GOOD GOD this is all over Fox News. Why dont we provide some more information to confuse the hell out of the general public even more!!! More excuses to be okay with obesity is my opinion...ugh.

Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (41 posts) at 03:22 PM:
I guess I've been fortunate; I've seen really good coverage of this. The NY Times article was exceptionally clear about the fact that the study didn't distinguish between types of fats, as this study began well before the current research about trans-fats and sat fats vs. good fats. Also, one of the doctors mentioned that Americans need to reevaluate their focus on food--that they need to realize that it's not what we eat but how much we eat that's the problem. I like studies like this. First, it illuminates the fact that "diets" are pointless and not healthy. Anything that draws a big red X over an entire food group isn't considering the big picture of health. Second, it's good information. Eating processed low-fat whatever *isn't* healthy and we need to stop letting the food industry pretend it is. Anything that moves the idea of good nutrition towards recognizing more whole foods and less chemically-created ones is awesome in my book.

Body for Life Forum Message by Shauna (24 posts) at 01:17 PM: Mongolian BBQ???????
OK, so I'm wondering how healthy Mongolian BBQ is? I went there last night and had a bowl of veggies, shaved meat and chicken, went really light on sauce and oil and of course skipped the soup, fried rice and egg rolls. Washed it all down with 3 glasses of water. I would really like to put it on my list of approved meals, but thought I'd check in with my fellow trackers...any thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (404 posts) at 01:34 PM:
Unless you know the ingredients they are cooking the veggies, meat and chicken with or know all of the ingredients in the sauce, I would personally save it for free day. Just my opinion....I am sure fellow trackers can add or modify what I am suggesting or may have different opinions.

Thread: Why Myoplex?? (93 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by LisaMichele (73 posts) at 09:08 AM: Why Myoplex??
I was reading back over several topics and it seems as though people are mostly drinking Myoplex shakes. Why? Why not the Body for Life shakes? Do the Myoplex ones taste better? What's your take? What are the benifets to the different shakes on the market. I am looking for fat loss mostly, but I still want to build muscle. So do I look for a shake that has less calories or the one the has the most protien? Thanks! LisaMichele

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (404 posts) at 09:13 AM:
Then you need to drink Myoplex Lite vs. regular Myoplex if you are achieving optimal fat loss. Body for Life shakes have a higher sugar content.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (122 posts) at 09:16 AM:
Also, the BFL shakes have a lot less protein...just 15 grams versus 24 or 25 for Myoplex Lite. I can't stand Myoplex myself (they taste a lot different than the BFL shakes, which I like), so I whip up my own shakes using protein powder.

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (71 posts) at 09:16 AM:
im using MyoPro (now called EAS 100% Whey)

Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (42 posts) at 09:47 AM:
Yeah, basically the BFL shakes/bars are more of a mass-market less expensive alternative. The Myoplex is a superior product with higher quality proteins, carbs, etc. and like nola said, more protein so better balanced. So with as serious as I am about building my body I opted for the Myoplex. But, I do occasionally get teh BFL stuff because they are cheap and I kind of think of the bars as my "candy". :o) You can check out the content of Myoplex vs. BFL at bodybuilding.com

Body for Life Forum Message by tgantt (34 posts) at 10:28 AM:
Minka, I have seen MyoPro. What is the difference? I am thinking of getting it. Thanks Tiff

Myopro is just protein powder, whereas Myoplex is a meal replacement - protein, carbs, vitamins, minerals, fat, etc.

Body for Life Forum Message by motiv8me (230 posts) at 04:00 PM: expiry date on powder
My Myoplex powder is waaaaaaaaaaaay past it's expiry date, mostly because I didn't know it had one! But yesterday, after drinking a shake, I started to feel, um, yucky, so I wondered if it was the shake. When I looked for an expiry date, I saw 2002!!! Eeks! So my questoin is, why is there an expiry date? What is expiring? Is the powder no longer good or effective, or both? Is that why I felt yucky, or was it just coincidence??? Again, this is not the ready-made shake, just the powder.

Body for Life Forum Message by motiv8me (230 posts) at 04:57 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (811 posts) at 04:59 PM:
Yuck! Maybe it's how the chemicals and other ingredients might break down and interact? Anyway, I'd definitely toss the powder and buy new stuff.

Body for Life Forum Message by TNT's-MOM (375 posts) at 05:13 PM:
I don't really know but if it has an expiration date of 2002 definatly toss it...call EAS for the particulars on how they come up with their exp dates. Just a good idea to not eat anything that is out of date by 4 years...eeek. after reading the threads about colon cleansing if you drink it it may qualify and not in a good way! LOL so toss it and buy new.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1310 posts) at 05:38 PM:
Because it is engineered food. AS with any type of food basically it's nutritional value is obsolete after it's shelf life. And even more so with engineered food such as MRB and shakes. Yes, def. buy some new stuff. I just tossed some from a few years ago as well.

I know someone that had it done, but she had so much scar tissue that it wasn't able to be completed. Sorry, I don't know how much it cost, but I do believe her insurance plan covered it as a method of sterilization.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (404 posts) at 08:57 AM:
My insurance plan just covered my tubal last October after the birth of my son. You may want to check with them. I did inquire about the Essure procedure, but there were no gains or drawbacks in particular over the tubal according to my physician.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (443 posts) at 09:28 AM:
I was looking into alternatives to a tubal because: 1. This seems less invasive. I'm not a big fan of laparoscopy, including the cutting/cauterization involved in a tubal. 2. I work for doctors. Thread: diet soda question (101 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1150 posts) at 07:51 AM: diet soda question

It appears that information on diet soday is inconclusive in terms of the health problems or benefits.  does anyone have research based information on the negatives or positives of diet soda

Body for Life Forum Message by Tracy06BFL (55 posts) at 08:06 AM:
From Jerry Braam's website.. Soda on days besides a free day? I'm sure you already know that answer! As for DIET soda. That is a common question. The use of DIET on the label often confuses people. Just because it has lower calories doesn't mean that it is okay to ingest. Both Soda & Diet Soda have many factors that will severley stunt your best BFL results. Minus the obvious with reg soda...Things to consider with diet are sodium, caffeine, carbonation, etc... ~Sodium of course you are aware that sm. amounts of sodium dramatically increase water retention may you look and fell bloated=crappy. ~Caffeine has been researched for years! I read that it was fine in moderation. But also remember that it does have diuretic effects& may cause dehydration, so always drink a glass of water for every diet soda or cup-o-coffee. The positive that it may help increase energy for a training session. ~ Carbonated Now I have read that carbonated soft drinks are high in phosphorus. Phosphorus appears to compete with many nutrients, vitiamins and minerals. But mostly calcium for bone, thereby limiting its absorption; in other words, bone loss may be greater than bone maintenance and/or formation, so that net bone density/mass would be less than optimal. This is particularly negative for women's health because of osteoporosis ingredients. Best puposes for soda... ~To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coke into the toilet. Let it sit for one hour, then flush clean. ~To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coke. ~To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. ~To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coke to the rusted bolt for several minutes. There is no better replacement for water than water. You need water to sustain your body's many vital chemical reactions and maintain correct body temperature. Water also rehydrates you because water is lost as perspiration (and expired air), and this can lead to dehydration if fluids are not replaced. Another plus -- drinking water before and during physical activity can enhance your athletic performance. If you have to ingest diet soda. Try to keep it to a minimum. Find healthy alternatives. I especially enjoy adding "DIET" Crystal Light (Peach Tea) to my water arsenal. What are your personal water tips!

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscles_Marinara (48 posts) at 08:45 AM:
Nothing against Jerry, by any means.. But that's more of an opinion.. And everyone knows that the citric acid in soda will remove rust :) Personally, I drank tons of Diet Pepsi, and I can GUARANTEE that starting Monday, in c2, I will continue, and I will get the same dramatic results that I got last time. You should still drink your gallon-ish of water a day, though :)

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1150 posts) at 09:12 AM:
I know those ingredients but what about the others... and what about artificial sweeteners?? Yes results are number one but can it hinder results if you drank three a day. That is a question I am not sure about

Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (1014 posts) at 10:21 AM:
Honestly, I don't think its that bad, but for me, personally, I don't drink it during the week because it affects my breathing. I think its because of the carbonation. Ingesting the carbon dioxide or whatever it is that makes the fizz. If I drink my beloved Diet Coke and then the next day try to do a HIIT, I feel like my breathing capacity is diminished. Saying you shouldn't becuase of the caffeine is just silly, Hello, what do you think is in the "fatburners"!! LOL I also think the aspartame is bad, and it does have a cumulative effect, but a little in moderation is not going to kill you. Pounding down a 64 ouncer every day, thats a different story. I've found now that I cut it out during the week (pretty much) I can't drink more than 1 glass of DC(like at a restaurnat)where I used to put down a 2 liter in a day and a half regularly.

I'm watching Biggest Loser and I often wonder which trainer I would choose. I often think I'd like Bob, because he's more touchy/feely and Jillian   is more hard . . . then I think that just means I need to take Jillian  because she'd get me out of my comfort zone.

Who would you pick?

Any idea if one has more success than the other? I can't remember after the fact who had which trainer.

Thread: Treadmill HIIT- What's Yours? (365 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by MelJ113074 (29 posts) at 05:33 AM:
Well I'm happy to announce that I have picked up my pace and intensity. Now I do 3.5 (for some reason I can't do 4.0 anymore),4.5,5.0,5.5 and 6.0 for my 10. So close to 2 miles in 20min. That has just become one of my new goals. Oh yeah my incline is set at 1.0 also. It's so strange to hear me say this, but I enjoy being on the treadmill. Soon I'm hoping to do 4.5,5.0,5.5,6.0 and 6.5 for my 10. I think I'll need another week for that though. The only thing that drives me crazy is the cal burned part. I notice since I'm losing weight I'm not burning as many calories. I mean it's not much, but it's still getting less and less. I guess that's another good reason to up that MPH and get those cal burned off. So how are other's progressing? Melissa

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (359 posts) at 07:49 AM:
I do 2 miles in about 19:20 and here is my workout: 2-5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, four times and then minute 18 is at 7.5. I have started making adjustments to get my mileage up there, like for the minutes at 7.0, sometimes I will do 30 seconds at 7.0 and 30 seconds at 7.5. For my "10" I will run 7.5 for 30 seconds, 8.0 for 30 seconds and then maybe 8.5 for 30 seconds....until I can take no more. You really will be surprised at how fast you can go if you push yourself. Just be careful and don't overdo it.

Body for Life Forum Message by MelJ113074 (29 posts) at 08:14 AM:
The thought of running at that speed makes me laugh. All I can see is me tripping and going flying off the back of the treadmill and smashing into the wall. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (24 posts) at 10:13 AM:
I love these type of threads... lets me think about what I want to eventually shoot for when I'm more fit. Currently I do 4.2, 4.5, 5.6, 5.8, 7.0 (x4) and then for my 10 I go 7.5-8.0. I hit 1.98-2 miles doing this. I hope by the end of the 12 weeks I will be able to get to 2.5-3 miles.

I use free weights only because I travel frequently for work and hotels often only have free weights and maybe a bike as a gym. So I prefer to use a routine that "travels well". I'll try teh one legged squats DreamCatcher. Thanks!

Thread: Boot Camp Type workouts (30 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by powermom (202 posts) at 09:29 AM: Boot Camp Type workouts
On Saturdays a few of us like to get together and do a boot camp/circuit type workout to change things up.  I'm just looking for some new ideas.  If anyone has any ideas to share that would be awesome.  We're always looking for new combinations.  Sometimes we use weights, sometimes we don't.  Sometimes we focus on core, other days we do upper and lower body combined. Like I said, we just like to change things up on Saturdays  - and sweat like mad!    Typically we do each exercise for 1 minute and have a 30 second rest and then continue. Depending on how many exercises we have we sometimes do the circuit 2 or 3 times.

Here is an example of one that we did a few weeks ago.

1.Jump rope (side straddle)
2. Bench Dip
3. Squat Thrust
4. Ball transfer crunch
5. kick box
6. plank
7. walking lunge with overhead press
8. Side lying scissors
9. squat with lateral raise
10. alt. knee to elbow (bicycle exercise for abs)
11 jump rope
12. back extension

Ok, increased steeping to 10 minutes last night and 1.5 scoops of fiber this morning. Smooth movement before I left for work, nothing to write home about. Didn't feel completely empty. Noticed on the way to work, there was something "a brewing" though. Not in a panic mode stuck in traffic, but will probably be taking the elevator 13 floors down to the bathroom within the next hour or so. Happy to see some kind of action.

ITS A CONSPIRACY!!!!!!Theres no such thing as a colon cleanses!! You know those pills you pay 900 bucks to buy!! The ones you have to sell your first borne to get a hold off?!?!?! Well, I hate to bust you colon but they don’t do jack!!! And you might say “ Well I craped out an E.T. looking thing just the other day so they must work!” Well I worked under cover at a colon factory..And what really happens is….They put a condensed ET in a pill and so when you eat it and grow a tail the next day and take a look at your dooky and see the little gremlin…You’ll tell all of your friends and they will all buy poop pills!! What I suggest is you buy a few prunes and kick back and let nature do its work! Don’t buy colon pills or you will go bald!

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (75 posts) at 08:01 AM:
In addition to what Tracey has listed, here are some general guidelines that seem to work for alot of people ... Water - at least a gallon per day. Portions - Cut back 15% from what they were when you were bulking up. Carbs - Avoid processed altogether. Also, try cycles of 3 days on , 3 days off where you cut out starchy carbs after 3pm ... you will need to double up on the veggies for those meals. Free Day ... keep it to one small meal only. Cardio - At least 3 times per week. Overall, pay attention to your body composition from week-to-week .... if you are losing that hard-earned muscle, then you may need to either increase your portions and/or cut back on the cardio. Good luck and I hope this helps. JS

Last year I did a srict diet the last 2 weeks (my own personal version of Hell diet I guess you could say). Here was my typical menu/workout those two weeks. 1. am cardio 45 min moderate intensity/6 egg whitess w salsa. couple tablespoons of peanut butter 2. chicken and cucumbers with vinegar. 3. Myoplex or EAS Precision Protein(Original: Myoplex is more filling if you feel your starving. 4. Lift weights/Fish (Gordon Fillets and Broccoli and/or asparagus).5. Evening brisk walk 45-60 6. Cottage Cheese 7. EAS Precision protein before bed. This wasn't fun and it wasn't prescribed by BFL but I felt it really brought out the definition I worked so hard for. That is going by memory. In a nutshell I would say reduce your carbs (especially in the evenings and increase your cardio. You probably need to toy around with different techniques and see what works for you. I read a ton of info on bodybuilding.com and went with a Spartan/Hell diet to cut up. As stated above, it does take a ton of discipline. I hope I can get my focus back that I had last year. Good luck, Kevin Hubbard "To a 'T' for Julie"

Are you sure you've lost a pound of muscle, and not just a pound of lean mass? There's a difference. Everything that is not counted in your body fat % is lean mass. That includes water, bones, water, muscles, water, blood, water, and whatever other organs and such you've got floating around in there. In other words, your lean mass is everything that isn't fat. You've probably lost water. :)

I am really looking forward to looking back on that picture from a better body. In fact, I have been eating so poorly the past 3 weeks especially that I hope the first 4 weeks shock my body back into some semblance of what I remember.

Ang-lol, it DOES look like the hulk, lol

As so many of you know bill philips has a new talk show every monday (http://www.billphillips.com/) for more info. For you who missed it and want to listen to it follow the following steps. 1. http://www.hayhouseradio.com create an account (its free) 2. Then go to http://www.hayhouseradio.com/subscribe.php?show_id=32 (thats bills archived show that was on Monday) 3. Then open your itunes. You can also configure this to automatically download all of bills shows in the future on your pc. I know all this sounds complicated, i am an accountant, not much of a tecky so apologies if i have confused you. Please feel free to contact me at anytime to explain all this further. God Bless from Cyprus Pan

Pan---I created an account from Hay House and my password wouldn't work once I was in iTunes. When you clicked the download button, did it ask you for your free hay house login id and password? I even called them up and couldn't get it fixed. They said there could be an issue with the specific download. I'll try again today. Danielle

Ok 6 weeks into this and 3 lbs and not much inches loss? What is up with this. Getting frustrated. REally exercise 6 days a week!!! More than 20 min cardio on my cardio days 40-45 min. Don't want to give up? Anybody else in this position. Is it my age?

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (102 posts) at 06:30 AM:
There are a few factors that may weigh in... Are you eating COMPLETELY clean? Are you eating 6 times a day? Your 40-45 min cardio may be too much... You need to do your HIIT 20 min cardio and allow the body to work itself into shape behind the scenes. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you hitting your 10's during weight training? And don't read into the lack of inch loss yet.. If you are doing all the correct things, your body WILL show you... May take some time, but if you are doing the right stuff, IT WILL WORK. It doesn't have a choice but to work, that is the beauty of BFL! As I have said before.. Be strong and move on!

During my first challenge, I saw all my visible/measurable progress AFTER week 8. Make sure you are eating very clean, as this is at least 80% of the equation. I would go back to HIIT cardio 3 x a week and really make every one of them count! Stay focused, committed, and most of all have faith that all your hard work is going to pay off very soon:-)

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (191 posts) at 06:41 AM:
First off, have you taken a recent progress picture? Odds are you are progressing more than you realize. For the next 48 hours carry an index card with you. EVERYTHING that goes in your mouth goes on the card. I don't care if it's a peanut or a stick of gum. Sugar free, diet soda, whatever. Make sure you also record water intake. At the end of 48 hours, plug the data into a calorie tracking program like Fitday.com. This will tell you how tight your eating is. Let's start there and see what you find.

Body for Life Forum Message by bluepulse (15 posts) at 07:41 AM:
Blempt~That is a good idea. I really like the idea of using the index card. That will help me immensely. Soccermom~Do not get discouraged. Just stick with the program and follow it (closely) Be sure you try and eat the the timed intervals..ie not after 6:00pm etc.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (443 posts) at 07:48 AM:
Sorry but I have to disagree with you bluepulse. I always eat #6 meal around 8 p.m, and I then go to bed between 9-10 p.m. However, I never eat a starchy carb like rice or potatoes in that meal. It's usually 1/2 c. of cottage cheese with cinnamon. Don't give up the small meals soccermom! You have to keep that metabolism burning 24/7.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (409 posts) at 08:50 AM:
Read this: http://hussmanfitness.org/html/TSInsideOut.html You ARE making progress, you just can't see it yet!

Body for Life Forum Message by Andrew80k (6 posts) at 08:51 AM:
Are you getting enough to eat? Often if you work out really hard and try to cut back on what you are eating you will actually cause your body to start burning muscle mass and retaining fat. You have to feed your body to lose weight. But you have to feed it right. How many calories are you getting a day? If you are eating less than 1500 calories and doing this program you are probably starving your self. That's a pretty general statement, I know, and everyone is different, but I think for most people this is probably true. While you can survive on less than 1500 calories, you probably can't lose weight and exercise at this pace on that few. You might need more. As an example, I watched my wife lose 60 pounds last year. I'm not going to mention the diet she was on, but I will say this. She worked out really hard and ate fairly well, but was really struggling to lose the weight after the birth of our second child. She has hypothyroidism and a very slow metabolism. She started this new diet plan and the weight just flew off, for a while. Then she just flatlined, couldn't make any progress. After a couple of weeks the folks helping her out increased her food intake, not by a little but by quite a bit. She started losing weight again. She was eating healthy and working out but not losing weight because she wasn't eating enough.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (409 posts) at 09:38 PM:
It's easy to get frustrated, but stick with it! And I have to second GeorgiaWendy -- eating after 6pm is fine. I eat TWO meals after 6pm every day. And Bill Phillips has addressed that theory on his eatingforlife.com site. I highly recommend reading the Q&A there.

Hi all... I have been doing this for two weeks (well, this is the 3rd week) and I am UP 5-6 lbs from where I started. I feel fat and gross and I think I might just quit now.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (811 posts) at 10:26 AM:
Hey there! Don't quit! Talk to us. What's your program been like? Where are you feeling stuck? How can we help you stay on track?

Body for Life Forum Message by tgantt (34 posts) at 10:26 AM:
FitGirl86 Don't do it. No one can make you be committed, but its hard not to feel the affects of this program when you are doing it right. I get frustrated when looking at the scale (I have 60 LBS to lose), but I continue to try on pants that did not fit in the beginning. You need to give this program 100% for 12 weeks. If you don't notice any positive changes at that time, then consider not continuing. I would be willing to bet that you will.

Body for Life Forum Message by FitGirl86 (19 posts) at 10:28 AM:

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (369 posts) at 10:29 AM:
FitGirl86, you need to give it more than 3 weeks to see results. How is your eating and weight training? If you give up now you'll regret it later and if you stay the course you'll thank youself for believing in yourself!!

Body for Life Forum Message by leankat (33 posts) at 10:29 AM:
Hi FitGirl186, I can tell you are frustrated with your recent results. I think the changes all take time, and it relly takes time to change your mental perspective to encourage a positive attitude about your body image. You are young, NOT overweight, and need help to see yourself in a more positive way. This program is as much aboutbuilding self esteem as about building up your body. Don't feel bad if you aren't perfect. I find that I can put so much pressure on myself I couldn't possibly live up to my own expectations. Maybe you are doing the same. Be kind to yourself! The increased weight may be related to building lean muscle mass, because you are at a normal BMI already. Work on giving yourself positive encouragement, don't beat yourself up if each day isn't perfect and be patient, you are young, beautiful and have your whole life ahead of you!

Body for Life Forum Message by FitGirl86 (19 posts) at 10:31 AM:
O.k. I know I should be beating myself up, but I haven't weighed as much as I do today in about 5 YEARS. Regardless of diet. How can I not be frustrated? I know for a fact that if I stop with the protein, go back to 3 meals a day, the weight will come off again. This is why I quit my first challenge. The first 4 weeks I got too big for my clothes. ugh.

Body for Life Forum Message by betterthanaverage (5 posts) at 10:33 AM:
this isn't going to help much - but perhaps someone else has some ideas? i'm on my 4th week. have gained 8 lbs. all my clothes are tight. this is the heaviest i've been in 4 years. i'm used to eating what i want when i want, and if that means skipping meals, that's what i've done. but i'm trying to follow the 5 meals a day plan - and i do admit that it's really helped even out my appetite - i'm no longer ravenous at night and i like that feeling. i'm also eating healthier, and i'm more conscious of preparing well rounded meals. but i have to admit, i feel miserable. i hate being this heavy and having my clothes fit like this. i wake up depressed because i know it's another day of being heavy. and all this is happening when i decided to do something good for myself like b4l? i'm shocked. but i promised myself when i started that the most important goal was to FINISH. i have a tendancy to overthink things, exactly as i want to do now because it seems to be backfiring...yet how can skipping meals, eating poorly and doing half-ass workouts really be better for me? so i'm sticking to this. but i'm not happy about it. i called the eas hotline - very helpful. bought some supplements. they told me that it may be that my body has built muscle and not yet started burning fat, so i'm stuck with layers of both right now. well, it can start ANYTIME NOW!!! hope that wasn't too much of a rant. if anyone has some advice, pointers, support...i (we) really really need it now.

FG86 - Hi there...please don't get discouraged. We all have those days to where it's easier just to quit than commit. You watch and see how many of us are willing to take you under our wings and support through this process. We want you to be successful. You have to stay positive and look at the big picture and push towards that end result. At the same time - be sure to enjoy your day to day successes..even if you are gaining lbs (which is very normal)..you have to be proud of your choices to exercise and eat right and walk away from the junk food, taking that walk around your street, etc...you have to be proud of those baby steps! Youre always one step closer to your goal as long as you continute TO that goal. We are proud of you and thank you for posting your concerns...You can do it!

I want to go back to eating a 90 percent sugar diet because god knows I feel soooo much better not having to think about it. It may be because I'm sleeping most of the time but whatever...pass me some chocolate and chips!!! Bring on the movie theatre popcorn and fried chicken!!! Here's to quitting!! I'm all over it.

Body for Life Forum Message by TNT's-MOM (375 posts) at 10:41 AM:
Ok I just read your profile you said you ate poorly 1st week and had the flu, so you need to give this program more of a chance. Are you watching your portion sizes and combining this with the proper carbs, this is not a high protien diet it is a sensible combination of the right foods. You say you are up 5 or 6 lbs and bloating, how were your free days? did you really go crazy? If so that 5 or 6 lbs could be water retention, try watching your salt intake and make sure you are getting enough water, if you think you are in the bathroom all the time then you are getting enough water! LOL hang in there with this group and this program, sometimes you gain a little at first you build muscle then the fat starts melting off, you don't look like you have much to loose so you will not see the dramatic results immediatly but take some pic's stick with it 12 weeks follow the program to a T takes some pics and I think you will see the results. Good Luck TNT mom

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2371 posts) at 10:44 AM:
FitGirl - this is not a high protein diet - it's a balanced diet. Why not list exactly what you are eating right now including portion sizes. Out of curiosity, list your typical diet prior to BFL. My first thoughts were that you've put on muscle and haven't started to burn fat - YET!!! Are you following the program exactly? Any PMS bloat right now?

Body for Life Forum Message by betterthanaverage (5 posts) at 10:48 AM:
sorry - somehow i missed everyone elses reply in my quick response to the intial comment. it's actually really comforting to hear that someone else is stuggling. i'm also somewhat close to my ideal weight - 5'10" and (NORMALLY) 150. but now i'm 162 and NONE of my clothes fit and i've not felt like this...well, i've never actually not been able to find something in my closet that fits. maybe a bit too snug, but workable. it's pretty horrifying, especially when every day i'm disciplining myself to do the right thing. anyway - i joined this program to see RESULTS. i'm tired of aimless workouts in the gym and no changes to body fat or muscle definition. so while i'm not too obsessed with the scale (i know muscle weighs more than fat), i DO want my clothes to fit better and i want to see some nice looking muscles. my big reward at the end of this 12 weeks is an appt' with a wardrobe consultant. but to be honest, what scaring me even more is that my boyfriend started talking about rings and engagments, and right now...well, i just don't want to look back on this 'wonderful' time in my life and remember feeling fat (and i don't want the pictures to document it either). at this point, i don't think my normal ring size would even fit on my hand. am i just whining? cause this is my first time saying anything on this site and i've come out NOT saying anything positive.. well, you'll get me on my good days too. just keepin' it real... :) i'm just happy to see someone else going through this because i scoured the site before and i couldn't find anything.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2371 posts) at 10:57 AM:
Oh jeez, I just looked at your profile. Girl, I'm gonna give it to you straight like people in the past have done for me. If you don't like it, too bad. Your weight is fine. Are you measuring your bodyfat regularly? Has that changed? If you continue this program as outlined you will see amazing progress. I do remember embarking on a weight training program years ago and I gained about 8 lbs in 2 weeks. No it was not all muscle and neither is your 5 lbs in 2 weeks. Who knows what it is - could be water for various reasons. Here's the sad part. You're 25 years old if you think that lowering your protein intake and not weight training is going to give you a 115 - 120 lb body without bodyfat you've got a rude awakening coming. Each year it will get worse. Trying to maintain that type of figure will get you nowhere. If you do go that route remember my words when you're 35 or 40 and you're 135 or 140 lbs and you have to eat less & less and any type of food you eat goes straight to storage (as in fat). You've got everything going for you right now - no weight to actually loose, 22% bodyfat is not bad at all. Its only been 2 weeks!!!!! Give yourself 12 weeks - applying yourself 100%, including the diet, you could very well end up at 13 - 15% bodyfat, the same weight and be everything everyone around here is trying to look like.

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (71 posts) at 11:09 AM:
i wonder if the "look" you are going for is more skinny/scrawny than healthy, muscular, fit? if thats the case, you should quit and be skinny (which can still be a high body fat %) if you want a healthy strong body, then give it a chance. i would ask about your portion sizes, your HIIT (are you actually going to failure) and what you are eating. but first fitgirl..you need to decide exactly what you want to look like and how healthy you want to be.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (811 posts) at 11:12 AM:
For a true example of what Flower's talking about, take a look at my very first before photo. THIS is what you get from starting out in your early 20s at 120 pounds and then coasting without paying any attention whatsoever to your food and weight training! And honey, the complaints and the whining only get louder.

I agree with flower...just wait until you are older. Start now in developing good nutrition and exercise habits. Do not wait until you are 35 or 40 to start because it will be far more difficult then.

And, as for the scale, if it bothers you to see what is going on, don't use it. If the clothes you had are feeling tight now, tough. Keep at this because one day during the 12 weeks you will see a dramatic change and you'll be saying, WOW!, and "Why the heck did this not happen sooner in the 12 weeks?" I weigh myself daily as a guideline and do not let it affect me other than some days I say "GRRR...Stupid scale!! I'll show it, and then that day I watch what I eat more closely and make sure I truly hit my 10's!" I do not get discouraged or consider giving up. And, since I have been weighing myself daily for so long, I can honestly say my weight fluctuates 3 - 5 pounds daily, from the morning to night. I think that is bizarre but that is my body.

Anyway, keep plugging away, review your nutrition and workouts, ensure you are doing BFL correctly, make changes if necessary, and keep active on this site, letting us know how you are progressing. Swallow some of that youthful pride & knowledge and listen to some of us older people. We have been where you are, have lived it, and we do know what we are saying about how the body changes as it gets older. It is far easier at your age to make changes in lifestyle than 10 - 20 years later. DO NOT GIVE UP!!

Fitgirl86- I guess I would suggest putting the scale away for a little bit and just focus on following the program. I found if I just do the exercise ,eat the authorized foods in the right portions, BFL works. I don't weigh my self everyday and I am not counting out each carb and protein at each meal. I am taking a relaxed approach and not over analyzing things and I feel like I am having pretty good results so far. Try and stick with it I think you will be glad you did. Karyn

I have a concern about the working out 3-4 times a day. Your body needs some time to recover. If you have been overdoing the workout and not eating enough good stuff then you body is going to use up its muscle and fat and thus a small scale weight. When the body suddenly gets good food and a chance to recover it will build the muscle back up but is going to keep with the fat storage because it remembers that it might get starved again and overworked. I didn't see the point at which my body finally started to change until week 8. Eating right and Exersicing right make sense and sometimes it take time for the body to adjust. Be patient. And I recommend mesuring bodyfat % and how you feel with energy for the next 8 weeks and not scale weight. Keep us posted on what you both decide.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (122 posts) at 11:37 AM:
Another thing...you could be bloated/constipated from the increase in protein. It takes a little while for your body to adjust to the increase in protein but it does happen. It's a pretty common thing to hear people complain about the bloating in the first few weeks. And have you eaten something particularly salty? I had pork roast Monday night and Tuesday morning I weighed 4 pounds more than normal. Even today I still can't get my wedding ring on even though my weight is back down, I can still feel that I'm holding onto some extra fluid. The scale does not tell the whole story.... You'd have to eat mountains of food to really gain 6 pounds in 2 weeks.

Hey FitGirl, You know what id do. If you feel that your going wrong somewhere (you must, its impossible for this not to work for you) write us down a typical day (meal and workout) and we can all chip in and see. BUT, if you follow the book to a T which constitutes 1. Proper Nutrition 2. Intense Workouts (hitting those 10's) 3. Proper Supplementation 4. Having the correct mind set 5. Drinking lots of water You cant go wrong. This is the first time i have done the challenge by the book and i measured my success by the tape measure and how my clothes fit, definately not the scale. Dont quit - Let us help God Bless from Cyprus Pan

Agree with Karyn, put the scales away for the next few weeks at least. I never bother weighing myself (well maybe every 6 weeks out of curiosity). I can tell my body is changing by the way my clothes fit and by how much lighter I feel when i'm running. I have more pride looking at my figure in the mirror, than the figure on the scale. Chris

CantStopMe - I am sorry to say that your sarcasm is less than appreciated. I'm not an out of shape lard ass who has never worked out. I've always been athletic, and I've never experienced weight GAIN with any program. Hence the frustration I'm feeling. HotBody- I haven't spent all these years "coasting" in regards to diet and exercise. Perhaps you were a couch potato, or know others who were, but I'd appreciate it if you don't assume those things about me, as they do not apply. To the people who offered some support, thanks VERY much. I need to vent sometimes. I know some people get bloated with too much protein. I believe if you stick to the small quantities of protein in your 6 mini meals, you will be fine. Go ahead and make those protein portions very conservative. I too feel it can be too much for me. So I mix up the types of proteins and I keep them as small as possible. I don't do any powders or bars. Just food. I think the powders and bars can give you a gassy full feeling. Maybe that is part of it. And as someone else mentioned, you may be a tad constipated. If you were eating less and also very little protein, you may feel your digestive system is slow. Drink your water. Go easy on your portions. You did NOT gain 6 pounds of fat or fat and muscle in 2 weeks. Your body will adjust to this. You are lucky. If you adopt this lifestyle now, you will enjoy a fit and healthy body for the rest of your life.

Umm...didn't you post two days ago that you had a HUGE cheat day? I know that after a big cheat day, I can be up 4-5 pounds because of water retention and bloating. It's not fat. If you only have a small amount to lose, it's gonna come off more slowly. And if you continue to "eat poorly" and have "less than stellar" workouts, you won't see any progress. This is a way of life, not a diet. If you give it 100%, you WILL see progress.

Try your best to do the 12 weeks. If after 12 weeks you still feel frustrated, then you can make another decision. I do hope that you reconsider and stay with it because I think you will do fantastic and the pounds that you are seeing now will only be a figment of your imagination down the road. Good luck with what you decide to do. HUGS! Jennifer

I don't get it. You lost a pound your first week, said that you ate like crap the second week and now you are up 5 or 6 pounds. 127-1+5=131. Yeah, it looks like regular old math to me. I do the same thing. I just ended my first official challenge last week and went on a binge for 4 days, gaining a pound of fat each day. Now it is going to take the first two weeks of challenge 2 to make up for what I did in 4 days. It is plain and simple math, period. You follow the program, you loose 2lbs of fat a week. Want to look like a swimsuit model? From your starting point it would take you only 8 weeks. Thats right, break it down into small goals. In 8 short weeks you can have a nice 23 inch waist and 34 inch hips. If you really stick to the program from your starting point you will weigh between 117-120 and be the envy of everybody on this board. Don't give up.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (159 posts) at 12:50 PM:
Another thing to keep in mind...when you weigh less, it takes fewer calories to maintain. You will not drop 2 pounds a week. I was playing with the numbers on one of the calorie/workout sites (can't remember what it was) but when I increased my starting weight in the equation, I was burning more in the workouts and needed more calories per day. Since you are close to your ideal weight, your workouts and nutrition will show up in your definition. Not on the scale. I have read other's posts about dropping 6 or 7 pounds and have felt somewhat envious, even tho I'm at my ideal weight. I guess it just feels like they are getting better results. But it is just different results. You are at the fine tuning stage. It is not going to be a numbers game. It is going to be about how strong you feel, how much you improve in your HIIT and how toned and defined your body looks. P.S. I don't think a goal of 115 lbs. means that you want to be skinny. I'm 115 at 5' 5" and I'm getting buff!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2371 posts) at 12:51 PM:
Oooooohhhhhhh, you ate like crap for a week & workouts weren't too great? I did not know this. This sheds a whole new light on the situation. Well I've certainly put on that kind of weight after a week like that. Get back on track and it'll come off again.

Body for Life Forum Message by Spec V Me (29 posts) at 01:06 PM:
I disagree with Framed on the "you will not drop 2 pounds" comment. Those calculators are for the average lazy American. When on the BFL you gain muscle and it is metabolically active. So even though we are losing weight we usually gain muscle and hence burn more calories.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (159 posts) at 01:32 PM:
Spec, it's pretty tough if you are already at your ideal weight to lose 2 pounds if you are gaining the muscle. I'm not a "lazy American". While following BFL to the T, I just won't see numbers drop on the scale. I don't have the fat to lose. So if it kept dropping, I'd be wasting my muscles too. For some of us 1/2 a pound a week is a reasonable expectation. Or...no weight loss and even some gain as the muscles increase. Look at LeanZ. His scale is going UP while doing the same diet and exercise program. Swapping out fat (what little he has) for muscle means a jump in the number on the scale for him. I'm just saying, expectations should be different for everyone based on where you are. Those with the most to lose seem to have the biggest losses in a weeks period. And it makes sense.

Hey Fitgirl, I remember listening to Bill Phillips radio show that he said it is mental as well as physical. I have also experienced that when you are attempting to decrease the bad things like detox so to speak whether is from smoking, eating wrong foods or what not our bodies tend to dispell all the toxins that were harming us, that goes well to our mental state or our emotions. Have you ever worked out and started to cry for no reason? Its because your body was yearning for some attention and your hormones and brain etc... are receiving pure energy and oxygen that is filtered through your lungs and pores. Just let it out, take a deep cleansing breath and let it all out but don't give up. We are not giving up on you. Sometimes things can be refocused by simply taking a deep breath and ask yourself "Do I love me?" Why am I doing this? Am I really unhappy or is it because I just have so much going on that I just need to scream? You know I find a good pillow and put it over my face and scream as loud as I can until I am horse or start to cry then I get mad with myself and get of my butt and start doing something about it. Everyone here is rooting for you. Sometimes people use reverse psychology like Can'tstopme. I think that works for some people not all. And also some look at your past habits, but no one is blaming you. Everyone here is supporting you and want to keep you focused and on track. But remember "To thy ownself be true" No one can do it but you. Hugs and kisses Sandiepooh

Hey - I have been feeling a little down myself because my weight hasn't changed much. But when I saw an old friend he couldn't believe how much muscle I have put on. So hopefully its moving from gut to elsewhere. I still need to lose 20-25 lbs so that my muscles show through. But when I think back - I really have not been eating clean. I've been getting in my work outs but doing little cheats here and there on eating that add up. Its hard to eat totally clean for one day. But I bet if you do - and control the portions you will see the results like some of those in the top 20. Not necessarily the champions since I think they use trick photography and plastic surgery....

You should do what you think is best. Examine your goals and see if they are compatible with the Body for Life program. I mean, if you just want to lose weight, like you have in the past, do it your way. It's hard to follow through with something if your heart isn't really in it, and that's not a criticism, it's reality. You really have to want to do the program in order to succeed. As a great person once said "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear" Best of luck to you no matter what you decide to do.

hey everyone - maybe i posted wrong as it was my first time - do i need to start a new thread? i jumped in because i'm having the same issues with weight AND size gain (on my 4th week) and had not seen any other posts like it, and was hoping to get a little support myself (not to steal fitgirl's thunder, but i'm feeling pretty out of sorts myself). please let me know if i should be posting differently - kinda new to this. if not - than here's a bit more... i'm somewhat different from FitGirl in that i'm NOT 5'4" and thin. I'm 5'10" and incredibly average. I'm somewhat naturally lean, never weighed more than I do now, which is 160, usually I'm at 150 without watching diet/exercise. i've always worked out, but i'm definitly one who will do 60 minutes on the elliptical, get a good sweat, but watch tv the entire time. apparently it takes more focus than that if i want to look better than average. weight lifting makes me feel great, but have never seen many physical results. to be honest, my before pics are so bad and i've gone downhill since that i don't dare post them (yet). actually feeling worse than i have in probably 5 years (alot of that is due to just feeling heavier). anyway, that's my wrap. i wont' give up, but i'm honestly not feeling hopeful, AT ALL. just doing this now because i promised i would finish NO MATTER what. just feeling stressed, and added pressure (read above posts) that get me panicked if this doesn't work and makes me quit and go back to my old ways which at least i know will make feel better. definitly giving 100% at the gym, and added some extra cardio - not as intense as the 20 min sessions. thinking i may post some food diaries and get your feedback. sorry for the long post, but one more thing. i am floored at how supportive you all are. even with fitgirl being kinda bitchy and close enough to her ideal weight, you all handle it like mature adults. i especially appreciated the sarcasm...cause really, how can we rationalize quitting? to go back to mindless eating and unfocused workouts? it's stupid.

FG86...all I am going to say is, give it a chance, it's a 12 week challenge. After the 12 weeks are up, if you don;t like the results, then you can always go to what works best for you. A friend of mine is doing weight watchers & not working out at the moment. Her reason, because she wants to see here scale numbers drop. It's working for her, she has a goal in mind & at that time she is going back to working out & will not worry about the number anymore. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. ~Tried To Amend My Carnivorous Habits~

betterthanaverage...don't want you to feel ignored. But all that I said in my posts applied to you too. You aren't HEAVY so you aren't going to drop pounds fast. You need to really look at the portion sizes. These 6 mini meals really don't amount to more food than a normal person eats in 3 meals. Basically you are taking your 3 meals and splitting them 6 ways. I think you will find that it all comes together for you around week 8. Suddenly the fat is gone and you can SEE the nice lean muscles. Hang in there. Be careful on your portion sizes. Really keep that protein to the size of a deck of cards (no larger) and keep the carb to your fist. If you stick to it. It is going to make you stronger, tighter and slimmer. Just give it time.

Body for Life Forum Message by motleybtm (3 posts) at 05:46 PM:
Fitgirl, I understand you may get some bloating with the increased protein. Someone mentioned above that the bars/shakes can cause a gassy/bloated feeling - that's the case for me, at least where bars are concerned. I think that person gave you really good advice about easing in with the protein. Have you read through hussmanfitness.org? It's a really fantastic site that anyone who does BFL type training and nutrition should read. He breaks it all down so you understand why it works, and what you have to do to make it work. Here's the skinny (no pun intended) on that 6 lbs you gained: for every .lb of fat you lose or gain, it means taking in or creating a deficit of 3,500 calories. Think about it: to gain 6 lbs means taking in an excess of 21,000 calories. That's a lot for one week. So while you *may* have eaten high calorie for a week, but chances are you only succeeded in gaining a pound or two. And the vice versus is true: to lose 2 lbs in a week you have to have a deficit of 7,000 calories. It's likely what you have gained is water. Are you drinking lots of water every day? That will help you to keep from retaining. Listen, people get very defensive when a program they follow (and KNOW that it work) is doubted by someone. People who have followed the program, eating clean and pushing hard, KNOW that BFL can work for you. So give it some time, and keep true to it. I can't tell you how much I LOVE the muscles that I have. It will come, if you just stay the course. Good luck!! :) Heather

hey framed - thanks for the response. yes, was and am feeling left out but i think that's just what i get for jumping in on someone else's thread. i've taken your advice (EVERYONE's advice) and checked out that calorie-tracking website, and Donna's bio. As for the calorie tracking (I'm assuming this is where I can make changes as I'm feeling pretty good about my workouts), all i can say is...BRING IT ON. i think us 'average' girls think we can get away with snacking since we're closer to our goal weight, or because we're active enough, or hell, just being 5'10"...i can usually hide my weight easier than my shorter friends. but bottom line is: if i have to learn to be accountable for every bite of food i take into my bod, in order to see a change, then i'm ready to take on that challenge. it will be interesting to see too the effect my eating has on my mood, energy, health, etc. i like how that online food tracker breaks it all down for you. so thanks everyone for the advice. trying to look at the positive here, and get the most out of this experience, even if it's not what i expected.

Focus on your meals, make sure you're eating 100% clean, focus on your workouts and hitting your 10s. This is NOT a high protein diet. It is higher than some, yes, but not really high. Maybe pay attention to specifically which foods make you feel bloated and make substitutions for those. Please give this time, I really think you'll be glad you did!
