I usually eat 4 meals which consist of food and 2 shakes. I'm usually up with peanut butter toast and a banana, a shake on the way to work (I work the second shift) a salad, then a my first meal, then my second meal and then a another shake before bed. I usually space about 2.5 to three hours between meals. Also make sure you drink plenty of water. I purposely keep an old McDonalds Super Size cup (42 Ounces) at my desk at work as both a sipping cup and also a reminder to keep my diet clean and regular. I would say a minimum of 5 meals so that you regulate your body and not starve it. I've tried to keep it at 6 meals and some people have even said their challenges went to the next level after they added that 6th meal in. It's weird but sometimes adding more into your body can actually fuel more of the transformation instead of deterring it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Fiona (9 posts) at 03:36 AM
5 generally depending on what time I have breakfast. Sometimes I have a early morning shake, then its 6. The days I have 5, if I need something before bedtime, I dont hesitate to have a small something. So go with how you feel. Its better to have something authorized if you require the 6th.
Body for Life Forum Message by Fiona (9 posts) at 03:38 AM
Oh yes, its normally a gap of 3 hours.

yea, i eat 5 or 6 depending what time I wake up and what time I go to bed, since I don't have to work I have a flex schedule
just be sure it's every 2 and 1/2 to 3 hrs

averismommy told me that she contacted EAS a few weeks from the end and they gave her the "pre-contest plan" so to speak. The plan was basically really restricting carbs and doing the water-shed thing. You can see my post about it in the thread "Cabbage Soup Diet." EAS can fax you the details. Good luck! Looking forward to final pics! :)

Here is mine:
Day 1: Chest/Triceps
Day 2: HIIT Cardio/Abs
Day 3: Back/Biceps
Day 4: HIIT Cardio/Abs
Day 5: Legs and Shoulders
Day 6: HIIT Cardio/Abs
I can sometimes get in three UBWO exercises in but my shoulders are my weakpoints and if I try to do them after two other exercises I'm dead to the world the next day. I guess do what works for you...I've been doing this for about 6 weeks and it's been working great!!
Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (95 posts) at 03:42 PM
I wouldn't do shoulders right after biceps/triceps days or you might have a hard time. Try keeping the larger muscle groups together and doing them first, then a day of rest followed by the smaller muscle groups.

I pretty much plan it sunday and that's usually when I cook it as well. Anything I don't cook Sunday night (protein shakes, tuna fish, toast, fruit, etc) I can pretty much rustle up in less than 5 minutes. Sunday is pretty much my prep time for the week. That's when I clean all the food containers, go to the grocery store and prep everything as much as possible. Exercise goals I do right before I start lifting or cardio, otherwise I chicken out and sometimes don't go to the gym...weird I know...but once I'm there I make the goals so I can surprise myself!! I also have non-exercise and eating goals I try to set as well but those are things that I do when I can.

For all of you experienced BFLers, is the "Hell Diet" the most effective way to get over a plateau? I'm down to my last 10-12 pounds to loose, and I'm pushing myself harder everyday, but my weight, body fat, and measurements aren't budging. Can any of you give me some inspiration and/or advice???
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (604 posts) at 10:01 AM
Do you keep track of your total calories per day?
One of the best ways to break out of a plateau is to eat more for a week and then drop back down to your normal calorie level. This kinda revs up your metabolism.
Im talking somewhere around 200 calories extra a day for a week.
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (207 posts) at 10:02 AM
how is your diet currently? are you aware of how many calories you are taking in?
Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (2640 posts) at 11:32 AM
zig zag your carloies, ex: 2 days 1200 calories next 4 days 14oo calories and then back down to 1200 for a few days
good luck

Thanks for the advice. I will try that. My ball park calories are 1400-1600. I say roughly because I've tried using fitday, but they don't have a lot of things I include regularly into my diet such as balsamic vinegar, and a few others. I find it very time consuming, maybe I just don't have the hang of it. My typical day is M1 5 egg whites, 1/4c oatmeal with low cal yogurt M2 EFL meal such as sloppy joe or chicken salad M3 protein shake M4 chicken w/ 1/3c brown rice and lots of veggies M5 Cottage cheese and apple, and sometimes I have a shake as meal six, but usually I get just my 5 meals in. And 1000 ounces of water.Oh yeah, and 1 cup of black coffee in the a.m Any feedback is so appreciated.

Fitday tip.
You can add your own foods. Where it says add custom...you can enter the nutritional info from the food label into your own database. I wouldnt be able to use fitday if not for this feature.

i couldn't lose weight for a couple weeks because i wasn't getting enough sleep. i'm no expert on plateau breaking, but a lil more sleep when you can get it in (but don't stop working out!) can help your body catch up on work it's been slacking on.

I totally agree with rainy on the sleep issue. I was pushing myself to get work done late at night for days in a row. I finally dropped from exhaustion and went to bed Friday night at 8:00. When I woke up Saturday, I felt like an entire clothing size was gone!

Try having some hot tea with Splenda. I like the dessert teas like vanilla almond or chai. You can add a splash of skim milk to make it taste more rich. I find that sipping something sweet, especially warm, helps curb my appetite. Of course, if it's just one of those days... :P
Body for Life Forum Message by AirSpace (49 posts) at 03:49 PM
Wow, thanks... great suggestion! I was approaching that panicky feeling that can lead to a major binge attack for me... I'm sipping on some orange spice tea w/splenda now (thank goodness I have a well-stocked kitchenette at work) and it's already soothing my tummy... whew...

Or, you could do what I did the Friday following Thanksgiving. I bought a half gallon of butter pecan ice cream and ate the whole thing! Can you imagine all that calcium in that?? That's really good for the bones! However, I was a bit sluggish the next morning--wonder why?
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (207 posts) at 05:17 PM
Is anyone else suffering this? I noticed it the other night and was a bit freaked out about it.
I've now lost approx 50lbs, have just completed my first week of Ab-Boot Camp, and have been doing pilates for more than 12 months. I've also only got another 20lbs to lose until I reach my goal of 112lbs. However, when I stand up my belly is flat as a pancake and I can't pinch an inch, but when I sit down or worse still, go on all fours, my belly is REALLY loose and hangs in folds. I know I have a bit of body fat to get rid of around my abdomin, but I can feel the muscle underneath my skin when I press down in a standing position. Last night I had a nice long bath before bed, and notcied as I bent over to pull out the plug, that my lower belly was really crepe/crinkly and hung down like a hammock. Apologies to those who have only just eaten. I don't have excess skin, (I don't think), like I say when I stand up I can't pinch an inch, but I'm a bit concerned about it. Has anyone else suffered this problem? I'm very embarassed about it.

I have lost a bit over 80lbs and am also young and have more than just crepe belly, its more like very very very loose belly...when I stand up my stomach is basically flat but when I am on all fours or bent over I definitely have what you are describing and probably more:(!!! It all depends on your particular genetics on whether or not it ever gets completely tight. I have a sneaking feeling that this also might be a normal phenomenon that no skinny person ever feels the need to speak about, but since we were once bigger, we notice changes in our bodies quite easily and think this is weird when nobody else ever really thinks anything of it. I dont really know but these are just a few of my ideas:)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (207 posts) at 05:56 PM
First of all congratulations on your 80lb loss! That's truely amazing!
Sencondly, thanks for speaking up about it. I'm glad I'm not alone in this. I think you're right when you say that everyone suffers at the hands of gravity....Even the skinniest girl will have a bit of "hammock belly" when she's on all fours, but mine looks quite extreme! I've just finished my last day of week three, and so I haven't yet see the benifits of BFL. I'm really excited about the infamous "8 week melt down" to hit, and I've really given it 100% and don't cheat even on my free days.
In short, I know I'll see improvement, but I was just wondering whether anyone else has got/suffered from this dilema. When I look at some of the photos on the official BFL site, I see women maybe twice the size I used to be, who have had children, (which I don't), and they don't seem to have that problem now.
Fingers crossed we'll overcome it Crystal!

Pseudo,
I think it's perfectly normal to have these feelings and temptations, whether you are fat or thin, in shape or out of shape. You're right...denying that you have these feelings is denying that you are human, and I believe would set you up for danger later (to not face these emotions head on; to constantly be in denial "I would NEVER consider an affair").
You realized you were attracted to another man who pays attention to you, and you are kind of blah about husband sometimes. I don't think that makes you a bad person.
The important thing is that you have considered the possiblities, and came here asking us to set it straight for you. You knew the "right" answer, but just wanted us to slap you a couple of times. If you really wanted to cheat on hubby, you wouldn't have asked us. You'd already be there.
I'm glad you talked to your husband, and that realized that you don't want to lose him or hurt him. Good luck to you, and I hope you learn to keep all these men who want you at bay. :) Just have fun with and appreciate the attention, but don't cross that line. It wouldn't be worth it. I supspect your fantasies are much better than the reality would be. Try to use that sexual energy and put it back in your marriage. Maybe it will work wonders.
All the best,
Karla

I use Crystal Light, I'll admit it. It's either that or get only a few cups of water a day because I can't stand it either. What I do to make sure I get all of my fluids is I make up 2 quarts of Crystal Light in the morning. I like the decaffeinated tea especially. I water it down a bit more than the directions so it flavors the water but isn't so sweet. I have a gallon jug that I measured 10 cups in and drew a permanent black line on the outside at the fill line. I fill the jug up to the black line with the Crystal Light every day and insist that I finish it by dinner time. I don't count any of the hot tea or protein shakes I drink during the day. Those, plus any extra fluids after dinner are "icing on the cake" so to speak. It's been working for me as I haven't missed my water intake since the 2nd day and I'm just starting week 4. Good luck!!!

Good luck!

There are 102 guys trying to get enough votes to make the top 8. I can pretty much guarantee that most of them are soliciting votes somewhere, and not here. :)
So go vote for me!

One pound down, to 127. Ate super clean all week (including Thanksgiving!), hit my 10s every day and peed every 20 minutes every day. The scale is frustrating but I wore a sports bra to the gym for the first time yesterday WITHOUT a t-shirt over it! It's been probably 4 years since I've done that. My quads, shoulders, and biceps are popping fast! :) My bodyfat scale broke so I'll need to get a new one if you need that measurement, too. The trainer who did my skinfold measurements the first day doesn't work at my gym anymore and I don't want to compare measurements using a different person. They can be so inaccurate anyway. I might as well stick to the body fat scale that I started using in week 2. I'll PM you tonight gymbeamin'.

I hate to say it but I don't drink sodas if I can. All that carbonation gives me so much gas and as a single guy trying to impress the ladies...well...gas can be a bad thing if there is too much of it :) Try some crystal lite or maybe a freshly squeezed lemon or lime in your water or try limiting it down to 1 can a day or even to your free day. It was hard for me to give up soda but after I did I really did notice my sweet tooth leaving me pretty soon afterwards.

Hi please help. Need to clarify the following:
1. is low fat yogurt classified as carb or protein,
2. Nuts, walnuts/almonds, etc is a protein or fat source
3.Low fat cheeses, mozzarella/ricotta, is a protein or fat.
I am confused. Please advise....
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (22 posts) at 03:09 AM
Hi Fiona. Here's my (very basic) understanding...
Low fat yogurt: Mixed protein/carb
(there is some fat but should just be a small amount if truly low fat yogurt) Keep an eye on any added fruit - really ups the carbs. Just check the nutritional info on the label - I'm sometimes really surprised at the difference between products.
Nuts: Fat
(there is protein, but apparently just a small amount - if monitoring p/c/f content best to treat it as fat)
Low fat cheeses - Protein
A great site for checking p/c/f content is http://www.zoneperfect.com/site/content/miniblocks.asp. Ignore the references to "blocks", just be aware that each portion size gives 9 grams carb, 7 grams protein, or 3 grams fat depending on category (the portion size shown would be for a snack only).
The carb section really helps me with making better choices for fruit and veges. e.g. 1/3 of a banana is equivalent in carb content to 2 nectarines.
I hope it doesn't offend anyone to post a reference to a zone site, but I've found it really helpful in matching the protein/carbs for my meals.
Have a happy day :-)

Is it necessary to buy bars and shakes by EAS?
I currently have been using Balance Bar carb well bars
200 calories, 22 carbs and 14 grams of protein.
The protein powder is called Pure Why Protein Stack by Champion Nutrition. One serving contains 130 calories, 4g of carbs and 23g of protein. (I know the carbs are low so I would eat oatmeal or some other source of carbohydrates with the shake)
Do you think these products are just as good as the myoplex? They are more affordable and seem to be easier to find.
Body for Life Forum Message by havlow (106 posts) at 03:07 AM
Well that can be a yes and no question to be honest. If you're entering the Body For Life challenge I believe you need to use at least 2 EAS products throughout the challenge. However, if you're simply doing BFL to better your life I don't see any problems with using the products you've got already. I use a whey protein powder that's similar to what you're using about 1-2 times a day depending on how hungry I am. I tend to stay away from the bars because I haven't found one that I like yet. Also if you start a free account on Fitday.com you can track what you eat fairly accurately and it gives you a breakdown of how many calories you're taking in and the break down of whether they are coming from protein, carbohydrates and fat. It's not exact science put it's pretty darn close. EAS products are probably superior in terms of what comes in their packaging compared to others, but frankly a multivitamin in the morning and a piece of fruit with your shake are probably just as potent as myoplex and considerably cheaper overall. Again though they biggest reason you would want to use the EAS brand is the fact that it's required to enter the challenge held every year for the prize money.
Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (14 posts) at 08:43 PM
Thanks for the reply. I'm not planning on entering an official challenge so I think I will just stick with the cheaper bars and shakes. As long as I'm not eating cookies and icecream I'd say I'm doing pretty good. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by TaraC29 (32 posts) at 09:01 PM
Just watch the sugars in the bars. Some of them have 20 or more grams. I looked at some that Walmart sells but then I read the ingredients...lots of sugar and usually not as much protein as I would like.

Body for Life Forum Message by IndyGirl (13 posts) at 11:20 AM
I've wondered about this. I'm sure I'll have some cravings at first to satisfy on Sunday but I think overall I'll just take my free day to not be as structured on eating.
I read somewhere that a woman wrote down everything she craved during the week and then ate it all on her free day. Even the thought made me ill. I might make a list and see what, if anything, still sounds good on Sunday. That way, mentally, I'm not depriving myself! :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (39 posts) at 11:01 AM
Milk is a mystery on this program. It is not mentioned in the book in any of the approved foods. It is a staple for me. LOVE IT. Cottage Cheese and Yogurt are approved foods. Where does milk come in? I drink 1% and a cup is 14 g of Carb and 11g of Protein and only 2.5g of fat. So it is very close to a complete meal (comparable to a supplement bar).
Is there a reason why milk is not listed as a protein/carb combo? The carbs are sugars. But a few of the carbs that are listed are sugars.
I've been using a cup of milk twice a day as a meal. Can't eat 6 times a day but with the milk twice a day I can hit 6.
I've noticed some people completely cut the dairy when they are closing in on their challenge. Fill me in on dairy.
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (207 posts) at 11:03 AM
If you are lactose intolerant, milk may bloat you a little. Other than that I dont know why milk isnt listed either. Its the very first protein shake! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (392 posts) at 11:04 AM
The BFL book states that milk is neither a carb or a protien therefore it should be limited to one cup per day.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (604 posts) at 11:11 AM
I think milk is looked down upon because of all the lactose (sugar). Even if you are not lactose intolerant it adds up and there are better carb sources.
Its also looked down upon by many people because of the crap they inject into the cows to produce more milk. Growth hormones and steroids mostly. I refuse to drink anything but organic milk because of this.
Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (154 posts) at 01:35 PM
Great question, Framed!
I've wondered the same. I can't stand cottage cheese and I do okay with yogurt, but in all this talk of protein, carbs and fat . . . I feel that there are some basic nutrients that we need as well. Especially, woman need calicum. I just very recently stopped nursing and nursing and pregnancy is so bad for bone loss.
For myself and my Life, since this is my Body for Life, I've said a glass of skim milk a day and I count it as one of my 10 glasses of water.

Body for Life Forum Message by IndyGirl (13 posts) at 05:55 PM

IndyGirl
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (207 posts) at 12:13 PM
they're kind of in that grey area..Im not too sure on the carb content, but its more than say a serving of leafy veggies, but less than a sweet potato
Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (209 posts) at 12:14 PM
I tend to agree with tigermuscle
Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (95 posts) at 12:36 PM
I'd count them as your carb. They tend to be pretty high on the glycemic index because of their sugar content. I don't think they're as fibrous as the green leafy veggies either. I wouldn't eat a pile of carrots and count them the same as a pile of spinach but I wouldn't count them the same as a slice of whole wheat bread either. I think I'd eat them sparingly mixed with some green veggies to make sure I'm getting both.
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (392 posts) at 01:00 PM
I've never know anyone that got fat eating a carrot.
Body for Life Forum Message by IndyGirl (13 posts) at 03:19 PM
One of my favorite pre-BFL healthy lunches was half a turkey sandwich (one slice turkey on one slice whole wheat bread) and a handful of baby carrots (10-12 small ones). If the carrots counted as a veggie, it'd be a perfect lunch! If they count as carb though, I'll have to count them as a seperate meal and find a way to throw in an extra protein. Not a problem since right now I only see time for five meals a day.
IndyGirl
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (207 posts) at 06:48 PM
I eat carrots every day, and it hasn't prevented me from losing weight. Carrots are great for your eyes, skin, and hair. But then, everyone's different I suppose. I can't eat bread pasta or rice because they bloat me, but some people can get away with them.
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (117 posts) at 07:43 PM
I eat carrots as a handy snack if I get hungry in between or have a craving. I grab a couple of baby carrots and the taste usually takes away my craving, I only have a few and so I dont count them as a carb only as an extra veggie for the day.

Does anyone know which is really better? I get Jell-o pudding to help me through ice cream/desert cravings and I'm not sure which is actually better for me. They both taste good so I could go either way. The sugar-free has "alcohol sugars" listed on the carbs and I don't know what those are or how they react in the body.
Any help?
Laurie
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (604 posts) at 03:36 PM
It really depends on the ingredients list. Sugar free and Fat free products dont actually have to be free of sugar or fat. They just have to be below a certain level per serving size. Tricky!
Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (95 posts) at 03:38 PM
If I had to choose one, I'd choose the sugar-free. Sugar causes huge blood sugar spikes for me which then spikes my insulin, etc... That always leads to cravings and then binging (at least before BFL). The best thing about BFL is that I have cut out sugar and keep my blood sugar constant so I don't have those other issues. A little bit of fat can be a good thing so if you have to choose, I'd say go with that.

I know eating veggies serves several purposes. One, the nutrients. Two, the fiber...which will also help me feel more full. However, does anyone ever substitute with V8 juice. I try to eat a spinach salad daily but I get sick of those...even before BFL. The only other veggies I can tolerate are tomatoes & carrots...and barely carrots. Suggestions?

If you use V8 I personally would consider the lower sodium version as the regular sodium content is off the charts.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (604 posts) at 10:44 AM
Lori, if you dont feel the hams when doing the straight leg deadlift as much, try and put the front half of your feet on a 10lb weight plate so that your heel is on the floor but the rest of your foot is angled up. This puts a lot more work on the hams.

However, I still can't quite grasp the fact I only need do 20 minutes cardio... sure, I was absolutely exhausted after my first 20 yesterday due to those bloody intervals, but I am hoping to lose a lot of weight... is is advisable to do a bit more cardio, or should I stick strictly to the the program?

Some people do more moderate cardio after their HIIT.
But me? well I hate cardio and am sick and tired of wasting hours upon hours at it during the week.. so I'm giving it a shot doing just the 20 mins, but during those 20 I'm kicking my ass to push push push harder!! (gotta make the small window of time REALLY count!)
Good luck with your challenge!!

I have lost close to 40lbs just by following BFL to a T....meaning only 20 minutes of cardio 3 times a week.
If you do the HIIT right you shouldn't have extra energy for more cardio afterwards ;)

It really depends on your goals. If you want to look like an emaciated stick, or like an enduro bicyclist, you can do all the cardio you darned well please. If you want to look lean and muscled and well proportioned, the 20 minute HIIT solution is pretty good. More cardio is never the answer--unless of course the question was: "What is the one thing that you don't have to do with BFL that you do on every other worthless diet plan?"
Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (434 posts) at 11:03 PM
Mike...You Da Mannnnnn!!!!
Cerdes, focus on TRULY hitting your 10 and doing HIIT AS WRITTEN and its all youll really need (as Mike explains sooo well)
If you have alot of weight to lose...you REALLY need to focus on your FOOD and eating 100% CLEAN more than worrying about doing extra cardio. All the cardio in the world wont get you "real" BFL results if your nutrition isnt right.

I'm trying to get some ideas for good upper and lower body workouts to really make this program work. What do you do? (Exercise, reps, sets, weight). I'm just getting bored and need some variety.
Thanks!

Wow- that could be a long post to write everything. Here are a few things that are non-standard that I like to do:
For shoulders:
Grasp a 45 pound plate at the rim and do upright rows with it until failure. Without rest, grab a 35 pound plate and continue to failure. Continue with a 25, and a 10 until you can't do anymore. Quite the burn! :)
For legs:
Do the same drop set to failure idea as above but on the sled (or you can do it on any leg press machine). I start with 10 ten-pound plates on each side. (total of 100 pounds per side plus the weight of the sled) I do as many as I can and then drop off a ten from each side. Keep going until failure.
For biceps:
I do something called sevens. Use an EZCurl bar at a medium weight. Do 7 half-curls that start with the bar up by your shoulders and come down only halfway (so your forearms are parallel to the ground). Then do 7 more half-curls but this time starting with your forearms parallel and going down so they are at your sides in front of you. Then do 7 more curls but this time they are full-range curls from bottom all the way to the top. Make sure you use good form and keep your back straight and arms tucked in at your sides. No swinging! The last ones will really hurt so you might want a spotter to get you through them.
Have fun with these!!!
Jen :)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I don't have access to a gym and I'm limited on equipment right now. I have dumbbells and a barbell (with interchangeable weights) up to I think 40 or 50 lbs., resistance bands, and a stability ball. I like the idea of the drop sets though. Thanks Jen!

Lori, I like the power yoga better than regular yoga because I really work up a good sweat and really feels like I'm working. I checked out your blog and I like your routine, however, like I mentioned before, I don't have access to any weight machines, etc. I'm trying to find something I can do at home with what I have (which isn't much). I'm hoping hubby will get me a incline/decline weight bench for Christmas. That will make things a lot better. I'm wanting one where I can do leg presses, etc. with. Yeah, I noticed you've been kinda bored on your blog. I like the "What kind of drink are you?" thing on there, but when I clicked on it, the link didn't work. Could you send the link to me somehow? Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what kind of drink I am...lol. I'm thinking of something like this (let me know what you all think):
Monday - Cardio/Upper Body, Tuesday - Cardio, Wednesday - Cardio/Lower Body, Thursday - Cardio, Friday - Cardio/Upper Body, Saturday - Cardio Sunday - Rest/Stretch (yoga day)
Should I work abs with the UB/LB days only? (I hate ab work)
Upper Body Workout: * 3x8-10 DB Bench Press (on my stability ball of course) * 3x8-10 Flyes * 3x8-10 DB Lateral Raises * 3x8-12 Weighted Shrugs * 3x8-12 Triceps Bench Dips * 3x8-10 Kickbacks
Lower Body Workout: * 3x10-15 Weighted DB Squats * 3x10-15 Weighted Lunges * 3x15 Seated Calf Raises * 3x15 Standing Weighted Calf Raises * 3x10-15 Single Leg Squats * 3x60 sec. each wall squats
Crunches to failure, Oblique Crunches to failure, Reverse Crunches to failure, Leg Raises to failure
Not sure if that's too much or not, but that's what I usually do (or did this past summer). I can't do much jumping or running because I'm still trying to get my ankle to heal where I sprained it. Been 3 weeks and one day it feels great and like tonight, it's hurting badly. I stayed off of it a little over 1 week, but my dog took off running and pulled me off balance yesterday and my poor ankle ended up taking most of the weight. Not good. Think I may have re-injured in a bit.
Okay, I have bored you all now...lol. I'm trying to find my Firefighter's Workout book (still unpacking from the move). It's got a great split in it and I have a TON of articles and workouts in a notebook from bodybuilding.com. I think I've bitten off more than I can chew...lol Take care.

I used the AccuCheck glucose monitor when I was diabetic during my pregnancy. Insurance covered the lancets, the strips and the monitor. I still have a bottle of the testing strips in my cabinet. I wonder if they'd fit your machine. I can check when I get home and if you can use them, I'll happily send them to you. I need to see if they have expiration dates, though, as I got them 3 years ago. I'll let you know.

3 years? I guess they are expired?
By the way...i have accu-chek compact plus, its a drum of testing stripes instead of testing stripes alone. Its like a camera drum.
And...i live in spain...the shipping cost i guess would be very expensive LOL.
Here they dont cover that stuff...any insurance...so...its quite hard.
ShineyHiney: Mmm well...i dont really need to know something specifical. But...any advice on how to use it...or when...or any kind of advice, would be useful.
Thanks a lot you both!!!

I try to eat clean for my 6 days, but if I slip up somewhere, I accept it as a minor setback and move on to the next meal, although slips ups are rare.If I really have a bad day and ate stupidly, I declare it as my free day, so that week I dont have my original free day. Also if I have some social where junk food is inevitable, then I save that day as Free Day. Bfl is a life programme, so its inevitable to have slip ups from time to time, just as long as we eating healthy most of the time and we acknowledge and learn from our slip-ups. Good luck

I hope you all had a great week - way to go with the cake Laurie!!
I was proud that I had no leftovers except for turkey on Friday Saturday or Sunday - however no loss for the week which may have something to do with the 1/2 a pumpkin pie I ate on Thursday - it was quite a free day - but at least I did not gain and I got my workouts in. It was hard to see my family eating leftovers for 3 meals and not taking part. Let's finish this strong this week - I need it!

I will be posting everyday this week for you, my team, what I eat, what I drink and what my workout consisted of. I expect each and everyone of you to slam me if I stray from my course. Well said Rock-Chick...if anything after my first 6 weeks on this challenge I know EXACTLY what to do and NOT do for the rest of this first 12 weeks and beyond. Daisy, don't worry about what they say. I live in the south as well (NC) and believe me I am surrounded by temptation everyday at work. The first week or two I succumbed to temptation but indulged lightly...having 2 smalls pieces of pizza or only one helping of smoked brisket. I never binged I just simply allowed myself the small bit of sin and realized that I didn't need to eat it and eventually moved past the temptation to the point that when people are bringing in box loads of pizza or other foods that I'm completely happy with what I have in front of me. In some cases I have to fight some of them away from my food, especially the EFL roast ;) Eventually they will just learn to accept that you are going to eat what you want and maybe you might convert a few of them as well...start a BFL revolution!!

my work is literall dieters nightmare. It is nonstop with candybars, cake, icecream, doghnuts etc. Last week we even had a chocolate fondu one day, and a chocolate fountain another day. My co-workers often taunt me with things like "eating a little bit wont hurt you." And they are probably right if I could stop with a little bit. The thing with bfl that has really helped me is my freeday. I take it on sunday, away from the office temptations, but during the week I know it is there and I can tell myself to wait for it, to earn that freeday. By the time sunday roles around i usually dont even care about it (out of site out of mind).
Really the saddest part of the situation, is that I know all of my young co-workers will be in the same situation i am in right now in the next 10 years. Every year i see them gain a little more . . .

I'm from the south to, New orleans was my home, that's one place you learn how to eat, eat and eat some more, but that doesn't have to be an excuse, if you want to eat clean and healthly, you do it, don't make anyone make you feel guilty for doing the healthy thing!
I went the donnuts and sweets route and when you look like a balloon, and feel like you are going to pop, it's not fun, so stick to your guns and GET*HER*DONE!!

I think co-workers who comment on healthy eating are just feeling bad about their own meal choices and wish they had the will power to look past the 'bad stuff' too. At the end of the day you are a better healthier person for it - just remember that!
Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (14 posts) at 08:38 PM
wow! thanks for the encouragement. I think a lot of it is confidence and not allowing people to "get" to me or succumbing to the pressure of fitting in. And you're right, instead of feeling guilty about it, I need to encourage them to make healthier choices.
This friday is inventory and they order about 50 pizzas. I'm already dreading it but my plan is to bring my own lunch and avoid the pizza at all costs. I'll just have to prepare for the comments and plan a appropriate comeback. :)

I know exactly what you mean! Where I work, there is constantly doughnuts, candy and other sweets out and waiting. They also have 2 food days a month where everyone brings in a dish. At first, I'd bring in a dish so I wouldn't be a party pooper, and still stick to the lunch that I brought in. But I'd still have to put up with comments like, "you brought something in, aren't you eating?" and the infamous, "just one won't kill you!" I've stood my ground though, and every time someone makes a remark, my response is always the same, "I just choose to eat healthier." Eventually, they got the message and I don't get beratted nearly as much as I used to. In fact, just recently I've received a couple of positive comments from these same people like, "I sure wish I had your willpower, you're doing great and I can tell you've lost weight!" So...stay strong and stand your ground!

Well, now Lori, that's what I call a good "friend," one that only comes along about every 14 weeks! But hey, let's get serious for a moment. Three small pieces of chocolate--maybe 150 calories tops, if you really mean small anyway! How much weight would that cause you to gain? If it ALL went right to the butt, it would create exactly seven tenths of an ounce! Now, stop worrying and get back to work.

This is how I would classify:
Yogurt = carb
Nuts = fat
Lowfat cheese = protein
Hope this helps. =)

I can't believe how late it is! I think i've become obsessed with this place. :)
I just registered today and my first day starts tommorow! I am extremely reluctant to post my photos. Not because of other people seeing them but I avoid seeing photos of myself like the plague. :) I fear seeing my photo will only discourage me and cause me to overeat.
I have positive and negative feelings as I start this challenge. Positive in that I look forward to losing weight, gaining strength and feeling great. Negative because I fear, like countless times before, I will give up after a week and fail at yet another attempt to take care of my body and like what I see in the mirror.
After looking at so many of ya'lls before and after pictures I find myself saying, "There is no way I could look like these people." I just can't imagine being that defined and this actually working for me. I know having this negative attitude won't get me anywhere. I am determined to go through the 12 weeks but I'm just afraid I will give up. I guess I think, "Why do you think you'll stay with THIS diet when you've quit so many times before?"
Has anyone had similar thoughts going into the challenge? If so, what did you do or tell yourself to change the negative thinking?
Body for Life Forum Message by havlow (106 posts) at 02:44 AM
Daisy I think everyone on this forum had doubts when jumping into this. It's tough to look at those photos and say "hey I could do that" when you're still looking in the mirror at who you are in the beginning. For myself personally I looked at the photos for inspiration but not as a roadmap of exactly where to be in 12 weeks. As the saying goes "results may vary" and I think it holds true not only on BFL but any diet and exercise plan you use. Honestly you have to find you own motivation to keep it going. For me personally after the first week I felt GREAT!! I was sore from the workouts but it felt wonderful to be doing something postive and getting the feedback from everyone here. Also eating was actually the best part!! After getting the Eating For Life book I realized that I wasn't going to be eating nothing but yogurt and nutrition shakes...I was able to not only make a variety of dishes with a variety of ingredients but they were tasty and best of all they were good for me!! I guess a few things I did to ease myself into it and take the pressure off was to realize that it wasn't a diet, but that it was a lifestyle change and also but realistic goals of weight loss and transformation down and anything beyond those would be gravy and anything short of them would be something that might take a little longer than 12 weeks but I'd be happy because I'd been living a healthier lifestyle for over 3 months. I'm on week 6 and I've decided that even if I stopped doing BFL word for word, that I would always keep a healthy lifestyle from here on out. To give you an example of my weekly progress mentally and physically it was something like this.
Week 1 - Sore but eating well and dropped weight. Drank a lot of water and never went hungry even with smaller portions over 6 times a day.
Week 2 - Not as sore but seeing muscle where it hadn't been in a long time. Made new healthy meals and somehow didn't even realize that I was constantly passing those old places I used to get the fast food from.
Week 3 - Gone from soreness to pushing through the endurance barrier and actually enjoying the sweat and high intensity of the workout. Can't imagine why I ever ate unhealthy fast food and junk food before!!
Weeks 4-6 only served to reinforce those feelings and turned them from Mantras, concepts and thoughts into second nature habits. When I'm at the store I don't even look at junk food, when I'm hungry I don't think about jumping in my car and going to the local drive thru. When I wake up in the morning I'm excited about going to the gym...not about getting up and working out, but about how much energy it gives me for the rest of the day.
I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that this program is different for everyone. But give it a shot and please ask for support from everyone here as we will always be there to help you when you need it whether it's an exercise question, a food question or even a quirky off topic question. Everyone here is wanting to see everyone succeed and change their lives and bodies. Hopefully you'll see it as less of a diet and more of a new way of living.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and inspiration! I know it will be a DAILY challenge not to give up but I am determined to complete this challenge. What is the worst that can happen? Yeah, maybe I won't look like the other people on here but I will be healthier, stronger and have stuck with something for 3 months.
Do you find the EFL really helps? I have considered getting it but am reluctant to dish out another 20 bucks on a diet book.
On a side note, I thought of your post about approacing a girl while I was working out tonight. Me and this guy kept making eye contact. I wondered, maybe I should say something or maybe he's thinking of saying something. Have you decided whether or not you're going to approach her? :)
Thank you again for your support.

I about had an anxiety attack the first and second time I posted pictures. Now I am so sick and tired of seeing the same swim suit I had to change out for the next challenge. You need to post your pictures though. It helps out alot.

Natalie,
plenty of support here- good luck on your challenge. Please try not to think of this as a diet. diets tend to be temporary. This is a lifestyle comprised of exercise, nutrition and supplementation. The payoffs are fantastic!
If you have read the BFL book, read again the parts relating to goal setting , vision, and crossing the abyss. You don't have to do this for 12 weeks, you only have to do this tomorrow:)
I promise you will come to enjoy pushing and testing your own limitations.
Success to You,
Yours in Health,
Kerry

Welcome Natalie!
Yes, I had all of those mixed emotions at first, and still had doubts almost all the way through my first challenge. The trick? You have to put the past behind you, and not beat yourself up for things that did not work out before. You can't change that, but you can start anew with this program! This will require a change of mindset, and you must tell yourself that you CAN do this! And it WILL work! Don't just do the 12 weeks, halfheartedly and resign yourself into thinking it did not work. Put everything you have, then some into your eating and workouts that you can possibly muster up! You CAN take charge of your own life! I strongly urge you to post your before pics. Throughout my challenge, I didn't notice changes at all until I looked at the pictures. We get so used to our own bodies and the way they look, that we cannot easily see an acurate image in the mirror, so please...take some pics, you'll be glad you did. Another thing to remember, is that you will have these ups and downs all throughout, just as with anything. Just learn to reach out when you need us, and we are all here.
Once again, welcome and much luck to you!
Jennifer

Natalie, it would be worth your time to look into the EFL book. The recipes are so delicious and easy to make. The EFL book really fits my cooking style and makes it easier for me to follow the program. If I was trying to do chicken and broccoli every night, I think I'd go bonkers.
My results might not be as good as the chicken and broccoli die-hards, but that's okay. At least I'm sticking with the plan, and looking forward to trying new recipes each night. And my husband likes the food too! It's all good.

Natalie, if I can post my before pictures YOU CAN DO IT!
Looking at your profile, you and I are both 5'5", only I started my first challenge FIFTY pounds heavier than you are starting yours. If I can do it, you can!
If you can't bear posting them now, and think it might discourage you, then tuck them away for 4 weeks. Stick to the program the best you can, then take new photos. Once you have the new pics, then take out the old ones and see how you've done. It will definitely be an encouragement for you!
i was skeptical of how I would do at first too. I saw LOTS of people who were already thin in my opinion getting buff, but wasn't sure how it would work for me since I had more fat to get rid of. Doing the challenge was the best thing I could have done!
And as I've said before, if at the end of 12 weeks you haven't changed at all, at least you ate healthy and exercised and are healthier on the inside for it. BUT, I KNOW you will have amazing changes if you stick to it!
Go to it girl! Micky

Today (11-28-05) I begin again to complete a 12 week challenge. I made a huge change towards the success of completing this challenge by making it a challenge not only towards myself, but I got my wife, and mother-in-law on board to compete against me.
Anyway, the subject line (No Excuses - Just Results) is a saying I came up with one day while I was teaching and listening to excuse after excuse from some student as to why their homework was not done. I just blurted out the saying, and not it's our class motto, and my freshman class wants to print up shirts with the saying on it. So I decided to adopt it as my saying for this challenge.
WOW! An idea just hit me as I was writing this. High school kids are notorious for jumping on your case if you do something your not suppose to. It just dawned on me to inform my students of my challenge. This will give me the exta added incentive of not wanting to listen to them razz me if I don't complete it. Believe me, they will stay on me about this and ask me every day how I am doing just waiting for me to slip up. I don't know why I didn't think of this before. Cool.
Anyway, here is to everyone's success and remember No Excuses - Just Results.

Hi Brian. Good luck with your challenge! "No excuses" is one of my husbands favorite sayings too. (He is a college hockey coach so he has heard his share of excuses too!) When I read your post I thought of the book I just bought my husband, "No excuses" by Kyle Maynard. It's a great motivational book and one maybe your students would get alot out of too. Karyn

Good slogan!! We had a similar one when I was in recruiting. It was NO CRUTCHES, and we had a picture of a crutch, and stamped over it in red was one of those circles with the slanted line through it.

Maybe you could write on the corner of your chalkboard, C1W1D1... then everyday it will change until your done with your challenge... the kids will know you're still plugging along and may be excited to see the progression. Have fun with it!! It's a great journey!!

Not that it matters (I'm not an English teacher) but I'm a stickler for typos. I meant "believe", not belive. I figure you already knew that. :)

In the past week, according to my BF% calculator, I lost a pound and a half of muscle. Over Thanksgiving week I might add! What can I do to avoid this in the future? How should I modify my diet? I am following the BFL diet exactly.
Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (209 posts) at 07:41 AM
Here's my opinion according to how I understand it. Take it or leave it. :)
Are you eating a protein and a carb every three hours that you are awake? If so, you should be fine. If you are eating between .8 to 1 gram of protein for desired body weight, you should be fine as well.
Are you eating a lot of chicken? If I'm not mistaken, chicken has the most protein packed/dense meat there is, so if you really want to pack on the muscle, eat lots of it.
Please keep in mind, although the BF calculators are pretty accurate, they aren't 100% accurate. And if you are losing any weight whatsoever, most of the time, a little muscle mass will be lost or sacrficed. As long as it's not like 10 or more pounds in a month's period or something like that, you should be fine. And just because the BF caluculator is stating that you lost muscle, that doesn't mean that is what is really going on inside your body.
Have you checked out the profile of some of the champs? It seems they all lost a little bit of muscle according to the BF% calculator.
Hope this helps.
Body for Life Forum Message by nutz (80 posts) at 07:42 AM
Hmmm. It may depend on the BF calculator. Each method has its faults.
Other than that, there are numerous reasons for losing muscle while on a reduced calorie diet.
If you are are following BFL exactly, I say just keep at it and I think you'll be happy with the results. One thing I'm tweeking is I am adding a post workout shake to my meals (they aren't discussed in detail in BFL). Among body builders, the PWM is vital when trying to gain muscle.
Otherwise, be sure to get enough protein and carbs to support muscle growth. You may have to tinker with the portions since not all bodies are alike, but do it gradually.

I'm so happy. I tried on all of my favorite dresses from 5 years ago (when I got married and was in the best shape) and they fit! I've lost 10 pounds in two months -- I can't believe it. This past weekend I went to a couple of parties and almost all of my friends noticed the change. I know I still have work to do to get muscle definition. But having my clothes fit well is so satisfying! : )

I am not thrilled with pictures at all, but I use this tracker to be accountable so just letting you all know my 8 weeks are up, unfortunately I left orange swim suit at the club and had to use a different one so it might be hard to gauge changes. But I went down 1.7% Body fat in last 2 weeks (6.2% total over 8 weeks) (8 week vs. beginning variance = 12.27 lbs. of fat lost and gained 2.87 lbs. of muscle lost 3 1/2" in waist) So I survived Thanksgiving with really no problem at all! Hope you are all well! I missed ya over the long weekend!

Well, I completed 12 weeks of eating like BFL on Oct 30th, but it took me a while to get my pix up on Tracker. This was a period when I could not get in workouts. I lost about 20 lbs and about 4 inches off the waist. I really needed to lose the weight around the waist.
A side benefit has been a reduction in snoring (according to my wife). I never used to snore until about a couple of years ago when I put on the weight. I don't know if it's a permanent fix, but she's complaining less about it.
I'm back in the gym now two days a week. I'm concentrating on very intense workouts, but I'm still working on the r
