Hi Everyone,
I am wondering if you include the barbell weight when you talk about how much you are bench pressing?
I have a girl I work out with that says you do not include she says guys go by only the plates they put on.
Hey the bar that I lift is 45 pounds if I don't include it then I am only lifting 50 pounds.
What do you girls do?
Thanks!
Shannon
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (214 posts) at 04:50 AM
yes. most olympic bars weigh 45 pounds..so you would include the weight of the bar
oh..were you just looking for a female response? LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (120 posts) at 05:46 AM
definitely include the bar!! Most guys I know wouldnt exclude that in their bragging, but hey everyones different:)

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (168 posts) at 06:12 AM
Yes, definitely include the weight of the bar, unless you are using the Smith machine for bench press. That bar doesn't count.
Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (49 posts) at 07:13 AM
Just wondering about the smith machine. I've only ever seen one. The one at my gym which very very old. The bar is 70 pounds and the machine has no pulleys or anything just a bar with a hook between 2 pieces of steel as a guide.
I count the bar as 70. I mean I am fully lifting the 70 pounds unassisted.
Is this different from other smith machines?
Body for Life Forum Message by CoachMike (18 posts) at 07:14 AM
Include the bar. GeorgiaWendy, why don't you include the weight of the Smith machine bar?
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (214 posts) at 07:23 AM
Coach, I was wondering that too..a bar is a bar..you count it.
Body for Life Forum Message by ptwob2 (195 posts) at 07:30 AM
As for Smith machines and some things like leg press machines, etc. the weight of the bar or the sled, etc. varies. Sometimes it is written on the machine. Some Smith machines are counterweighted so that there is virtually no weight associated with the bar when it is unloaded. I look on the machine to see if the unloaded weight is shown, if not I ask and if the trainers don't know, I guess. In most cases if I don't know I count the unloaded weight as zero. The bottom line is that I am lifting for myself. All I care about is gradual improvement. If I can lift more next month on that particular machine than this month, then I have met my goal. Just make sure that you do it the same way every time. As for free weights, always count the weight of the bar.
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (168 posts) at 08:42 AM
I guess the only two Smith machines I have used were counterweighted. You could literally slide the bar up and down with one finger, and it made a zipper-like sound like it was on bearings.
Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (567 posts) at 08:52 AM
That's how Smith Machines are made to be. There might be a pound or two, but the rest is counterweighted.
I always count the bar UNLESS I'm using the Smith Machaine.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (608 posts) at 08:55 AM
If youre not using the smith machine why the hell not factor in the weight of the bar?!? That makes no sense to me. 45lbs is not chump change especially in your situation.
Body for Life Forum Message by ShanonRun (33 posts) at 09:37 AM
Thank you everyone!
Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (49 posts) at 11:10 AM
I have never seen a counterweighted smith machine. The one I use has the side rails strictly for a form guide.
Interesting.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (534 posts) at 12:24 PM
I don't count it, but our barbell is only about 10 pounds.

Hi all,
Someone mentioned this website in an earlier thread so I went to check it out. I HIGHLY recommend anyone who is relatively new to BFL to read it. It has alot of great information that supports the BFL approach. For me, it cleared up alot of uncertainties, especially with respect to nutrition. Also alot of great info on gaining muscle and losing fat!
Hope you find it helpful!

Wow got a ton of responses...I had no idea it would be that popular. Well I guess it all depends on whether or not I even run into her again. I hadn't seen her at the gym before but maybe she'll be back around tommorow :) I think I'll just be myself and find a way to break the ice it sounds like everyone pretty much agrees that it's okay to approach make some contact then I'm pretty sure I can take it from there. If anything comes of it I'll definitely let you folks know. Thanks for the replies!!

Ok...I have to be the one who throws a wrench into this idea. I think one thing you should consider BEFORE approaching her is "how attached to your gym are you??"
Sorry to be a downer, but people that I have known who dated people they met at the gym have said they would never do it again cause when it ended badly it made going to the gym REALLY uncomfortable and inevitably they ended up having to switch gyms. Just something to consider.
NOW, all that being said...if you aren't super attached to your gym, I say, GO FOR IT!!! I agree with everyone's advice above. Just be yourself, look her in the eyes (for the love of God...don't stare at her breasts or crotch while you are talking to her :)
Good luck!!!

and say HOWDY I have been busy with my MK business and holidays and yes WORKING OUT HARD. I am loving it! I working out hard, harder and hardest and eating clean, cleaner and cleanest. And yes I am getting lean, leaner, and leanest!!!! Wohooooo. I have to admit it was hard over the holidays and esp. yesterday after having the desert buffet sitting right in front of me for not 1 but 3 hours on Saturday evening while everyone grazed and ate it and visited over it. I was alone in my house and wanting to go buy a pint of Hagen Daaz! Dear lord..... drove me insane. But I survived through it.
I made my first Turkey last night. LOL yes after Thanksgiving. I got a 24lb Turkey at Costco for $11.00!!! That is a lot of lean protein there for $11.00! SWEEEEEEET! Only BFLer's, Bodybuilders, or Fitness Junkies could understand the excitement of this. Yes we are strange aren't we? But I am happy to report I made a damn good turkey LMAO. You have to understand I have been so scared of making a turkey don't ask me why? And we have Turkey coming out of our ears. LOL. So if your looking for a way to get lot's of lean protein on a budget ...... go buy those post-Thanksgiving Turkeys they are CHEAP.
Ok all gotta run just wanted to wish you guys Happy Holidays and take care and work out hard. Oh yes and try not to go to crazy on Holiday food it will just set you back further away from where you want to be or where you want to go after January 1st! Remember Christmas is basically 2 days! Not 5 weeks! Be good and don't give in! It's not excuse to pig and gorge yourself. Trust me you won't be feeling Merry or Jolly after a month long holiday binge! Stay strong folks!

My take on water: IF you're on a higher than normal amount of protein, it can be very hard on the kidneys. THe extra water, makes this easier on the body. Something about the difficulty in digesting protein. I dunno, seems like I read something about it in the atkins book. And since we eat protein 6 times a day, I think water with it would keep us safe. I simply have one cup with each meal, and one extra one with the two meals I have the vegi's with.

Megan'sMom...they do make sugar free-fat free Jello Pudding. My favorite flavors are chocolate fudge and cheesecake. I make a mean choc/rasberry cheesecake dessert with cottage cheese, the fudge pudding and rasberry jello. It's very low fat(only from the cottage cheese) and lots of protein!
IndyGirl, I'm with you on it going bad..never happens around here. I do only make enough for 2 servings, and I portion it out before I sit down.

Somewhere years ago I read/heard about changing your foot position when doing calf raises to hit the muscle from different angles and I've been doing this ever since.
I don't get a huge burn from doing my normal set (which I also do on the leg press machine) . . . in fact, I normally do 12 reps for 5 sets, upping my weight each time. BUT, for the second excerise of 12 I dropp the weight back down considerably and I either point my toes in (pigeon-toed like) or point them out (heels closer together) and I can barely make it through the twelve and look like a freak trying to walk away from the machine.
Try it, you'll see what I mean!

Well I work the 2nd shift and don't have much of a choice BUT to work out when I wake up...which is the later part of the morning ;) Mike is right in that make sure you are on an empty stomach before the cardio at least. I've read that not eating about 2-3 hours before your cardio workout is optimum and is a better alternative if you can't make it first thing in the morning. You might also plan your cardio to fall on your days off so that even if you're not an early morning person you can still roll out of bed when you're ready and do the cardio then and have all that energy for the rest of the day.
Good luck,
Jeremy
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (297 posts) at 02:09 AM
Work out when you know you will work out. I have tried to become a morning person, I really have, and I have succeeded in usually doing cardio in the morning. But I LOVE weightlifting in the evening. I started weight training in 1998 when I was a freshmen at BYU, and I always ended up in th eweight room at the same time - at night - due to classes, work, and my lack of an effective alarm clock (j/k). If you enjoy working out at a certain time the benefits will outweigh the negatives (like if you don't do it because you are not a morning person...)

Cerdes,
This 20 minutes HIIT really REALLY works!! I started BFL back in 2002 and was in horrible cardio shape. I slowly built up and got great results....doing BFL exactly as BFL should be done. I lost nearly 50 lbs and lost 12% body fat.
Yesterday, I did my HIIT, and in 19minutes, I got 2 miles in, so you aren't just sitting around doing it. Like all the others said, if you have the energy to do more cardio, you aren't hitting your high points. Good Luck and YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I have added 20 minutes of moderate to slightly intense cardio to my strength training days. Instead of upping the tension on my bike each minute, I do sprints instead and wow, the exhilieration sure gets me pumped up for strngth training. (And no, I haven't found that I lack energy for strength training. In fact, I have found the opposite to be true. I get the adrenaline going and feel stronger while lifting.)
I have also added yoga to my routine. I plan on doing my cardio in the monring and yoga in the evening. And possibly adding it to my strength training days as well if my muscles can hadle it. (It is a really great way to stretch those muscles back out after strength training, but just starting back up with yoga, I may have to take it easy at first.)
Good luck!

By the way... You will get great results whether you add extra cardio or not. In teh beginning stages I would NOT add extra cardio. But extra cardio or any extra activity is a great way to get over a plateau.

Oh darn...I was really hoping to find out what kind of drink I am...lol. And the ankle is hurting like he11 today. I may skip the cardio today and just to weights. Try to give the ankle a rest. I admit, I didn't follow doctor's orders. I only took about 1 full day off of the ankle. I couldn't take any more because we were trying to move (got the injury the day before we got our moving truck...yay). So, all except for the 1 day, I have not really been able to give it a chance to really heal. But, I'm also stubborn and will work through most pains. No whimps in my line of work.
Thanks Jeremy. I'll do a search.

One other thing. On the weight schedule. How long between rotations should I rest? I'm not planning on breaking between exercises, but after I finish the first set of each exercise should I do 30 sec. rest or 60 sec.?

No. I suffer the same with my UBWO. When I train I can feel my muscles SCREAMING when I hit my 10s, but the next day.....Nothing. At first I'd really feel it for a few days after, but now I'm not suffering as much.
However, try not to become too dependant on the same exercises for each muscle group. I'm starting week 4 tomorrow, and over the last week I included all kinds of new exercises.
On Wednesday for example I did a LBWO which consisted of a dumbbell only routine. The next day I was a little bit sore, but nothing I couldn't handle. Then on Sunday I did my second round of LBWO for the week, and did machine only exercises, something I have never tried before. The simplest thing like that made a HUGE amount of difference, and I am still suffering today.
Tomorrow I have an UBWO and I'm going to use dumbbells. Then on Sunday I'm going to use the machines for as many exercises I can, and try the barbell for the others, (something I've never tried before). Eventually, (remember challenge one is a learning curve), I'll be able to see what exercises are producing the best results for me, and then be able to mix and match to my heart's desire. This is the way I'll be doing it for a few more weeks yet, because I've noticed a significant change in my quads and hams this week.
We all have exercises that we LOVE to do, but in order to get the best results we have to take ourselves out of our comfort zone. That doesn't always mean pushing yourself harder, but instead could mean trying things we are not always tempted by.
Good luck, I know you're giving it 100%!

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (18 posts) at 10:33 PM
Wrecky, don't feel like you're the only worrier in the room :)
I'm just the opposite as far as soreness goes. I am much weaker in my upper body and am rarely sore. I too However after my leg workout yesterday I am EXTREMELY sore. It probably has to do with the fact that I never used the intense weights that I'm using now. Plus I did squats and walking lunges which I haven't done in forever.
I think chuckdiesel is right, "soreness doesn't mean progress." I'm not a fitness expert, but I don't think it would be healthy if we were constantly sore.
Isn't it funny that we WANT to be sore and feel the pain AFTER our workout?
Like they say, No pain...No gain
:)

My husband and I have just finished our second week in BFL. He hurt his back and went to Dr. He said NO excercise for 2 weeks. No lifting more than a pencil for 14 days. Also found problems with spine. No more running ever.
What should he do????? Continue to eat 6 meals a day and keep up the EFL????
I am trying to keep going even though my partner in all of this is injured. I really started this to support him, but don't really want to give up. I feel crappy on my free days of eating "Junk". I really needed his motivation and now he's out.
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (24 posts) at 11:08 PM
I'm so sorry about your husband's injury.
I've had loads of back problems in the past and know what it's like when this strikes right at the beginning of a challenge. Unfortunately I got frustrated because I couldn't exercise, gave up many times, and then regretted it later. I really hope he can keep going.
I couldn't run for years, but found that I can get a great cardio workout on the stationery bike (or on a real bike outside as long as I can find some hills). So maybe after his two weeks he could give that a go.
As for weights, after his two weeks I imagine he'll be restricted as to what he can lift. I don't know what his starting point is, but for me lunges and calf raises are two exercises I can still manage while recovering from back pain with body weight only being sufficient with higher reps.
And I hope he can stick to the eating in the meantime. If it were me, I'd drop back to 5 meals while not exercising, and cut back on the portion sizes just a little.
I really hope his back is much better soon and you can both keep going. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way :-)
P.S. I know you didn't ask for advice on this, but just to throw in my two cents worth... I could have avoided 15 years of chronic back pain by taking the doctor's advice with a grain of salt and consulting a good cranial osteopath right at the start of my probs. No offence to your doctor, but mine was of the x-rays, anti-inflammatory pills, and rest school of thought. When what I really needed was a good spinal assessment, treatment, and maintaining activity levels. Thanks to great holistic treatment I now wear a heel raise in one shoe (this was a miracle cure for me!), have had long term muscle probs sorted out, and can run again!
Best of luck with your challenge.

I got through the Thanksgiving 4 day blowout that is my family celebration with only gaining 1lb. I count this as a victory, as my normal mode is to gain 10 lbs between Thanksgiving and New Years. Not this year. I managed to go on a 3 mile walk and work out on Saturday. I couldnt stay on program with my normal routine, but I made an effort and was even nice when my MIL said " You are getting up at 7:00am to walk on Thanksgiving???" She hasnt ever been very supportive. But my husband even got up and went with me. All in all after the 4 day food free for all that is my families celebration, I think I did fine. Back to clean eating and hitting those 10's.

I have used splenda in the past, and thought it tasted fine. I agree with others here. It just doesn't make sense to me when trying to be "healthy" to add chemicals to your diet. You can get unrefined sugar, and honey. Used in moderation you will be fine. I use sugar in my coffee, or maybe a sprinkle of it on my cottage cheese.

Day 2 of my promise. . . sort of a weird day. I had a terrible headache for most of the day, afraid it was going to turn into a full-blown migraine and my DH is out of town, so no one to really take Megan while I healed, but it turned around and got better.
Water - 9 (2 Diet Pepsi, normally I'd do caffiene free but I wanted it this time to help my head and 2 Crystal Light . . . I'll get in the 10th before bed)
LBWO - Not exactly BFL (knee problems so I'm doing what my physical therapist tells me for now)
Lunges 1 lap around track w/o weight
Squats 30/15
Step - 15 R 15 L
Extensions - 1x35x15 R 1x38x15 L
Calf Raises - 135 155 175 195 215
Calf Raises (toes in) - 155
Shoulder Press 20 30 40 50 40
Lateral Raises 30
Meal #1 Luna Bar
Meal #2 Dannon Frusion (not what I planned but I hurt too much to cook)
* Bite of Chick-fil-a at mall*
Meal #3 KFC Grilled Chicken Twister
Meal #4 1 1/2 C. Brown Rice, Turkey Sausage, Grn Pepper, Onion, Chicken Noodle Soup Mix (Casserole type thing)
Meal #5 Sugar-Free Jello Cup w/ FF Cool Whip
Not stellar on food, but could have been much worse . . . had to sneak in a Meal #5 or I would have been way under in meals, never have been able to do 6.
I can do it again tomorrow . . . even better!!! I invite you to join me in a great day!

Daisy, I live in the south ( Birmingham )..so I know what you are talking about as far as our unhealthy eating here in particular. Like you, I was ridiculed at first for eating healthy, with people calling my tuna that I ate most days "cat food". Don't let them get you down...they just want you to be as miserable as they are with themselves. I started running ar lunchtime on the Lakeshore drive trail, and lo and behold, within a few months, the main culprit in the "cat food" comments was wanting to join me. Now he is my lunchtime running partner. Don't give in..you are in the position to be a real role model..it's up to you to choose to be strong, or give in to the wishes of the miserable masses..and I think you know which person you want to be!
Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (280 posts) at 03:58 PM I'm always amazed every time I read that some people have co-workers that comment on the food that they eat. This just doesn't happen where I live and work. Well, if someone does have something to say it is 'wow, that looks good!'. Its unbelieveably rude to say something bad about someone's food. I wonder if it is because I live in a very multi-cultural part of the world. Vancouver BC is a hub of immigration. Chinese, Vietnamese, Philipine, East Indian, Russian, Muslim, you name it. Heinz 57 caucasians like myself are becoming a minority. So here's some responses for you "Imagine what I'd look like if I didn't watch what I eat!" "What kind of thing is THAT to say?" (because they are being rude and more people should call these people on it.) "Healthy is goooood."
Body for Life Forum Message by Not tryin' to scare folks! (142 posts) at 04:29 PM
The people I work with always comment on how healthfully I eat, the only negative things I get are "don't you get tired of eating the same thing?", but they never try to push any foods onto me. I live in the South also, and there is ALOT of temptation. But, really, why worry about what anyone else says or thinks?
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (297 posts) at 05:40 PM
Where I find the most pressure is from my sister...she is either making comments or giving me dirty looks. I've learned that in order to live this lifestyle you have to develop a thick skin.
Learn to enjoy that liberating feeling of knowing you are improving your health, losing weight, whatever your goals are...despite what those around you are saying or doing. It makes you feel pretty good when you see the long term benefits. Focus on those...
Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (18 posts) at 09:20 PM
so today at work this girl was comparing me to this other girl who snacks on junk all the time. "And then there's Natalie over here always eating apples, oranges and her spinach salad." I just told her I like eating healthy. I didn't really see it as negative, in fact it made me proud of the healthy choices I'm making...I'm taking care of my body and fueling it with the foods God intended for us to eat.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetThing (13 posts) at 09:41 PM
I live in northern Saskatchewan, and beleive me, KFC and MacDonald's are the most popular restaurants in town. Most people here have no concept of eating healthy. So I get a lot of comments too, even from family and certain "friends". I just handle it like DreamCatcher does-- each time something is said, I make small comment about enjoying the way I eat-- eventually, they do get the message and stop pestering. It may take a while, but it works. And you still have your self-respect in the end. Usually, they also have more respect for you in end, too. Be strong, you can do this!
Body for Life Forum Message by Evielee (65 posts) at 09:42 PM
Good for you! I've given up caring about what others think about my eating. But one funny thing happend to me today that made me awear that I'd actually trained my colleges in to accepting the way I eat.
Having just heated up my egg white omlette I was walking back to my desk and my boss walked passed, glanced at my plate and carried on.
About 3 mins later he came into my office with a confused looked and said "Did I see right? Looked like you have some kind a pastry thing on your plate... I was thinking that doesn't look like something Evie would eat...!" funny really.
I showed him what I really had and he said "ahh that's more like it, knew you wouldn't have anything that wasn't healthy!" Guess it just goes to show that not only have I trained myself but my collegues aswell!
I never get told "One bite won't hurt" any more - it's just understood that I eat healthy.

HEY FOLKS! I hate to break it to you southerners in the land of "everything fried" but you don't have a lock on unhealthy eating. Detroit, right down the road from where I live, is the fattest town in America, except when Houston beats them. Michigan is famous for cars, so no one walks. Exercise is considered to be walking from the tour bus into the Indian Casino! So, look, crappy food and stupid people are everywhere--it's just a part of life. The key is to eat good food and ignore the stupid people. And the other key is to stop being so sensitive and self absorbed and get on with life! I found years ago that most people care a whole lot less about what and how much we're eating than we think. When I was a state senator we had to go to sometimes as many as 5 functions in one evening, and at least two of them were sit down dinners. I watched my fellow legislators gain about 20 pounds each in the 90 day session, and I didn't gain an ounce, because what I would do is to cut up the food on my plate, move it around, drink some water, eat a few bites, and at the earliest opportunity I'd toss my napkin on the plate, and as soon as a waiter came by I'd give them the plate. I did this for years, and believe me, no one noticed. They wer all too busy stuffing themselves!!

I'm taking your "move the food around the plate" idea with me next week for our annual Christmas party. I'll probably use that as my free day, so of course i'll eat what's there but I don't need to gorge myself like the rest of them will probably be doing.

Hi Rachel, I am using the BFL for women and from the smart food table and listing, Low fat yogurt falls under the Protein category, hence the confusion. Please inform what original book says. I am going to get the original book and clear up on the differences. Thanks for feedback. Regards
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (120 posts) at 05:44 AM
Im pretty sure the original book says its a carb and usually includes like 1/2c of cottage cheese mixed in for the protein. Its funny how the simplest things can get so confusing!
Just to make sure Im not making a mistake I went to the book and this is an excerpt directly from Bill Phillips BFL:
"Yogurt qualifies as a carbohydrate choice on our Program, which means, of course, it should be combined with a portion of protein to make a meal."
Hope this helps:) Thanks for the extra push for me to go look up the right answer!

Yeah - I think our bodies stop giving results when that "muscle memory" kicks in. I'd change it up as much as possible. I think weights make a big difference too. Are you doing those by the book, or is it tough with the injury? And how many calories do you eat every day?
I got a bit frustrated my first challenge, made some very slight changes, and the results have been amazing so far. All the best to you!

sooooo true about the scale. although i still weigh in every week, i use the number to determine by bf% on mybodycomp.com, and then can determine with that whether or not i've lost fat, which is so much more important than just "weight". and yea . . . gaining muscle is cool too. here's wishing you an awesome challenge!

I use a product called lipodrene, which has ephedrine, hoodia, and 5HTP in it. I love it cuz it curbs my appetite and gives me more energy. Yes, ephedrine is back on the market in the U.S., and would never have been banned a couple years ago had people used it responsibly. I love it, and would recommend it to anyone who isn't on prescription meds or has had heart or seizure problems. People just need to read warning labels.

Natalie,
I pretty much only listen to trainers when they speak to me about form or ask me if I need a spot. You are the only one that will be happy with where you are in both your looks and your health. There are thousands of books, doctors, nutriontionists and even trainers that all have their own opinion of how you should look and what you should be doing with your health. I agree with Lori that you don't want to go to far with but, but overall I think you'll know what the fine line is. And hey who says you can't be a professional snowboarder? ;)
Good luck,
Jeremy
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1424 posts) at 08:48 AM
I don't think the number on the scale is anything to think much about. With your height a goal of weighing 110 is a little low. Of course, if you have a very low bf%, it is probably a number that would be reasonable. I would focus more on body fat percentage. I don't think 15-18% is an unhealthy percentage for a woman at all. As long as you stay on the healthy nutrition and workout program, you can't go wrong. Good luck!!!
Nancy
Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (221 posts) at 09:04 AM
This is only my opinion, but 110 isn't bad. However, if you lower your BF%, the scale might say you weigh more because you will have more muscle.
15% is a great number to shoot for. Personally, as a woman, I would not want to go below 12%, or at least not very long because then you might be in danger of messing with your thyroid gland. I was reading where that had happened to one BFL champ by the name of Pam. Does anyone know who I am talking about? She got really lean and then when she reintroduced more foods, she gained very rapidly.
Of course, I think that it does not happen to everybody, but to be on the safe side, I will play it safe. I don't really want to take any chances. It will be a while before I get to that point anyhow. I guess I will have to reevaluate when that time comes.
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (214 posts) at 09:09 AM
yeah I agree. Maybe it wasnt so much BFL the trainer was disagreeing with, but the fact you wanted to get under 15%..maybe? perhaps?
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (254 posts) at 09:18 AM
I agree that you should look at a bf% goal rather than a weight goal. I am your height and I am not sure whether I could ever weigh 110. I am 144 now and my goal is 125.... when I get there I think my bf% will be well below 20%. but that's just me. ANYWAY, you look great NOW! But there's always room for improvement, and don't let anyone talk you out of your goals! As you lose fat and build muscle you can always change them if YOU think its necessary. Good Luck! :) Kelli

I have the "I'm an oldie (more than one challenge) but I have been slacking so do I have the right to post?" disease right now...every once in awhile, I think we fall of the wagon (or get drug behind it for miles) and think that suddenly we have nothing to offer, we have failed all of BFL kind...nothing can be further from the truth, it is in our failures that we can plan our successes...if you fall in a hole while walking, and then you come upon the same hole today, do you fall in again?...damn, not a good analogy, cause I have fallen in the same hole for like 2 weeks now, but anyway, you get my drift...I may have "lived it up" for the past few weeks (I don't know why living it up makes me feel so down) but I am still a success, still a champion (I just bought my EAS windbreaker) and I have a ton to offer...sing it with me people, I am the champion, I am the champion, gone is the loser, and I am the champion...of the WORLDDDDDDDDD!!!
Do you feel me?? Are you ready to rock the house?? ARE YOU ALL IN???????????????????????????????????? Now let me hear you screaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love DOMS!!!
After 2 months of the same workout I lost the DOMS.
I no longer felt that I was working hard enough - no pain so it must not be working!! LOL!
I changed my workout so I am now back into the muscle soreness.
I can barely lift my arms today.

I've been doing laterals for a few weeks with minor DOMS, but then I switched to upright rows and BAM! Can't really explain it, but the rows seems to get my shoulders better.
Anyway. I'm glad I'm not the only one who smiles at the pain when I reach for a book on the top shelf.

Instead of just posting the link to my blog, Im going to reprint my lastest entry here. I think its very inspiring, hopefully you will too!
MOVE OVER BUSKER:
I have given up on trying to kind a relitive Macca song for my posts! LOL "Move Over Busker" was one of my favorite tunes off the "Press To Play" album.
One of the things I have to correct immedialty is the time I get to the gym. Again today I had to shave some stuff off the workout in order to get to work on time. I can't be doing that all the time.
Today's workout:
BB CHEST PRESS
DB INCLINE PRESS
DB FLYS (all done with one warmup set, then a sets of 8, 6, 4, 2..the last set being near my max)
then 20 min at 75% max HR on the eliptical (should of been 30)
Good news?
I STARTED THIS CHALLENGE AT 312 POUNDS..I'M NOW AT 302!!! THREE POUNDS TO GO TO BREAK THE 300 POUND MARK!!!!!
I'm very happy about this!
Also, I had a very rewarding and positive dream last night. I remember it very vividly.
I think some friends and I were at a movie and we were getting food for the film. I got up to the counter and starting making comments about all of their super-sized portions. The girl behind the counter, who was probably in her late teens, told me she LOVED all of their food, especially the super-size bacon double cheesburger with sauce!
In this dream, by the way, I was how I picture my future self to look like. Trim, healthy, and tanned. I started to explain how unhealthy that stuff is. Of course, she and her friends laughed it off as though they were untouchable. But I was ready to really illustrate my point.
I saw a heavy set women at a table in the eating area enjoying her meal (I know it may not of been nice to do this) made an example of her. I pointed out to the girl that yes, you can probably get away with eating whatever you wanted-for now, but as you get older your metabolisim is going to slow down and health problems will cacth up with you. You may not see the danger now, but you will feel it later.
A look of realization came over her face as she sat down to collect her thoughts. Tears welled up in her eyes and she promised she would change her ways. In a moment that probably came straight out of a "Dr. Phil" episode, we embraced and I wished her good luck.
How's that for a positive feeling?

Great job tiger! One thing though. Try doing your weight training after your cardio. The reason being, you are depleting your glycogen stores pumping everything out of your muscles during your weight training and then doing your HIIT where your body starts to take energy from your muscles to fuel your workouts. Change it around and then have a protein shake after your weight training to help with the muscle resynthesis and see what happens. Keep up the good work. You'll be under 300 before you know it!

I went into the Dr yesterday because since the beginning of November my legs and arms have had this horrible burning sensation in them day and night. They just hurt. I can't keep still and have to keep moving in order to handle the pain. During my workouts they burn so much I break into tears.
My DR thinks I have many red flags for MS and I have a brain scan scheduled for today.
I personally am wondering if it isn't something as simple as my back being messed up or maybe I am missing something nutrient wise.
The reason I post here is because my Dr didn't seem to know what was going on. She has me scheduled for a ton of tests but that is about it. She didn't even take a look at me (phsyically) for more than 3 minutes.
I am trying to work through this but sure is hard right now. Between the miscarriage earlier in the month and now this...NOVEMBER SUCKS!

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (168 posts) at 09:39 AM
I was wondering the same thing as GlennH. It could possibly be peripheral neuropathy. Definitely keep your appointments for all the scans and lab tests, and don't hesitate to ask for a neurological consultation and/or rheumatological consultation. Pain like this can be very difficult to diagnose. I hope you get some answers soon.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rushja (506 posts) at 09:47 AM
Thanks everyone.
Diabetic, no, not that I know of. It does run in the family though.
The pain is much worse in the legs than the arms. I just wish they would give me something to help with it. I am popping advil like no ones business but it is doing nothing for me.
I don't understand why this is happening. I am finally exercising, eating well, shedding weight, etc. I am healthier than I have been in YEARS. Why this now?
Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (57 posts) at 09:59 AM
One other thing, although it is a longshot, is excessive use of painkillers can cause a similar sensation. If it would be that, popping advil will only worsen the syptoms. The burning sensation you describe usually points to something nerve related.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetThing (13 posts) at 10:13 AM
My sister has MS, and there are many different symptoms, but I don't think "burning" pain is generally one of them. Numbness in the legs and arms is frequent, as well as abnormal fatigue, dizziness, trouble with balance and walking, as well as vision problems. Also depression and problems with memory and problem solving are symptoms. My sister has experienced most of these at some point in time, but has never reported burning sensations. Hope this helps you out! I also sincerely hope that you don't have MS.
Body for Life Forum Message by Rushja (506 posts) at 10:36 AM
The pain is so strange. The best description I can give is...
When you have a sunburn and you rub up against something or a piece of clothing pulls on it. Youch!
It is in my thighs, calves, biceps, etc. It is in the major muscles.
I do have vision problems, blurry off and on and also dry eyes. I normally have bad vision so I didn't think anything of it.
I am also getting electric shock type pains in the top of the back of my head. Also the same area I had a major cut and stitches 10 years ago from a car accident.
I really just need to stop the advil, especially since it really is not doing any good.
Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I woke up for the ritual 3 a.m. bathroom run and saw a shadow on my arms! Thought I was seeing things and then this morning, sure enough, there is a tricep trying to peek out! Woo Hoo!!!! Haven't seen that for years!
Yeah! It's working!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetThing (13 posts) at 10:17 AM
That's a great feeling, isn't it? The little changes like that keep me going. Keep up the great work!

Even better is the memory it brought back this morning. Long ago I had a really buff trainer at the gym. After lots of training sessions, he poked my triceps and said "look, how cute!" Ah, memories. Why do we remember silly things like that?

You mean you open your eyes for the 3am bathroom run??? I am still getting use to it and often bump into the bed or the wall...damn lucky I don't have more bruises than I do!!! :)

Yeah my 3 am bathroom run consists of tripping over cats, and stumbling into a dark bathroom (no lights please).
Congrats on your rockin triceps! ;)

Urs, I got 2 cats also and yes, the poor little guys have suffered as a result of my sleepy pee run.
Oh well...all in the name of fitness, huh?!
SMP...never said congrats on the bulging triceps!!! YOU GO!

So much for two perfect days in a row. I was doing well this morning. But then...she struck. The first week I started this job, one of my co-workers sent her son around with the popcorn order sheet, in full Cub Scout uniform. Who can resist that? Or the chocolate carmel popcorn? At the time, BFL wasn't even on my mind. So I ordered a canister...and promptly forgot about it.
Then it was delivered. Ahhh the torture. I put the can under my desk - still sealed mind you. And it sat there and radiated mind altering beams. Within fifteen minutes I saw myself opening the can and reaching in. Literally...it was like an out of body experience. Until I ate that first bite. That was so yummy. I was so hungry and so low energy and I swear that was the best thing I've ever eaten in my life.
Good news - I limited myself to one handful. And my craving was completely fulfilled. The canister is sitting here and I have no desire for anymore. I'm perfectly happy with my carrots and sandwich. And even better, I'm awake enough now to look forward to cardio!

Um, throw it away.
This happened to me, but with Harry and Davids Moose Munch...which sounds pretty much the same.
Yeah, bought it for the kids so I could shop. They didn't like it.
Guess who ate it and then just about keeled over and died when it was almost all gone!???!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, do yourself a favor...throw it away.

yes, Moose Munch. Very appropriate name.
I felt like a Moose after eating it.
Plus, it had something like 10 grams of fat per serving, which I am sure means less than a 1/2 cup per serving.
Popcorn, caramel, chocolate, some kind of nuts....just damn good.
DON'T TRY IT. ;)

Hey, there you old and new cardio freaks!!!
We used to do some posting on how our cardio HIIT or SHIIT sessions were progressing. We had some pretty competitive people pushing further than they ever dreamed and it was AWESOME and totally inspiring!
SO, let's hear it freaks!!!
Ok, I am not close to what I used to do, but today I went 2.08 miles in 20 minutes. Considering that 7 minutes of the 20 was actually walking (I go down to 4.5 for my level 6 - I found I need more recovery or I get side stitches), I think I am pretty damn proud of the number!!! Next time I will shoot for a little higher.
Tell us how your HIIT/SHIIT was today!!

My Tue-Thur morning cardio is pretty simple and boring. I use my ellipical machine at home for 20-25 mins and sweat like a pig! I really push it out on Saturday mornings at the gym on the treadmill, stepmill and whatever else I can get in.
Ursula...way to go with the 3 miles! That would KILL me right now. I'm getting 2 miles in 25 and that hurts...bad!
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (546 posts) at 01:22 PM
walking at 4.5? that is running for me! ;)
Body for Life Forum Message by KatieFeld-mom (58 posts) at 01:27 PM
My elliptical last night was 1.94 miles in 20 minutes. I have steadily been increasing the mileage and I can't believe how difficult it is.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (546 posts) at 01:32 PM
I ran at 5.0 (12 min mile) for 2 miles straight yesterday.
No, it wasn't a hiit, but I was avoided UBWO for various reasons (don't ask) and I had to do something.
First time I have run a full 2 miles in a long time...same pace.
My HIITs are usually about 1.9 miles in 20 mins, but since the speed is up and down and all over....I don't count that as steady running....although I guess it is...
But yesterdays run was a different feeling. YEAH....
Teresa
ps....my HIIT's look like this...
Level 6- 4.9
Level 7- 5.1
Level 8- 5.3
Level 9- 5.6
Level 10- 6.8, once 7.0 (yikes)
Should I have more of a range inbetween my levels?
Body for Life Forum Message by twinmom (279 posts) at 01:38 PM
I have to drag my butt out of bed to do my HIIT which I am not fond of but once I get going, there is no stopping me.
Body for Life Forum Message by IndyGirl (27 posts) at 02:19 PM
I just did mine. 1.37 miles in 20 mins. :-( But when I got done I felt like I could've pushed a little harder. So I got on the bike for another mile. Today mine was
5 - 3.0
6 - 3.5
7 - 4.0
8 - 4.5 (this is a jog for me)
9 - 5.0
10 -5.5
Except the last time through when my 6 was 3.3. Everything else stayed the same. I think I may bump the levels up .2 next time and see if that kills me.

my numbers have just increased (I'm thrilled with this) to the most they have ever been in my life.. 5 - 4, 6 - 5, 7 - 6, 8 - 7, 9 - 8, 10 - 10mph.. that is right 10!!!!! I SWORE TO MYSELF LAST YEAR THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME!! BUT NOW IT IS TOTALLY DOABLE!!!! im going to move the rest of my intervals up by one more MPH tomorrow morning....
don't know what my 10 min mile is... ill have to try and see what that is tomorrow too!

I totally hit my 10 today. I did the eliptical and went 1.75 miles, burned 350 calories. I was struggling with my last level 9 and really didn't know how I was going to make it through 10. Awesome workout today!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (398 posts) at 03:38 PM
Ran for my HIIT
5/5.0 6/5.5 7/6.0 8/6.5 9/7.0 10/8.0
Then I rode the bike w/random hills on level 12 for 30 minutes
Then the recumbent (however you say that) eliptical for 10 minutes on a 45 incline
then I threw up
Then I walked to cool down for5 minutes

OMG> I LOVE CARDIO.
Sorry. I have to admit it.
I actually hate the weights. yeah, I said it. I hate lifting weights.
Love cardio. Want more cardio in my routine. Ditched UBWO yesterday just for my cardio. Cardio junkie.
In fact, I think I might change to 6 days of cardio, maybe 7.
But for real. I do love my cardio days. Even though it kicks my tail, I stay red for hours, and I sweat like a hog.

I didn't win the big check (that college loan/credit card would have been fun to erase), but I did win. I shared my story with my gym and they gave me two free years if they could use me on their website. I wrote the story back in May when I falsely thought the Tracker was a portion of the BFL contest. This will save me over a grand the next two years!!! BFL Baby! Check this out: http://www.fitworks.com/main/gateway/gateway.asp?GID=237&CID=0&URL=http%3A%2F%2Flocator%2Fcustompages%2Fpage%2Easp%3FlocID%3D104869%26cpid%3D1

They were waiting to see if I made the Top 15 to plan a big BFL party at the Gym. Obviously that didn't happen but I am constantly giving BFL advice at the club to members! I guess I'm getting a localized version of "15 minutes of fame!"
Body for Life Forum Message by zooman (344 posts) at 03:10 PM
Heck in my opinion they should throw you that party anyway. As far as I'm concerned you did win, in more ways than anyone can imagine. Way to go and hey, maybe your college will see that and erase that loan. Wishful thinking!

Kevin,
I think you won some time ago.
Your transformation was spectacular, but I was particularly impressed with the way you acted after the 15 finalists were announced.
You reacted with courtesy and graciousness towards them. That in and of itself told me you were a real champion, and as far as I'm concerned, that's when you won. You're actions and attitude were those of a champion.
You took the high road and you did the Buckeye State proud!

Ah, the season of giving (giving of crap to make us fat) has begun. One of my students brought in cookies to school today and tried to give me some. This time of year, students are always bringing me gifts and 80% of the time it is candy, cookies, or other sweets. We are doing Secret Santa next week and 80% of the time, that is sweets as well. I am therefore declaring a no sweets zone in my classroom during the holiday season. I have made a big poster to put on my door and I am instructing my students to keep all holiday sweets outside. If it isn't healthy, they're not allowed to eat it in my class. I am also telling my Secret Santa to please keep things away. These days I have great will power and I don't think I'd really be all that tempted but I think it sets a good example for others to see that I won't give in to the holiday binge. So plan ahead- and let your co-workers know that you're just not interested, thanks anyway!!! You'll be thankful when your co-workers are writing New Year's resolutions to take off holiday pounds and you're looking better than ever! Best of luck! Jennifer
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (546 posts) at 03:55 PM
I did the same with my secret santa....said just no sugar, please.
But I have trouble on the giving end....when I think of things to give...oh boy....it is all about candy, cakes, cookies....
Got any great idea's? I still need to reprogram.
Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (101 posts) at 04:23 PM
I guess I'm lucky because I run a personalized party favor store on the internet so I have an arsenal of gifts at my fingertips! I make personalized holiday water bottle labels and put them on water to give out to co-workers. They think they're adorable and they're great to have around to wash down all the sugar they get from other people! :)

Jennifer- good idea. I am a teacher too and often receive sweet gifts from my students this time of year. Most of them by now think I don't or can't eat sugar, since I have taught many of them for years and when they offer me some of their potato chips or gummy worms I tell them I do not eat sugar. If you still get a box of goodies on your desk, try regifting, espially o thos ein need. One year I got 5 boxes of chocolates and gave them to people asking for spare change (kept in my car and handed out). If that is not convenient for you, leave them on the table tin the staff room, they will be gone by the next day! Holiday treat are hard to resist, we don't get to eat most of them throughout the year. Imagine starting the year without having to include on our list of New Years Resolutions: I will get in shape.
Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (161 posts) at 11:01 PM
Jennifer -
I need to do this in my own house. Last year I was very pregnant and told my sister not to make me her annual huge plate of cookies, I didn't need to gain any more weight. This year I need to tell her again.
My DH just got in trouble from me this weekend when I tried to give away all but a couple of pieces of leftover Pumpkin Cake he said no, he then proceeded to eat all 4 pieces . . . in front of me! No good! (He's got the metabolism of a hummingbird, so I don't care that he eats it. Just be considerate.)
I've been invited to a playgroup/cookie exchange and I responded on the evite that yes I would be there and if my willpower is strong I'll bring cookies to share (I love to bake) but I won't be bringing any home . . . so everyone knows upfront.
Doesn't it feel like some twisted video game in which we live that we have to foresee the obstacles in order to advance further?????
