mmmmmmmmmmm thought about it. I've got one just got tired of measuring everything.

Body for Life Forum Message by AirSpace (62 posts) at 12:58 PM:
ohhh, yeah... bet you're not surprised to hear me say that given my obsessions with tracking everything ;) I weigh and measure everything to get my portions right - I find that I end up WAY off if I try to eyeball it. You'd think i would get better over time, but I'm still consistenly wrong unless I use the scale, LOL! Erin

I don't have a scale..but I have those disposable dishes (just while I'm living at school so I can throw them out when I'm done school) and the bowls and stuff have cups marked off.. I can measure some stuff this way. a scale would be easier though.. esp for using fitday..

the one I just bought was around 10.50..I think the most expensive one I saw there...and this one was big and digital, was 30 bucks.

Body for Life Forum Message by Darrell (207 posts) at 06:35 AM: MYOperPLEXing question
I've only used one Myoplex, and it's the one that has 53g protein.  It has splenda in it.  I always have an after taste for hours.  Is the original myoplex the same way? Or does it use real sugar?  Does anyone know?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (655 posts) at 08:25 AM:
They all use splenda aka sucralose. I think you will find splenda in almost all bodybuilding products because no one wants to use real sugar although some use aspartame or stevia.

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (247 posts) at 08:27 AM:
Myoplex, when I used it, was nothing I ever craved! LOL Its a quick convienent way to get a nutritious meal into you. If you think its bad now...imagine how it was nearly ten years ago! LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by Pan (19 posts) at 08:56 AM:
Darrell, Myoplex Original tastes excellent and so does myo light. http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/eas/eas.htm Check out this link to browse their contents. I am doing this challenge for fat loss and muscle gain. I was under the impression that i should be taking in myoplex lites, thats until i spoke to tim at eas (ever so helpful) and he told me to switch to originals. You seem to be using the myoplex delux which i think unless your a hardgainer you should stick to originals. Have a nice day Pan

Body for Life Forum Message by She Bear (24 posts) at 09:07 AM:
I always add something to my shake like part of a banana or peanut butter. That really helps with the aftertaste. I get my Myoplex off E-Bay. I find it is cheapest there.

Body for Life Forum Message by Darrell (207 posts) at 09:10 AM:
Pan, I realized that only after I have used several of the 36 packets in the box. I will use up the box, before I buy more. I'm only using these after my workout days, and not on cardio days. But I do want to try the originals.

SheBear, that sounds like a great idea! EBAY!!! never thought of that!

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (50 posts) at 03:55 PM:
I agree with she bear. However you must use the myolite or you will be getting too many calories and will have a hard time lowering BF%. I use the lite and usually mix in a banana, PB or skim milk. I found that with the Delux and original I was getting way too many daily calories.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 04:10 PM:
ocpanther...if you add a banana or PB to the Myoplex Lite, you've just raised the calories right back up there. You've doubled the carbs if you add the banana. That is why us women have to be so careful about add-ins on our shakes. Myoplex Original is recommended by EAS for most men wanting to lose fat. The original shake packet has 42 gm of protein. The Myoplex Lite shake packet only has 24 gm of protein...big difference for you guys! I have used Ebay and vitaglo.com for my shakes for over a year and never had a problem with either one of them.

Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (70 posts) at 05:31 PM:
Why not have Myoplex original and only have half?? isn't that about the same as having the light? only the box will last you twice as long. any thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 06:54 PM:
If you are talking about Myoplex original shake packets, I don't see why not, forest tech. The calories would be a little low, around 135, but you could always add a little PB or berries.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (135 posts) at 07:20 PM:
STRETCHING MYOPLEX: You can buy a packet and "stretch it" by dividing it in half and mix with skim milk and half a scoop of vanilla protein powder, thus extending it to two packets with quite similar nutritional contents. OR, you can divide it in half and just put a scoop of protein powder in and mix with water, which then gives you a high protein drink. Or, you can even dump the whole idea of Myoplex and just make and mix your own shakes using protein powder, skim milk, lecithin from soy, some kind of fruit or other flavoring, a bit of whatever supplements you want (I add MSM powder, Creatine Monohydrate and L Glutamine) and experiment with contents and portions. (I mix with three different proteins, chocolate flavored soy, vanilla flavored whey, and egg white, sometimes adding a bit of cottage cheese as a casein protein too. This kind of "home cooking" is actually a lot of fun, and the shakes cost about half of what the Myoplex does.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (50 posts) at 08:14 PM:
Wendy, I agree, my advice was intended to make the myopias taste better for Darrel. I think Myoplex tastes better with PB & Banana but to add that to Original or Deluxe would be too many calories so I add it to Lite . Just my opinion though.

AHA, light bulb on. Sorry about that ocpanther65. I misunderstood the point of your post.

Thread: Genisoy Soy Protein Shake! (14g Protein) (33 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Romeo (7 posts) at 08:13 PM: Genisoy Soy Protein Shake! (14g Protein)
I drink 500 ml of low-fat milk for one of my meals which gives me around 16g of protein and it takes around 250 calories of my daily diet. But I just came across some interesting product, Genisoy Soy Protein Shake. It takes only 130 calories and provides you 14g of protein. Besides, it has many minerals, about 70% of selenium, 25% of zinc, 100% of Vitamin E and Folate and lot others. I think I will replace low-fat milk with this product and it takes less calories and very high in nutrition value. What do you guys think? Does anyone use it as well?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (655 posts) at 09:28 PM:
Two issues: 1) Why are your meals so small? Your a young guy around my size and age and I eat anywhere from 300-500 calories per meal. You could be doing more harm than good if you are not eating enough. 1600 calories for you is way too low. Ive been there myself when I first started this program. You lose weight fast and then all the sudden it starts to taper off because your body begins to go into "starvation mode". I suggest doing a google search on this term. Very low calories is not the answer. Ironically, eating more is. I find that I lose weight at a safe pace around 2000 calories a day. 2) If you are a vegan, soy protein is an okay choice. If youre not, stay away from it. There is a lot of debate on soy protein and how it can increase estrogen levels in your body. This would be a bad thing and its not worth the risk in my opinion. Whey is a much better choice.

Body for Life Forum Message by Romeo (7 posts) at 10:30 PM:
Diesel, thanks for the feedback and some great advice on soy protein, I really appreciate it! Yeah, I think I should stick to whey. As far as the calories thing is concerned, I am way too high in my fat percentage, about 23% 4 week back and around 37 inches at waist. I read somewhere on the net that the maintenance calories required for a male is 1,600 calories. And I also read somewhere in the BFL book or I guess, BFL website that if we are trying to lose weight, then our meals should be between 200-300 calories (6 meals a day)

Ok, I finally bought some protien shake mix. On the directions, it says add one scoop to 4 ounces of water, skim milk, or your favorite juice. Is 4 ounces really the only amount of liquid your are supposed to have? 4 ounces doesnt seem like a lot, or that it would actually fill me up.

I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was little because I love dogs. But when I was 12 I was allowed to help out at a Vet's office - until I passed out watching a cat being neutered. Then I studied broadcast journalism at BYU in hopes of becoming the next Linda Cohn on SportsCenter. Then I went into regular news. The absence of morals and ethics in TV news astounded me. So then I thought about being a lawyer. Seriously. I wanted to change the world, and Law seemed like an appropriate outlet. But now....I want to help people with their health... I'm applying to get into the program to get my Master's degree in Dieteics (nutrition) and become a registered dietitian. I apply in February and find out in March. I'd also like to be a certified personal trainer as well, to get the exercise part down too. I'm only 26, but hopefully my career path won't change too much after I've finally made a decision!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 04:48 AM:
I always wanted to be a forensic pathologist like Quincy. Then I took organic chemistry. I changed my mind after that. After finding out how many years of schooling were required, I decided to get a business degree. lol After college, I worked in product management/marketing for a company that made NICU products. The company was bought out, and I lost my job, which at the time completely crushed my little idealistic world. It was then that I decided I had had enough of the corporate BS and commuting, so I set out to find a job I could do from home and start having children. I then went back to school and got a certificate in medical transcription and was fortunate at the time to get a great job with MedQuist. I have never needed daycare, have flexible hours and can work in my workout clothes, but I'm near my kitchen all the time, which can be good and bad! My ultimate dream was to be a performer. I wanted to play piano like Billy Joel and Elton John! lol I have played piano since age 8, but unfortunately I can't sing at the same time or sing very well for that matter, so I don't see that happening any time soon, well at least in public. Then there's always the Olympic ice skating champion to dream about:)

Mike, I knew I liked you for some reason! LOL When I was in high school, shortly after meeting my high school sweet heart and current husband, I was considering going into the Air Force to be a firefighter (because of my love for firefighting and EMS work). Didn't realize you also have a background in law. Impressive. Amodellawyer - Thank you for the good luck wishes. I only have 9 classes left for my undergrad in pre-law and am still considering where I want to go for law school. I hope to graduate with honors because I have maintained a 3.5 or higher each semester. We are most likely going to be living in central Florida by the time I get ready to go to law school, but I'm sure I should have no problem getting into any school. I just dread the LSATS (I have test anxiety and hate tests). Everyone has some great dreams and great jobs already. It's fun to see what others do or want to do. Take care everyone! Crystal

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 10:12 AM:
SimpleButterfly, never give up. I was told once to always take at least 1 class per semester, even if I really wanted to drop them all. I followed that advice, and 16 1/2 yrs later, got my undergrad, and then 3 yrs later got my MBA! I wanted to be an architect but dropped that immediately, "fell" into accounting for 16 yrs, and now I work with databases all day long, plus rehab houses on the side.

Thread: on the verge of an affair (1448 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 11:37 AM:
Honesty. Sharing. Understanding. These are some parts of a marriage that are required for the marriage to work. I believe leaving a husband or wife means you are exchanging "known problem set A" for "unknown problem set B". Who is to say problem set B is better than problem set A? Talk to your husbnad and tell him honestly what you are thinking of doing. be upfront. His response may surpise you. He may awaken, and begin to make small changes. Heck, by being open with him you may find he starts to open up to you. There may be fighting intitially but it will subside, and then the communication will begin. Just do not have the affair. Look, fantasize, but don't touch. The advice here that said to not stray is good. The advice that says to leave is wrong. This is part of the problem with our "throw-away" society. If it doesn't work anymore, get rid of it now, without much effort. Stick with this marriage, and in the end the results will be worth it. It is almost like the BFL program: stick with it and the results are worth it, even though along the way there are setbacks and disappointments.

You're so right Liz. I also notice there's barely ever an ad in the muscle mags for EAS... what's up with that?

Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (3 posts) at 12:16 PM:
I think the show is REALLY motivating but I do have a problem with the scale factor. Just because you're losing weight on the scale doesn't necessarily mean it's fat. It could be muscle and therefore not really healthy. If you really wanted to lose the most weight you could starve yourself, become anorexic and you would certainly come in the lowest weight. Know what I mean?

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 12:18 PM:
Ya know, I watch that show and I find it motivating, but I have a beef with it: all their emphasis is on weight loss so there is absolutely no incentive for the contestants to build muscle because it weighs more than fat! Whenever a contestant gets on that scale and sees a small loss or even a gain, they look so disappointed and I want to just scream at the TV, "Don't feel bad! You worked out hard! I saw you lifting weights, you just gained MUSCLE!" It is a useful reality show, as you say Liz, but I think if the Biggest Loser's goal is to inspire America to get in shape, they should address the fact that it isn't all about what you WEIGH, it's about your body composition.

I think just concentrating on weight loss makes it easier for the audience. Ever try to tell someone who doesnt understand all of our jargon that we've lost fat but gained lean weight? they kind of look at you liek a dog who has heard a strange sound. Tell them that you've lost X many pounds and then they understand :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 12:39 PM:
That may be true, tigermuscle, but it wouldn't be that hard to explain, would it? Get a little education in there instead of assuming the public is too dumb to understand, regardless of how true that may be. At each weigh-in they could just show how much muscle was gained and how much body fat lost and base the results on some formula derived from those values...?

Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (347 posts) at 01:13 PM:
I lost interest after they did the wall climbing stunt. I was kind of irritated at how Caroline got them all pumped up for the challenge and didn't tell the contestants the whole rules before they went up the wall the first time. It wasn't a fair challenge really. Other than that, I think the contestants all did a great job and now to go back and look at their progress photos on the site, they are incredible. I do feel that they need to look at the fact that men do lose weight faster than women and that as you lose weight, you also gain muscle and since women tend to burn fat slower they lose "weight" slower because of the gain in muscle. I watched these girls emotions as they continued through each weigh in and they were probably thinking, "Why are these guys losing so much weight and we aren't?" I hope next season is better than this season.

Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (70 posts) at 01:39 PM:
Do any of you find it odd that they are losing such ENORMOUS amounts of weight? I bet they don't drink at all leading up to those weigh-ins and it is all water and a little fat and some more muscle. It's all about numbers to them.. not really true body composition changes per week. I think I remember some contestants losing upwards of 15-20# is ONE week.. Come on now.. that is counterproductive to show average uninformed viewers. They will start thinking that is realistic and that they can lose real fat that easy! Then they will try and give up before they are a week in if 5 lbs aren't lost in like two days! I watched the show.. and yes the sort of right idea is there.. and yes the results did come.. but I think they need to emphasize changing from the core out.. ignore the scale! And don't emphasize cutting out every SINGLE good tasting thing inyour life like it has turned to poison that will kill you! I know that it was all about fast wieghtloss for the competition and thus cut out junk indefinately, but the viewers should realize that it doesn't have to be THAT strict in real life. A fitness plan has to be a lifestyle that can be LIVED with.. not a total sacrafice regime that can't be stuck to long term. I think with a few minor adjustments they could model the show into something more realistic that average people could learn from.

whoa.. that turned into a rant... where'd THAT come from?????????? :S

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (247 posts) at 01:44 PM:
yes its a little unusual, and their calories were very restricted..but also keep this in mind: their job for 12 weeks was to lose weight. They could eat, sleep, breathe fitness without bing responsible for anything else. Heck, if we had trainers accessible to us 24/7, a stocked kitchen, all the time to work out and do nothing else, and millions of people counting on us I think we could lose that much too.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (568 posts) at 01:49 PM:
Love the show. might apply to be the next biggest Loser! Yes, they focus on weight/scale loss, but if you watched the end and saw the top three....They are ALL lean and muscular. yes, they lost lots of weight. But they all had muscle tone. It is a reality show....we aren't meant to know everything about what they teach. next year when I am on the show and I win....you all can cheer for me!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 01:51 PM:
It's not even healthy to lose weight that quickly!...granted it doesn't make for good TV when the contestants lose a healthy 2-3 pounds per week, but like Forest Tech said, what kind of message is that sending to the uninformed public?

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (247 posts) at 02:01 PM:

Now that i think about it.. perhaps they did.. she was a drill sergent last year wasn't she?? If I ever had her abs i would freak!!!! Did you ever see her old pics?? she used to be quite large believe it or not.

Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (186 posts) at 05:34 PM:
If you watch the final "last-chance" workouts that they have before the big weigh-in they're usually wearing sweatshirts and heavy clothing that you don't see them wearing for the other workouts. So they're obviously trying to loose as much water weight too - but they really are losing the weight too, because it's week after week. I love the show! Laurie

THANK YOU!! Mom and I watched an entire season then missed the finale because it was on a Sunday (the one with Ami from the Body of work video, where the women dominated but the guy won...) I woulda been sooo mad if i missed this one! Go Danni!

Body for Life Forum Message by Darrell (207 posts) at 05:52 AM:
Ashtrash, so you too are one that remembers Ami Cussack? I thought I was the only one. I had seen her years ago on the video, before it made it's way to the basement. I saw her on Survivor, thought gosh she looks familiar. Then I watched the video again about 3 months ago.. and it was AH HA!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 09:13 AM:
Thanks girls. Age is just a number, don't worry about it Mel. You're only as old as you feel. Ah yes, the birthday suit pic....hmmmmmm that's something a 25 year old would do lol

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 09:16 AM:
Good thing you've grown up now and have matured right- learned your lessons in life???? You beat me to it, I was just about to say you are only as old as you feel and I have honestly been stuck at 27 for 8 years now....I will never grow up!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 09:19 AM:

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 10:55 AM:
I like amodellawyer's idea of pics being sent to me on my birthday....come on April....but, I only want the pics of the more beautiful, sensuous, intelligent memebers of this site sending me their pics!! Come on, ladies, put me on your calendar and send me those pics in April!!!! :):) PS, actually, you do not have to wait for my birthday to send them. I am willling and able to accept all b-day pics early!

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 10:58 AM:
Andrew you are married....and amodellawyers "girlfriend" approved of the exchange (No my BF did not, I couldn't see asking him..."hey we are all exchanging nudie photos, you ok with that hun?" I don't think it would fly at all) Any-whoooo...I gotta tell ya I don't think the wife would approve. I know I certainly wouldn't be able to look her in the face again!

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 11:08 AM:
hey,.......she doesn't care...she knows I know what would happen to me if I actually ever did anything...We haven't been married for 16 1/2 yrs and decide to have a child together in our mid to late 40's after 14 yrs of marriage if we were not completely aware of what we are both like. Ask her about me when I was in college during our early years of marriage... She keeps me very happy at home but "just because you are on a diet doesn't mean you can't look at the menu!!" And, it is a 2-way street! If she wants to look at nudie photos of guys, I don't care!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 11:22 AM:
Hey, Amkazen, does your wife want to get involved in the exchange too? Send her my way!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 11:22 AM:
Hey mellie, why am I a "girlfriend" ? (i.e. with quotes?) Just curious...

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 11:26 AM:
Just emphasizing the fact that he isn't married like Andrew is...not that you are any less important...hell I give both of you credit for being so open and honest with eachother and asking permission (I almost put permission in quotes, see its a bad habit, Im actually not sure why I do it when I do.....just emphasis I guess)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 11:35 AM:
I see :) Just thought maybe there was some other secret there I wasn't aware of! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 11:37 AM:
He would be a fool not to make you more than his girlfriend one day thats for sure (PS Happy Anniversary yesterday!!!)...unfortunately I am not privy to any cool secrets!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 11:37 AM:
Full disclosure, Hillary. I told you about the picture I sent and received. What else could there be? Except maybe mine and Mellie's secret plans to meet up in....oops, nevermind lol

Dustin you are a big time trouble maker!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 11:42 AM:
Yes, big time troublemaker!!! THANKS MELLIE! I am sending you some serious karma right now.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 11:46 AM:
amodellawyer, I'll ask her tonight, but I think I already know the answer. She is way too modest. But, to have a child at 47 and look the way she does, whoo boy!! I am one lucky guy!! And Hillary, as for the fool comment, I would agree with Mel, but also, Mel? 2 yrs? I guess I was a fast mover with Jan... after 2 months I was in heart, and she & her son were in mine, my motorcycle was in her living room, sheltered away from the cold, northern (almost Canada) winter, and we have been inseperable ever since! You make such a cute family! He is such a lucky guy.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 11:53 AM:
Im not sure what you are asking me? 2 yrs? I got confused....sorry.

You two should just go and get married on the beach in Cancun!!! You're going there soon anyway. If I could plan my wedding all over again, that's what I'd do in a heartbeat....so much less stress and hassel.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 12:22 PM:
By you two, I mean Dustin and Hillary!! Just clarifying.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 12:23 PM:
Dustin, are you paying attention here?

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:24 PM:
4 yrs?? YES!!! And, can Jan, Onica, and I get an invite, even though you have never met us?? We are nice people. Ask Mel. She can vouch for us, and Onica sure is a cutey. She would make a great flower girl. :):):)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 12:25 PM:
Wendy, I am SOOOO in favor of that idea! I hate the thought of spending tons of money and having everyone looking at me all day. I would so much rather just have it be a special moment between the two of us in a simple dress on a beautiful beach...but I think our families would kill us.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 12:26 PM:
I will totally vouch for Andrew, Jan and Onica...Onica (2 year old) is absolutely the cutest thing I have ever seen (besides my kids!)

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:27 PM:
Ok, on a beach, just the two of you. Can we still be invited? We'll just sit in a cabana back away, watching from a distance, drinking our drinks. Oh, in this case, I would leave Onica at home with friends or family.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:28 PM:
Thanks, Mel!

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 12:30 PM:
Check out my girls as flower girls on my profile!!! LOL They're pros! They've done it three times now. I'm thinking of hiring them out, but for you guys, it would be at no charge of course! Brent is excellent with photography, and I'll do the video. See, it's all set. So when do we leave?

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 12:31 PM:
Hey sure, anyone who wants to party with us is welcome to come, but I'm not paying for you, that's all I'm saying! :) Okay, amkazen, you need to post a pic of your darling daughter along with your progress pics... Dustin, I'm sorry, I'm taking attention away from your big day with marriage talk (he gets harassed about this at work, family gatherings, everywhere). Happy birthday darling!!! Still having a good day??

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 12:31 PM:
You girlies are pretty darn adorable too! I have to admit it!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 12:32 PM:
Wendy, I saw your daughters yesterday. SO CUTE! Little angels. Almost makes me want to have children...but mine would never be as cute or well-behaved I'm sure!

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:33 PM:
They sure do look confident, like they know exactly what is expected of them. Cute! Question for you; is there a Dallas, GA? Yahoo Maps does not bring it up.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 12:39 PM:
WHAT?? LOL Dallas is a northwest suburb of Atlanta, near Marietta. Cute, OK, thanks!, I'm a little partial:) Well-behaved? Well that depends. Don't let the little angel look fool ya.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:50 PM:
Yahoo does not always get things correct, and I am sure not the sharpest knife in the drawer! Hillary, I put 2 pics of Onica in my profile. When Jan and I take our photos, we always stand in front of that door. Well, whenever we pull out the camera, Onica has to have her pics taken also, hence her poses! And I bet your kids would be as cute and well-behaved as you are!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 12:51 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 12:54 PM:
Ummm...excuse me...I hate to correct you here....but you ARE CUTE AS HELL!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 01:01 PM:
Well, Hillary, while alwasy cute, is not the most well behaved girl either. But's that's the way I like her! Sorry, Hilly your secret's out now.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 01:01 PM:
the fact you have an 18 yr old still amazes me. You do not look old enough...you look to be in your twenties still...

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 01:02 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (250 posts) at 01:07 PM:
Yes I do....well technically he will be 18 on Jan. 13th....love him to death, he is beyond gorgeous, but an absolute TERROR...ever since he was 12! I can only imagine what it is going to be like to have TWIN TEENAGERS! We better hold on tight Georgia...could be a bumpy ride for us!

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 01:09 PM:
I've been told we're in for it Mellie. I know what I was like at 12. So anyway, how's your birthday coming along Dustin???

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 01:14 PM:
amodellawyer, I asked Jan about the pic. Boy, do I know her...she said she is way too modest in this condition. I asked her what she meant and she then said she had to find a pic taken of her when she was 18 before gravity and 2 kids took over her body... Hmmm. a new project for this weekend. Find this pic!! Sorry you won't be getting a pic anytime soon besides her challenge photos, which I need to take the time to actually post some weekend.

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 01:16 PM:
Oh, we're talking about me again? ...finally! lol Today's been fine. It's really just been like ant other day. After 21 the birthdays don't mean too much anymore. But, Hillary's tking me shopping for some new duds soon so that's exciting. And she sent me flowers yesterday for our anniversary. How sweet is that? My company christmas party is this weekend so I'm postponign the celebration until then. Nothing like having your employer pay for you to get drunk...

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 01:20 PM:
Onica = adorable. I could only imagine how much cuter she is in person! Hee hee, Mellie, that naked comment was totally just making fun of Dustin for being that way. I am totally a good girl. BTW, it is clearly fact that Dustin is cute, but regardless, I'm always afraid if we had kids it would be like that "What If They Mated" segment on Conan O'Brien where they take the WORST features of each would be parent and combine them to create an ogre offspring...

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 01:22 PM:
Dustin sent me a dozen red roses yesterday too, just for the record, and they smell LOVELY right now.

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 01:45 PM:
I never even thought about that Hillary. You mean you don't want kids with huge heads and beak-like noses with billboard like foreheads and caterpillers for eyebrows?

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 01:47 PM:
Yup, that's what I'm afraid of. At least the eyebrows could be tamed, but the rest...I'm not sure plastic surgery has reached those frontiers yet.

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (108 posts) at 01:52 PM:
They could get your eyebrows too (or lack thereof). That might be worse.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (41 posts) at 01:54 PM:
LOL someday I will draw a picture of this hideous creature and post it in our house somewhere so we are always reminded why we're not having kids! (Among other reasons...)

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 01:55 PM:
You two are way funny!!!! LOL Here is a thought: book a cabin for the BFL cruise this coming June, get married while on the cruise with a gazillion of your closest BFL friends, start the child making operation so we can actually see what your offspring will be like, and then have a quiet small ceremony back home for your family......

Thread: What's important in your life? (49 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ptwob2 (202 posts) at 10:42 AM: What's important in your life?
This is written by Chris Shugart, an author and trainer with an online publication called Testosterone Nation. Gave me some new perspective this year. ************************************************** Note: This is the time of year when many people sit back and think about what they're thankful for. I'm not one of those people. But even a bastard like me gets all sentimental about his offspring. Here's a holiday rerun that reflects this. It originally appeared in the newsstand version of Testosterone about four years ago. Lessons from Hospitals It didn't really hit me until the doctors started giving me her odds for survival. She'd most likely live they said, but 30% of those who have the disease do not. I slept in the hospital every night on a cot beside her bed. My daughter Ashlyn, not yet a year old, lay in the bed with tubes and wires coming out of her, bruised from dozens of blood tests, scared every time the door opened. When the fevers were under control, she was happy and playful, thankfully too young to know about percentages and odds. Meanwhile, I learned new words I didn't want to know: lumbar puncture, acquired heart disease, Kawasaki disease, and the list went on and on. It had started with fevers that shot up to 108 degrees in minutes. Sometimes the doctors could tell us what was wrong, other times they couldn't. So they ran tests, what amounted to over a hundred tests that included two spinal taps. I had to hold my daughter down while they inserted the spinal needle between her third and fourth vertebrae to obtain a specimen of cerebrospinal fluid. Her first Christmas Eve was spent in the emergency room. She was admitted to the hospital for the first time on Christmas day. We never slept. I half-heartedly went to the gym every few days, mainly to relieve tension, and lived off a combination of hospital food and protein powder. At night, when Ashlyn slept, I'd write articles on my laptop, hoping they made some sense. I lost my temper with nurses and kicked a preacher out of the room when he tried to use my pain to recruit me into his faith. We were in and out of that hospital for a year. Finally, the doctors said their first diagnosis could be wrong. Forget the percentages. That's when they sent us to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth for special X-rays and more blood tests. And that's where my perspective on the world forever changed. It was a hellish day of tests and tears, but they finally found something. Something so simple that it had been overlooked by a dozen doctors before: fluid in her Mastoid gland. Medications helped and a minor surgery cinched the deal. She was cured. As I write this, Ashlyn's just celebrated her third birthday and has no memory of the events. But I'll never forget them. What struck me the hardest occurred the day we found out about the cause of her illness. We left the hospital exhausted yet elated. We had an answer. We had a solution. Ashlyn was going to get better; she was going to live. In the main lobby of the children's hospital, a lobby elaborated designed to look like a magic castle in an effort to bring some sense of wonder and joy to the kids staying there, were dozens of dogs. It turned out there was an organization there that brings pets to hospitals to cheer up the young patients. The kids were thrilled. Those that could, played with the big Labradors and coddled the tiny Chihuahuas. But some of the kids couldn't leave their beds because of their conditions, so the staff just rolled them into the lobby -- beds, IV's, machines and all. Here was a group of kids caught in a moment of joy, kids who could temporarily forget about doctors, needles, and chemotherapy. But the adult in me could see past their laughter. I knew the cold reality that reminds us that life isn't fair. I knew that a few of these kids would never leave that hospital. My little girl was going to be okay, but these kids were dying. To say that such an experience gives one a sense of perspective is an understatement. But suddenly, in the weeks and months that followed, criticisms bounced off of me and petty worries that used to bug me fell to the wayside. What did I care that someone wrote something nasty about me? Who cares if I put a scratch on the new car? I'm a father who was told that his daughter may die, so how could anything or anyone possibly hurt me after that? My family had been through hell and we came back bulletproof. Today, all that's just a memory. It's been replaced with something else -- anger. I look around at the adults in this country, adults who are blessed with disease-free and functional bodies, who choose to smoke, stuff themselves with unhealthy food, and refuse to exercise. I watch them and I'm filled with rage. I want to grab them up by the shirt collars and scream into their faces, "Where the hell do you get off? Don't you realize how lucky you are to be healthy? And what are you doing, letting it waste away and taking it for granted? With all the crap out there that can blindside you - cancer, MS, heart disease - you think you need to invite disease and death with your unhealthy lifestyle? "Oh, you don't have time to go to the gym? You want to talk about time, you lazy piece of shit? Then visit the children's ward at your local hospital. Go see the kids at St. Jude's. Ask them what they'd like to have time to do. Go see the six year old boy with leukemia. Tell him how you don't have time to stay healthy and how you just don't like to workout because it's hard and you get 'all sweaty'. Stroke the hairless head of a nine year old girl going through chemo and tell her how you choose not to be healthy and just really enjoy the stress relief a good smoke gives you. "What's the matter? You don't like those images? Then wake the hell up and learn to appreciate what you've got." And hopefully they'll realize that training and eating right are privileges. We do it because we can, because unlike those kids, we have a choice. We can choose to build muscle, burn fat, and improve our cardiovascular health. We have the choice whether we look good or not, whether we live a long, functional life or if we waste it all away out of either laziness or ignorance. When you go to the gym today and you're standing there trying to catch your breath after a hard set of squats, remember how lucky you are to be there. Remember all those who would love to have that privilege. And when you start beating yourself up because you're not quite big enough or not quite lean enough, remember those kids whose only wish is to do nothing more than go outside and play. In short, learn to relish your gift; think of working out as a celebration. Most importantly, think about those kids, and from those thoughts, teach yourself perspective. Training, watching your diet, and taking supplements can give you health. Perspective gives you wisdom.

I just loved this and had to share it with my tracker friends. Please share with others. Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single father who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with his children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, dis-interested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

You know, I really think I am at my best and enjoy life the most when I am at peace inside. When I'm not, I take everything personally--everything! On those days when I'm prayed up and rested, I encounter the same people and same situations that set me off the day before, and I am able to both say and believe that "this really ISN'T about me. It's about something else that has happened to this person, and but for the grace of God there go I!" When I can do that, I am able to treat them with respect and dignity no matter how they treat me. It really is true that happiness is an inside job.

I'm experiencing my first "true" winter and it's wrecking havoc on my skin. Although it got cold back home, it was rarely for long and we never used the heaters all that often. Now I'm so DRY my skin is flaking...literally. I've been using Oil of Olay lotions, both facial and body but then I feel like my body goes from dry to greasy and back to dry. I love their face lotions although they don't seem to be helping a whole lot. I think my water is alot harder here too. I'm drinking water but maybe not enough. It varies from day to day. Like today, I've had less than 20 oz because I've been so swamped, I've only looked up to answer questions. Any other suggestions. I hate flaking and I itch terribly. I had raw spots on my legs this morning where I'd scratched last night...through sweat pants! IndyGirl

One thing that helps us here in Va when winter hits, because it gets do dry with the gas heat are humidifiers. You can get a portable one from Lowes or home depot and keep that thing running!I have two, one for upstairs and one for down. Keep drinking the water and keep up the moisturizer. This time of the year I use Gold bond lotion or coco butter. I'm like you I scratch like crazy the minute I start to dry out! Good luck! Jansen

I grew up in Illinois and had/have the same problem still. I drink a gallon of water a day and use Eucerin and Aquaphor lotion daily after showering. Showing with a very mild soap like Dove might help as well. My mom swears by Neutrogena lotion, but it seems really greasy to me. A little at a time works great for your hands, though.

Body for Life Forum Message by ShineyHiney (309 posts) at 12:07 PM:
Wendy I Eucerin too and it has helped alot. I'll have to try Aquaphor, can you get it at Walmart?

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (138 posts) at 12:10 PM:
One thing to watch out for in your lotions is things like glycerin and alcohol. The glycerin will cause you to be greasy and then when it contains alcohol it just dries you out again, which causes you to just reapply. I have used a brand by Arbonne, its a little pricey but it works, you might just go to a drugstore and look at the ingredient label until you find one w/o that stuff in it and do just as well. The humidifier is a very good suggestion.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 12:16 PM:
I agree with the humidifier suggestion as well. I found a very small bottle of Aquaphor at Walmart, but it was actually in the baby section. We just got a new Eckerd, so I'm going to go check there to see if they have it as well.

I like the neutrogena healthy skin lotion (with AHA) - it moisturizes but also exfoliates away those dry flakes.

Aveeno makes a skin-soothing lotion that really helps stop the dry itchies. I use it at night when I can't sleep from itching. I'm struggling with the facial moisturizers. I've been using Oil of Olay, too, but it actually kinda stings. I got some udder cream for my feet and hands, which I slather on then put socks on (both my feet and hands) at night. I drink a ton of water and also will leave conditioner in my hair (I have naturally dry hair). Whatever it takes!

My biggest saviour - cytephill - don't even know if thats the correct spelling. Can't even check because I have a generic brand right now. But its something like that; pronounced set-a-fill. Its for sensitive skin. I have oily but dry skin; I've used this for years and can't believe I lived without it. Its the only thing that hasn't dried, make my skin oily, itch irritated etc. - its perfect; I've recommended it to friends, they've agreed. Moisturizer; I've used pure African Shea Butter. If its pure its thicker than butter, greasy as hell and heavy but works. JMO

I use lots of diff. things for my body but for my face I use MK TimeWise, then the day solution (which is AWEsome for moisturizing) and then the oil free hydrating gel. I have to be careful not to cause acne when working with dry skin on my face. I also have a Mary Kay TimeWise body lotion that is absolutely amazing but really expensive. I actually know a woman who reduced her spider veins dramatically by using it for 6 weeks. I use it sparingly so it lasts longer. I sell MK so I get it for a much lower price. My hands crack in winter and I use Satin hands and then I buy this stuff in the first aid aisle at Walmart that is for cracked, dry hands. The Extra Emollient Night Cream in the Satin Hands package is awesome for my itchy shoulders, etc - I just put it anywhere and let it sink in and problem solved. Okay I'm NOT as high maintenance as all that just sounded...lol. IndyGirl - do you take Fatty Acids - like salmon oil? That should really help. If you lived near me I'd slather your face with a moisture rich mask. Also, I know someone who used Oil of Olay and actually ended up w/drier skin than before for some reason when she ran out of it - like her skin was addicted to it or something so watch the ingredients in your products!

I've been using Oil Of Olay In Shower Body Moisturizer. After you cleans rub it all over your skin and rinse off. It seems to be an emulsified baby oil and feels so nice after I towel off. You don't need to use too much so it is not a waste to think it is going down the drain. It comes in Extra Dry formula too. http://www.olay.com/cgi-bin/newusquicksearch.cgi?sku=us06222004_2

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:18 PM: Best Thing(s) About Your Significant Other
I believe that all too often negative traits in our relationships receive the most attention and focus. What is it about your significant other that attracted you and keeps you interested and in love? For me, it was Jan's laughter, appearance, hair, smile, easy going personality, maturity, and her son. She was the "complete package." She and I bend to each other as needed, and stand firm when needed. I love the fact she is always up for a challenge, and ready to try something new. She is the love of my life for all these reasons, and I know given enough time I could write more!! What about you?

Brent was the total opposite of anybody I had ever dated. He's from Florida, wore a ball cap, drove a Jeep Wrangler with the top down and the doors off and listened to country music (which I still really don't like that much. lol). I always went for the tall GQ-type corporate guys. Man, I was missing out. Brent was so much more fun and crazy than any of my other boyfriends. We were married eight years ago on Dec. 13 and now have two beautiful daughters who absolutely adore their daddy like I do. Brent became a cop and talked me into getting a motorcycle, something I would have NEVER considered in the past. Now I'm at a point in my life where I'm thinking why the heck not? I need to start really living and forget about being so cautious all the time. He's really taught me a lot about living each day to the fullest. He also introduced me to BFL, which is why I'm here today. Love you Brent!

We have so much in common it's scary. Jonathan and I are both fire fighters, very active in what we do, he's a paramedic and I'm an EMT, we have our own search and rescue team and train our own dogs. He's very supportive of my enthusiasm to lose weight and do all this fitness stuff. He's even supportive of my career plans and said he would go anywhere I wanted to go to finish college. I have a lot to teach and offer him and he has a lot to teach and offer me. We love to get in the kitchen and cook together. We aren't together all the time because of his work schedule, but I think that's what makes us even closer because we value the time we spend together. April 25 will be our 8 year anniversary and we still love each other as much as we did when we were dating. I tell everyone we're still on our honeymoon, which, aside from our two beautiful children, it feels like we are. One other reason I love him....he keeps me smiling constantly (probably mostly because of the big red truck he bought me for our anniversary 2 years ago..lol).

What an excellent thread - should have thought of this one myself LOL! Steve is much younger than I (almost 12 years). Sexually speaking he is superior so that is a given and something that I take for granted but we'll move on from there. He is extremely good looking and quite intelligent, something that I've never had with men matching in my past. He is my best friend and soul mate but at times has been my worst enemy - we've had some doozeies for fights. As a provider he has been nothing less than a knight in shining armour. His only goal is to provide for his family and when he feels as though he is failing it is so evident that it actually affects us in a negative way. What Steve doesn't seem to realize is how well he has done for himself & his family (but on the other hand I do think he realizes this, takes great pride in it and wants to do more). He is not yet 30 but has managed to move himself into a top management position in a prosperous, large and recognizeable company where he will only go further in the years to come should he decide to stay there. I must give him a bit of a plug here - many men have been there 20 or 30 years and they've been overlooked for Steve's position. I hate to admit it but okay Steve, you rule, everyone else sucks (inside joke, see blog). He is tolerable of me to no end, but sometimes has absolutely no tolerance for me whatsover (and trust me I feel the same as he). He makes fun of me constantly, sometimes its funny, sometimes you can tell he's had enough of me. While he's a great guy, he's a dick-head too and quite frankly we've given up on "who's better than who". He obsesses about his zits; I obsess about my hives. Really, for cryin out loud, who's better than who? See a picture of Steve (I think I put in my "side" shots - its really a bad pic of him but I did it for a reason LOL). Tracey

He accepts and embraces and celebrates my new found addiction to the BFL program and all it stands for in my life. I can never remember a time when my husband didn't kiss me good bye when I went off to work or when ever we were going to be apart for more than a day. Even when we have been angry about some stupid little issue--we have always kissed goodbye. Sure---there have been times I have wanted to wring his neck and walk out of the house and never come back...but the good stuff has always outweighed the bad...and like a magnet his love has pulled me back into his arms. And...truth be told---I wouldn't give up a moment of the life we have made together. My wish for you is that your relationship is as golden. Yep, I had to drive all the way to the Hospital to find out that Bill is just a pain in the Butt!!!

Bill slipped down the steps this morning ( steps were icy) he was hurting but was ok, we were going to go do more Christmas shopping, so I was getting dressed and Bill said, do you think I should get this xrayed? I said yea, if it hurts that much and he said look, WOW< His butt was black and Blue and sowllen xxxxxL on on side, poor darlin looked like he had on a padded booty that was on crooked, It was funny, but sad too. then he said he didn't feel good, he was nauseaed and week, so I said ok, lets go, he couldn't sit so he laided down in the back seat and I drove. The DR said, he was in shock, he started to shake and his blood preasure dropped to 70/54.
they gave him an IV and his BP started rising and they let him come home, he is doing ok now, BP is slowly coming back up.
don't know how he could go into shock 2 and 1/2 hrs after the fall happened, it was weird, but it wasn't funny this morning, but now we are laughing that we had to go all the way to the Hospital just to find out that he was a pain in the butt!  hahahaha!!

Oh , don't worry, I'm not saying anything behind his back, he even said, I bet you can't wait to get on Tracker and tell everybody that your husband is a pain in the Butt!  I said Yep, now you relax while I go to the computer and GET*HER*DONE!!

I think I have found the stupidest commercial ever made.  Have you all seen the new Total commercial where the lady is showing this husband and wife the new flavors of Total cereal (the Total makeovers) and the wife is jumping up and down, crying, like she's excited she won something?  OMG! What were the people smoking when they made this commercial?  It has to be one of the stupidest commercials yet.

What stupid commercials have you seen lately?

Crystal

P.S. Can't wait to see the commercials for the Super Bowl this year.

I heard a dumb one tonight on the radio for Yokohama Rice Bowl. These two kids were telling knock-knock jokes "Alaska who? Alaska my mom to go to Yokohama" and talking about what a great deal it was that for $2.99 you could get all this rice and WOW- lots of vegetables, too! AND... if that isn't enough... it comes with either CHICKEN or BEEF!! Woo-Hoo! I'm sure that's what 8 year olds spend their time talking about- a very realistic commercial obviously.

It's amazing how much oil chefs use isn't it? Whenever I watch cooking shows I'm blown away by how much oil they use. I wish someone would open a BFL restaurant!

Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (347 posts) at 09:04 PM:
That's why I prefer to use extra virgin olive oil and they even make a cooking oil now that my father in law uses (can't remember the name of it) that's virtually a fat free oil. It's a mixture of different vegetable oils. Will get more info for you next time I go to the store, but it's not cheap. I know chef's use a lot of oil in their cooking. I used to be a waitress at the Greenbrier Hotel and got to see first hand how the food was prepared. Yummy food, however, very fattening unless you chose the blander lite side dishes.

At first glance, I'd say that if you are getting 10 of the 12 reps, the weight is probably okay. You may try decreasing the weight if you can't get 10 reps. Going to failure is what's important and it seems like you're doing that.

The Smith machine was invented by Jimmy Smith, a former Mr. Universe--but who cares about that! It is the most versatile exercise machine there is. Using the stops or hooks, depending on what type it has, you can set it up to do a bench press, french presses, overhead presses, upright rows, bent over rows, squats, lunges, standing and sitting calf raises, and a few others. About the only exercise it does not work well for is the deadlift and its not ideal for biceps curls. You've gotta learn to use it because you can do every one of these exercises with safety, without the need of a spotter.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 12:59 PM: Posture
I noticed a few weeks ago I seem to be "humped" over somewhat in the shoulders. I know this is from poor posture my entire life (44 yrs). Does anyone know of exercises that can be done to correct this, besides being very diligent and aware of how I sit at my desk and walk? I do not want to be like a lot of the older guys I see in the gym that have these rolled over, stooped shoulders.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 01:02 PM:
I notice that with my husband too, but he says he is standing up straight. He does a lot of shoulder shrugs with the barbell on the Smith machine and has really developed the muscles leading up to the neck. Could this be what you are talking about?

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 01:25 PM:
Maybe. When I stand sideways in front of the mirror, and just stand there naturally, my shoulders are rolled forward, meaning there is a lot of skin between the shoulder and the back. Does this make sense? If I consciously force my shoulders back and hold my my head up, all that skin is now "hidden", I am slightly taller, and I do not have that stooped over look you see with a lot of older people, both men and women. I hope I have explained it some more.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (226 posts) at 01:31 PM:
Do you have a desk job staring at a computer like me? Sounds more like a posture problem now that you've explained it. I'm tall, 5'10", and I have to consciously stand and sit up straight. Otherwise, it looks like I'm slouching. Maybe it's from being a very tall young girl and being embarrassed about it back then. I just know it takes a conscious effort to keep those shoulders back.

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (72 posts) at 01:50 PM:
I sit in front of a computer all day too and I slouch!! I found that by strenghening your abs and back you will straighten out a bit!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (52 posts) at 02:17 PM:
Yes, I sit in front of the PC all day, and I too have to consciously stand and sit up staright. I laos have found the abs and back exercises seem to help with that also. But, is there a specific exercise or am I doing it now, with the conscious choice to sit and stand straight, and hold my head up?

Body for Life Forum Message by Darrell (207 posts) at 02:22 PM:
To help get rid of your rolled shoulders, stand in a doorway with your hands at shoulder height and press yourself through in a manner in which it stretches your chest. Keep the elbows up. When your pecs atrophy from sitting over a keyboard, etc... it pulls those shoulders forward. Then your back tries to compensate, and you usually will have a back ache between your shoulder blades (the scapula).

I am a big fan of chiropractic if you feel confident in the doctor. I have had major back problems since I was 16. Scolosis and herniated discs in my neck. These problems cause one leg to be slightly shorter and also throws off the alignment of my shoulders and hips. Back pain/neck pain often affect the entire body. I lived for so long with major pain..migraines and constant back pain...I went to great lengths to ease the pain..seeing the chiropractor nearly daily. what finally was a 'miracle' cure for me was losing weight and strength training for my back. Now I rarely go to the chiropractor...last time I saw him was months ago and he laughed and said it was like I was cured :) yes my back is still curved and other things are still out of alignment...but I have basically no back pain..and that is a huge quality of life improvement. My chiropractor was/is like family to me and he was impressed with the amount of pain improvement I saw with the lifestyle change. Good luck with your appts. Please keep in mind that sometimes you'll hurt worse coming out of those sessions than when you went in. When things are out of wack for so long..takes time and patient for the body/mind to get used to them being where they are supposed to be. Stephanie

Actually, this thread does bring back memories of all the names I was called as a child. No, I have never been "fat" but dorky? Yes? Stupid? Yes? Want me to list others? The things that are said to kids....telling a 4 yr old she is fat? Not having her Dad defend her? I get upset at even thinking how hurt my little girl (2 yr old) will be the first time someone says something mean to her. Just keep in your mind we can change the future. We can choose to dwell on the hurtful parts of our past or we can move on. It is hard, and I sometimes regress to those negative thoughts, but I try very hard to continually make the best of every day. And for me, a large part of my mental health the past 3 years has been an increasing relationship with God.

She was pulling my bangs back and showing him how I looked. I remember he said -NO WAY her face is too fat, she needs to hide it with her hair. Well, now I'm 30, I don't have bangs and my hair is short so BLAHHHHHHHHH to you dad! hahaha No worries, though, I've been called fat a lot more than just then.

Mine is the same as Rock Chick's. My grandmother told me all the time. Since I can remember family meals infront of all family and friends she would always say somethng about my weight. And as I got older about my skin aswell. She always just said this infront of people, never when we were alone. She actaully never talked to me. And used to give all the kids sweets infront of me and just ignored me. I also remember that their was a lot of pictures of all the grandchildren but only one of me in her house. And she used to tell visitors to look at all her beuatiful grand kids and show them the pictures and I wasn't their. None of my family said anything so I thought they all agreed. I thougt I might aswell enjoy my food as I will never be pretty, skinny or fat. When I look at photo's of me as a child I wasn't fat at all, I was just as cute as all the other grand children. Only after school I asked my father why they never said anything. He told me it was because I look like my gran's youngest daughter who died young that she did it and they never thought I would feel hurt. I still get mad at them when I think about it. I can understand her pain but not my parents excuse, I am their daughter for crying out loud.

I was always a little bigger than most of my friends but I wasn't fat and don't remember anyone calling me that. I just remember being sad that I couldn't wear all my friends clothes in junior high...they were all size 2's!

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (138 posts) at 03:40 PM: Re: When is the first time someone called you fat?

After reading these stories I just realized how much I might have hurt my sweet little neice.  When I went home, after moving away 6months ago, I see my niece had gained a little weight so I called her my chubby little princess and she got very upset with me (shes only 6) and didnt want to talk. My mom says she gets very mad when they call her chunky and I thought nothing of it, but did mention that I could see she has gained a few pounds too many and maybe they should watch what they are giving her to eat nowadays. Anyhow, I feel terrible now, because I was just saying it to antagonize not thinking it would hurt her little self esteem.  She says kids at school arent nice to her (even though shes NOT fat by any means) and it just breaks my heart she is my angel and now that I think about it I think Im going to cry:(.

I was a stick thin child and only grew into a very overweight teenager. So my first memory of negative remarks was actually in highschool when I heard a boy say "spandex is a priveledge not a right". At the time I was too naive to know he was talking about me, but now that I think back on it I get angry about how incredibly stupid I was about those sort of things, Im sure many other rude remarks were made about my weight but I never noticed.  Maybe God made me be that way in order to save what self esteem I had.

Anyhow, I think its important for us to remember as we lose weight that even though we have found the will power to do it not everyone else has and maybe we should watch what we say and how we say it a little closer, we never know who we might hurt with absent minded words.

in high school i ran 6 miles a day and was a year round gymnast. I also trained for and did a lot of triatholons. Consequently, I was in excellent shape. Fast forward several years to when I was a freshmen in college. That summer I weighed 145 lbs, by the end of the year i weighed 270lbs. Far more than the freshmen 15. I started hearing comments by my second semester, but the first person to tell it to my face was my girlfriend or 3 years when she dumped me because I was no longer sexually attractive to her. Thankfully I am married to a very supportive wife and have very slowly started to take the pounds off.

I was a skinny kid but then I hit puberty at 11 and started to "round out". I was dancing ballet 4 days a week so I was still by no means FAT. Not even close. But my dad still found it in his heart to call me "chuckabena" which is swedish for "fat legs". Nice. That went wel wth all the comments about me being flat-chested (Hey you know why your'e a pirates dream? Yeah, cuz you've got a sunken chest!-Boy, if I had a dime for every time I heard that one!) along with "hey you don't need a bra, just use some band-aids!" I was TWELVE for crying out loud! SO apparently I was a fat-legged, flat chested 12 year old. Jeez, how do we even survive all of this crap, huh??

All my 2 yr old wants is unconditional love. She knows nothing else. And for someone in the future to say something mean to her?? The thougt tears me up. Go hug your kids and make sure they know you love them, and that no matter what anyone says to hurt them, it is not true.

We survive by the grace of God! I was a normal teenager who was called fat by her family so she wouldnt' get fat -figure that crap out - I dare ya! My parents were not involved with me so I didn't know that by the age of 12 you should be showering once a day instead of once a week so in school I was the smelly kid - thanks mom. I actually got called to the school nurse in 5th grade and was taught about something called deodorant. I always had a crappy hair cut and clothes that were ten years old (hand me downs) so I was the smelly kid with bad hair and stupid clothes. Kids used to bark at me because I was a dog. So now I have the words fat and ugly teamed up into the most hurtful phrase I've ever learned. I remember once when I was a size 5 in 10th grade (I was fat remember lol) My grandfather yelled at me for eating a piece of soprasatta (Italian dried sausage) at christmas time because I was a fat pig. I cried so hard and I was mortified when my grandmother forced me to eat the damn sausage even though I was crying my eyes out. That was probably the single most horrifying experience of my childhood. Now you wonder why I like to stay home alone with my hubby - I don't like going out to do things. I'm not anti-social, just a homebody. You know, body like a home. lol
