NMinjun73's Daily Blog

Today is the start of my 11th week on the BFL program. I'm happy with my progress so far, especially with the fact that I've gotten my eating under control. That is a huge accomplishment for me, because unless the eating is dialed in, then the amount of training I do will not matter.

Today I decided to break away from the Bodybuilding style of training prescribed in BFL. Before BFL several years ago, I used to train for strength. The majority of my training consisted of compound movements like squats, deadlifts and overhead presses. I also trained and competed in kettlebell lifting. Needless to say, bodybuilding style training wasn't really my cup of tea. When I decided to take on this challenge 10 weeks ago I was sedentary from a year of being scared into inactivity by a heart attack. Doctors urged me not to train "hard". First off, I don't think the Doctors know what training "hard" looks like, simply because they couldn't tell me exactly what I shouldn't be doing. What they did recommend was low intensity aerobics for hours on end. Boring and Weak! I believe that with proper conditioning and a sensible approach to strength training that I can get back to moving heavy weights again. I knew that my diet needed a huge improvement. I was not only eating a lot of crap, but I was also overeating. I knew that the BFL approach would not only be a decent primer to getting back into lifting, but it would also be a good way to get my eating under control. I've done that. So now that the diet is dialed in, it's time to return back to some real strength training. I'm motivated about this because I was getting tired of curls and goofy calf work on machines. I've switched to the 5x5 routine recommended at Stronglifts.com. I did my first training session today, determining what my training loads will be and moving forward. So thank you Bill Phillips, BFL for helping me with the diet and being the stepping stone to get back to this point, now, as far as training goes, I'm moving back to what I believe is a far superior form of training and that is real bonafide old school strength training. No ez-curl bars, no smith machines, no seated calf raises, no isolated movements whatsoever, just training to move heavy weights with strength and power.
